People have been using essential oils to benefit their health and wellbeing for a very long time, centuries in fact! Each oil contains different properties which could help enhance your mood, have a better night sleep, focus more, reduce tiredness and more.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential Oils are compounds extracted from flowers, fruits, bark, leaves, seeds, or the root of a plant or tree. The extracted oil contains the natural aroma of the plant, and each could offer you a unique health or wellbeing benefit.
To experience the effects of essential oils, they can be inhaled or applied directly to the skin. Repeat for about 10 minutes to allow the oil to work on your congestion.
Rosemary comes from the mint family and has an earthy, woody aroma to it, and it is a useful essential oil to have in your home. It could offer a wide range of uses which include relieving pain and inflammation, as well as lowering levels of stress.
If you have any aches and pains, you can try using rosemary oil to alleviate them by mixing one teaspoon of carrier oil with 4-5 drops of rosemary oil. Apply the diluted oil to the affected area, such as your temples for a headache or on muscle soreness.
Lemongrass is often associated with food, especially in South-East Asian cooking. It is very aromatic and distilled from the partially dried grassy leaves. It has a very uplifting scent and could work well to release your stresses from the day when added to a warm bath or diluted and massaged into the skin. It is also commonly used by massage therapists when treating sports injuries as it may help with relieving muscular aches and pains.
Citronella essential oil has a pleasantly sweet, yet slightly fruity aroma to it and one of its most common uses is as an insect repellent! Keep mozzies at bay by diluting a few drops of citronella with a carrier oil and massaging into the skin or adding a few drops to a wax burner in your home.
Peppermint has a very distinctive aroma and flavour and is well-known for its potential benefits supporting both your health and wellbeing. Peppermint is a popular choice for those looking to soothe digestive problems, relieving tension headaches, and alleviating colds.
As well as supporting physical ailments, it is also traditionally used to help improve focus and keep the mind alert.

Essential oils can be fun to use and beneficial for you but remember to take caution when using them. They are for external use only, so never swallow them or add to anything you will eat or drink. Do not use undiluted on the skin, always add to carrier oil. Avoid contact with the eyes, seek advice before use if you are pregnant, and do not use on children under the age of 5.
