What is Bromelain? Bromelain is a mixture of different enzymes that are naturally found in very high concentrations in pineapples. Bromelain was initially used medicinally to help reduce swelling and inflammation after surgery, but today it is popularly used as a dietary supplement. The enzymes within bromelain are believed to work at any pH level, meaning that they can survive the acidic environment of the stomach.
