Making Over Motherhood

For Maternal Mental Health Week 2019, we wanted to support and encourage parents to showcase their imperfect parenting by admitting that being a parent is actually hard work. The week of activity shined a light on maternal mental health issues providing support and access to resources that can help. We gave parents an opportunity to talk, share feelings and seek support, especially for those struggling with maintaining positive mental health.

To help spark the debate, B. By Superdrug hosted a panel event on Wedesday 1st May in Central London.
The panel was chaired by mental health campaigner Jo Love, alongside our Customer & People Director Jo Mackie, with Clemmie Hooper (@mother_of_daughters), Jade Arrif @mother_ofall_adventures, Martha Faith @the_imperfect_motha and Shakira Akabusi @shakira.akabusi.

During the week, B. by Superdrug launched research which asked new mums about their mental health. This research revealed that 48 per cent of new mums have found motherhood lonely.
Despite the rise of online parenting platforms and communities, the research showed that mothers can find connecting with other mothers difficult and terrifying. Just one in four new mums aged 16 to 24 years old told us that they looked at online forums for support, with the majority of young mums asking their own mother for advice (77 per cent).
