Superdrug Pholcodine Linctus BP is taken to relieve unproductive coughs.


Relieves irritating dry coughs.

Warning or Restrictions

Do not use if: you are allergic to any of the ingredients, you have difficulty breathing or have chronic lung problems or an infection that produces lots of phlegm in the chest. Do not use if: you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) for depression or within 14 days of stopping one. Do not take: with any other cough or cold medicine. Do not use if: you are pregnant or breast-feeding unless on the advice of a doctor. Ask a doctor before use if suffering from a chronic or persistent cough, if you have asthma, suffering from acute asthma attack, or where the cough is accompanied by excessive secretions. Take special care if: your are elderly, you suffer from liver or kidney disease. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, in particular medicines which can make you drowsy including sedatives, strong painkillers or medicines for epilepsy, antidepressants, metoclopramide (to treat sickness), neuromuscular blocking agents, drugs for cardiac rhythm disorders, drugs to treat blood pressure, including water tablets. Caution: This medicine may cause drowsiness, if affected do not drive or operate machinery. This medicinal product contains sucrose, ethanol, E123, E110 and E219. See further warnings information.

Product Uses

Liquid for oral use. Adults and children over 12 years: Take one or two 5ml spoonfuls (5ml to 10ml). Children from 6-12 years: Take half to one 5ml spoonful (2.5ml to 5ml). The above doses may be taken up to four times in any 24 hours. Not to be used for more than 5 days without the advice of a doctor. Medical attention should be sought if the child's condition deteriorates during treatment. Do not give to children under 6 years. Do not exceed the stated dose.

Tips and Advice

If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before before using this medicinal product. Contains 8g of sucrose per 10ml. This should be taken into account in patients with diabetes mellitus. This medicinal product contains 6.6 vol% ethanol (alcohol), i.e. up to 526mg per 10ml, equivalent to 13.3ml of beer or 5.5ml of wine per 10ml. Harmful for those suffering from alcoholism. To be taken into account in pregnant or breast-feeding women, children and high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epliepsy. Contains E123 and E110 - may cause allergic reactions. Contains E219 - may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed). The use of pholcodine with alcohol or other medicines which cause drowsiness may increase side effects and cause toxicity in relatively small doses. Side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, excitation, confusion, sputum retention, vomiting, nausea, constipation and skin rash. May cause hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction). May cause slow or shallow breathing if taken in large doses.
