Dealing with vaginal dryness during menopause

mature lady with short blonde hair wearing glasses clasping her hands

Menopause is a natural stage in every woman’s life and the experience is as individual as you are. However, most women will notice a change in their intimate area and intimate health over time, experiencing symptoms such as vaginal dryness and irregular periods. These changes don’t mean that you can’t continue to enjoy a healthy and vibrant lifestyle or sex life as there are many treatment options available to address these symptoms.

mature lady with short blonde hair wearing glasses clasping her hands

What is Menopause?

Menopause occurs when the female sex hormone estrogen decreases. Before you reach menopause estrogen regulates your ovulation and menstruation. When your levels of estrogen naturally decrease, your menstrual cycles end and you stop ovulating and stop having regular periods. When you reach menopause it’s unlikely you will be able to get pregnant.

During menopause your periods become less frequent and eventually stop. The average age for menopause in the UK is 51 years old, but some women can experience premature menopause, even before 40 years old. If you are under 50 years old, you are diagnosed as going through menopause once you haven’t had a period for two years, but if you are over 50 the diagnosis occurs once you haven’t had a period for only one year.

What are Menopause symptoms?

The main symptom of menopause is a change (usually a decrease) in the pattern of your monthly periods. The changes in your hormones can also cause other symptoms, such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness, loss of libido, mood changes, sleeping problems and urinary tract infections or cystitis. Because every woman will experience menopause differently, symptoms vary from woman to woman.

Treating the symptoms of menopause

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, there are many different treatments and remedies you can try to help find relief. These range from simple changes to your diet and lifestyle, to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as prescribed by your doctor.
Some symptoms can be treated very specifically. For example, if you’re suffering from vaginal dryness, you can use an intimate moisturiser such as Canesintima to soothe and moisturise, even during sex. You might find that making changes to your lifestyle, such as eating a more balanced diet and exercising regularly, can also be helpful in managing your symptoms

As menopause is different for everyone it can sometimes be difficult to manage. If you’re struggling, your doctor will understand and will be able to talk you through different options available to you.

Everything you need to know about Thrush

1. What is Thrush?

The common vaginal yeast infection thrush is a type of vaginitis – an inflammation of your vagina. Both fungus and bacteria naturally live in your vagina, but when the fungus Candida albicans increases, it can cause thrush. This fungus may increase when your immune system is weak or when good bacteria (called lactobacilli) can’t keep the fungus under control.

There are times when you are more prone to thrush:

  • If you are pregnant
  • If you have finished a course of antibiotics
  • If you have diabetes
  • If you are on your period
  • If you take birth control pills
  • If you have an HIV infection

2. Who gets thrush?

Having thrush is normal – around 75% of women will experience it at least once in their lives , while many women may suffer from recurrent thrush.

If you've never had thrush before and you think you may have it, visit your doctor. Once you recognise your own symptoms and you know they’re not serious, we’ll help you to deal with thrush independently at home. Thrush doesn’t take long to clear up once you’ve started treatment.

3. Symptoms of Thrush

Thrush or vaginal candidiasis are the general and medical terms used to describe a common vaginal yeast infection. Thrush occurs when there is an overgrowth of Candida albicans (yeast-like fungus) in your vagina. This occurs when the good bacteria in your vagina can’t keep the fungus (Candida albicans) under control, creating a suitable environment for Candida albicans to increase.
Just so you know, thrush is not a sexually transmitted infection. It can be really uncomfortable, but in the majority of cases it’s simple to treat.
Everyone is different, so your symptoms may differ from a friend’s. They may also change each time you get thrush, so watch out for these common symptoms and whether your symptoms are mild, moderate or more complicated.

