So, with the launch of our brand-new contact lens service we’re looking at one of the most common eye problems, dry eye, and how you can soothe your peepers back to feeling their absolute best.
What is dry eye?
Dry eye is exactly what is says on the tin! It’s a common condition which occurs when the eyes don’t make enough tears, or they evaporate too quickly, which can lead to irritation and redness. So, what can you do about it?
Exactly how does dry eye occur?
There are a number of factors which can cause your eyes to stop producing tears and becoming dehydrated, including:
A change in hormones (yes, really, as if they didn’t cause us enough problems!) during pregnancy, the menopause or when taking the contraceptive pill, for example.
Wearing contact lenses
Adverse weather such as strong winds or hot, dry air
Prolonged reading, writing or working at a computer
Diagnosed or underlying medical conditions (If this sounds familiar, be sure to see your GP for further advice)
Tips for treating dry eye
If you have dry, tired or sore eyes, luckily, there are a number of different treatments available – many of which are available at Superdrug (‘cos we’re good like that!)
For contact lens wearers
Whether you’re completely used to wearing your lenses or you’ve not long discovered our contact lens service (hi there, welcome!) - there’s a chance your eyes could need a little helping hand. Firstly, ensure you are looking after your lenses. For re-useable fortnightly or monthly wearers, clean your lenses using the solution recommended by your optician and pop them in solution overnight to keep them clean and moisturised, ready to wear the next day. For daily wearers, it’s even easier! The clue is in the name, make sure you are only wearing your dailies for one day to give your eyes their best chance of staying in tip top condition. If you eyes start to feel dry or uncomfortable whilst wearing your lenses follow this little rule of thumb; if in doubt, take them out!
For all you daily disposable contact lens wearers, there is a wide choice of contact lenses out there that can help to enhance the comfort of your eyes. Here are some you could speak to your optician about.
DAILIES AquaComfort PLUS
These daily lenses are designed to provide clear vision and refreshing comfort throughout the day and with every blink. They are great for people that work on a computer or with air conditioning and want to try contact lenses for the first time. They are available for prescriptions ranging from -10.00 to +6.00.
DAILIES TOTAL 1
The Dailies Total 1 is the ideal choice for patients if you are seeking exceptional comfort and superior breathability. These lenses provide up to 16 hours of comfort and are ideal if you put your lenses in first thing and take them out just before bed. Dailies TOTAL 1 are available for prescriptions ranging from -12.00 to +6.00.
For non-contact lens wearers
For sleepy, irritated or sore eyes, try popping in a few eye drops to help alleviate some of the stress we put our peepers under. Be patient when putting them in as it can take a few goes to get the hang of it, but trust us, it'll be totally worth it!
How else can you help prevent dry eye?
Reduce your screen time. Soz guys, that endless scrolling through Insta isn’t doing your eyes any good. Take some time to switch off and give your eyes a rest - this goes for time spent staring at your work screen too without a break.
Protect your eyes from adverse weather with wraparound sunnies - make sure nothing is getting into those eyes of yours!
