Dry eyes are super common! We spend so much time in front of digital screens and in air-conditioned environments, it is no wonder our peepers are crying out for some TLC. So, how can you look after your eyes and soothe dry eye symptoms? Let’s look at what dry eye causes are first.
What is Dry Eye Syndrome & What Are Dry Eye Causes?
Dry eyes syndrome is when your tears either dry up too quickly, or your eyes don’t make enough tears. (So, you could have excessive tears, but they may not be the best quality for your eyes). There could be various reasons why this happens such as: –
If you are aged over 50
Hormonal changes during pregnancy or the menopause
Certain medications can cause dry eyes, cold and flu remedies, but also anti-depressants and high blood pressure medications
If you suffer from Blepharitis, Sjogren Syndrome or Lupus these too can be a cause of dry eye syndrome
Looking at digital screens, such as your phone or the TV, for long periods of time without a break
Air-conditioning, central heating, being in a cold, dusty or smoky environment can wreak havoc with your eyes
If you are a contact lens wearer
If you are a smoker
Dry Eye Treatment
With so many different dry eye causes, it is good to know that dry eye treatment is readily available and simple to use, or simple lifestyle changes and hacks will make your eyes much happier.
Eyedrops for Dry Eyes
Eyedrops for dry eyes from your pharmacist or optician may help with dry eye symptoms. Speak with your pharmacist/optician if you are suffering from dry eyes; they can recommend the best dry eye treatment for you. Eye drops for dry eyes, such as artificial tears or eye ointments that you can use at night, may all help relieve your dry eye symptoms.
Give your Eyes a Break
If you are a contact lens wearer, try giving your eyes a break; using your specs can help your dry eyes.
Also, when sitting at your computer, laptop or any other device, make sure to take regular breaks from your screen. Remember the 20-20-20 rule.
Give Them a Little TLC…
Cleaning your eyelids daily can help be an effective dry eye treatment. Use cotton wool and sterile water or individual eye lid wipes to clean your eyelids.
Wear wrap around sunnies – they will protect your eyes from the wind and dry air.
Other Lifestyle Tips
Try using a humidifier, this could keep the air around you from being dry
Avoid environments that affect your dry eyes
Keep hydrated
Try adding a little more vitamin A in your diet
Stop smoking
And Most Importantly…
If you think your dry eyes are caused by prescribed medication you are taking, DO NOT stop taking these! Speak with your GP before you stop taking this or any medication, even if you think this is causing your dry eyes!