Most people experience symptoms such as:

  • An itchy vagina / vulva
  • Soreness around the entrance to your vagina (vulva)
  • Slight swelling of your vaginal lips (labia)
  • Cottage cheese-like white discharge

These symptoms aren’t uncommon:

  • Pain during sex
  • Thick discharge
  • Red and swollen labia
  • Burning around your vulva
  • Pain when you urinate
  • Sores in your vaginal area
  • Cracked skin around your vulva

You should see your doctor if:

  • You are experiencing thrush for the first time
  • You get thrush frequently, or if it returns in less than 2 months
  • There is no improvement in your symptoms within three days, or if they’ve not disappeared within seven days
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have multiple sexual partners
  • You are under 12 years old
  • You have fever, chills, nausea, or vomiting
  • You have a smelly or unusual discharge
  • You feel abdominal pain
  • You have previously had an allergic reaction to other thrush medications

4. Treating Thrush

Treatment can be quite straight forward.
To treat the infection you can use an internal product that contains the active ingredient clotrimazole or fluconazole. Choose from the oral pill, soft gel pessary, pessary or internal cream. These products all treat your infection, but different people prefer different treatment options. External thrush creams will help to soothe your symptoms such as itching.  You can buy our products separately or you can purchase a combi pack containing both the internal and external treatments.

Father’s Day gifting with Love Island’s Chris Hughes

Father's Day with Love Islands Chris Hughes

Between coining the infamously named ‘Muggy Mike’ and his (ever so slightly worrying) love of cows, Chris Hughes quickly became one of our fave contestants on last year’s Love Island. That’s why we were super-excited to find out what he’s planning to get his pa, Paul, for Father’s Day. After some disastrous buys in the past (watch the vid to get the lowdown), Chris has come a long way with his present picking, and he’s ready to impart that wisdom on those of us who are feeling a bit stuck. So forget about socks, pants and slippers – poor dads, aye! – and find out about the pressies that’ll really make him smile…

The daytime fragrance

If you wanna get your dad something he’s really gonna love, you can’t go wrong with a good fragrance, and Diesel Only The Brave is a fave among the fellas. It’s fresh on first spritz, which makes it perfect for the mornings, and dries down to warm, spicy base notes of amber and leather accords – très masculine! Nice pick, Chris!

Men need moisture, too

If you’re on a bit of a tighter budget, Chris has got that covered, too. Skincare might not be top of your pop’s shopping list, but it’s a great thing for you to treat him to – especially if you know your stuff. Keep it simple and go for a good quality anti-ageing moisturiser like L’Oreal Men Expert Vita Lift 5 Anti-Ageing Moisturiser. With Pro-Retinol (a powerful anti-wrinkle ingredient), your dad will be looking fresh-faced in no time…

The night-time fragrance

Musk is a must for the evening scent. Chris has opted for Hugo Boss BOSS Bottled Night EDT (a great choice), which has musk in its base, along with warming notes of sandalwood and Louro Amarelo wood. These deep scents are balanced with softer top and heart notes of lavender, African violet and jasmine – he’ll LOVE it.

That’s why he’s giving his dad the Philips AquaTouch Wet and Dry Electric Shaver. The Aquatec seal on the product means he can shave in the shower if he wants to and shave dry as normal. The NEUTROGENA® VISIBLY CLEAR® Light Therapy Targeted Acne Spot Treatment is perfect for those unwanted spots that appear at the worst moment as it treats spots fast. It is easy to use on-the-go as it creates no mess, flaking or residue. It should be used for 2 minutes, 3x per day until the spot is gone.

Top tips for packing a festival-ready makeup kit

Sure, it's all well and good pre-planning a totally 'grammable glam, but how on earth do you carry it all to the festival? And should you be packing the same products you usually rely on? Before you pack your makeup kit, check out our top tips.

Go bold or go home

Creating a dramatic look is as easy as carrying with you a pack of stick-on face/body gems and some loose glitter eyeshadow pots. They are easy to travel with and can create totally different looks with some selective placement.

Girl with face gems on at a festival

Wear waterproof everything

When the music starts playing, you're likely to dance and jump around (unless you're one of those too-cool listening types). Which means you're also likely to sweat. So avoid panda eyes/smudges by making sure you choose waterproof everything from mascara to eyeliner. As well as working up a SOULA (sweaty upper lip action) - think about the threat of rain!

festival goer dancing in the rain

Invest in multitasking makeup

Two-in-one blush and lip tints will be your best friend. Or how about a concealer stick that doubles up as nude lippie? These savvy products will save you space in your festival bag, so you can pack other important essentials.

