Lateral flow tests are a quick and convenient way to detect the presence of COVID-19 antigens. They can be conducted at a test centre, or you can order lateral flows online to test yourself at home. Lateral flow tests are to be taken by those who are not displaying any COVID-19 symptoms but want to take it as a precautionary measure. This form of test will require a swab of the throat and nose or nose only. Your result will then be displayed usually within 15-30 minutes; however, it is best to consult the instructions for test specific advice. As with all tests, if you do receive a positive result, please consult the government guidelines* for the next steps to take.
PCR
PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing and is to be taken by those with symptoms of the virus. PCR tests look for genetic material of the virus that causes COVID-19, requiring a swab of the nose and throat. Unlike lateral flows, the results conducted either with a home testing kit or at a testing site will need to be sent off to a lab to be processed. You can expect to receive your results from 24 hours onwards; however, this may vary from one test centre to another.