Stay safe with SPF

We've said it time and time again, but SPF is essential every day. But, especially so when you're heading to a festival. Whether it's gloriously sunny or not, you're likely to be spending your days outside so always stay protected against harmful rays. Another great space-saving tip is to pack skincare products that already have SPF protection.

Contour and Highlight Steps

Before you start shaping and sculpting, make sure you’re happy with your base coat. If you usually go for a tinted moisturiser – go for it. Like full coverage completed with concealed areas? This is where you should start.

Step 1 – Highlight with lighter cream contour

Woman applying light cream contour to face

Take your light cream contour and apply with precision (using a contour brush helps!) to the forehead, along the nose, Cupid’s bow, chin and under the eyes. This needs to be a shade that’s lighter than your natural skin tone (to highlight) and darker (to define the contours)

Step 2 – Define with darker cream contour

Woman applying dark cream contour to face

Next take a flat contour brush and apply the darker cream contour to the hollows of the cheeks, temples, nose and jawline.  Everyone has their favourite blending tools, so make sure to pick what works for you. If you’re a beginner then we recommend you start with a blending sponge

Step 3 – Blend

Woman blending light and dark cream contour with blending sponge

With your artistic contour lines in place, here comes the fun part – blending! Dampen a sponge by running it under the tap and giving it a squeeze. Then use the larger end of the sponge for the bigger blending areas and the tip for more precision areas (eg. nose and Cupid’s bow).

Top tip: You can also blend using oval brushes if you prefer having more control.

Step 4 – Set with loose powder

Woman applying setting powder to face with brush

To keep your chiselled look in place for as long as possible (and shine-free!), set with translucent or banana powder.

Red Glitter Heart Nails

Red glitter heart nail polish feature

Transform the tips of your talons into a work of art with this glitter-adorned heart design.

Red glitter heart nail polish feature

What Will I Need to Create this Red Glitter Nail Polish Design?

  • Nail file
  • Transparent base coat
  • Red nail polish
  • Silver glitter polish
  • Top coat

Step 1 – Prep your base

Buff and file your nails until each fingertip is shaped to perfection. We recommend opting for an oval, almond or stiletto nail shape for this look as the pointy tips add to the heart design. Next, coat each nail with a transparent base coat to allow the natural pink of the nail to shine through.

Red nail polish ideas - glitter heart 1

Step 2 – Draw the heart

Take a red nail polish and carefully create the top of a heart on the tip of the nail. Start with the outline of the shape first, before filing in the centre of the shape.

Top Tip: If you have a shaky hand, then rope one of your besties in to help you out on this step!

Red nail polish ideas - glitter heart 2

Step 3 – Cover in glitter

Once the red has dried, go over the design with a silver glitter nail polish. Layer this up until you have an even spread of sparkle on each nail.

Step 4 – Top coat to finish

Seal your glamorous look with a transparent top coat – this will prevent chipping and add a glossy finish.

Just Landed: BLEACH London

Stop everything you’re doing right this second! The Bleach London makeup range is available to buy at Superdrug online right now – and it’s every bit as extra as you’d expect.

A post shared by BLEACH (@bleachlondon) on

We already have Bleach London to thank for its amazing array of rainbow-coloured hair dyes, which work an absolute dream – and its makeup is no exception. With everything from build-your-own eyeshadow palettes and brightly coloured matte liquid lipsticks to highly pigmented illuminators and chunky pressed glitter eyeshadows, this range is a must-have – trust us.

A post shared by BLEACH (@bleachlondon) on

Plus, it’s 100 per cent vegan and cruelty free, with fully recyclable packaging, to keep waste materials at a minimum. INTO IT.

A post shared by BLEACH (@bleachlondon) on

Co-founder and makeup artist Lou Teasdale, who’s one of the three women (alongside founder and creative director Alex Brownsell and supermodel Georgia May Jagger), to create the brand told us, ‘It was all about seeing a makeup range that was exactly the same as the Bleach hair range. It’s not the usual glam route that all the makeup brands do. We’re just trying to do it the Bleach way – a bit cooler.

‘We want it to be real. Not like these super-high-gloss beauty images that give people unrealistic expectations. In our shoots, we barely retouch.’
