Have you always worn your hair natural? No, I had my first relaxer when I was 8 on and off until about 16 then I began my natural hair journey. It was broken off and I decided enough was enough!
Why do you think so many girls and women are embracing natural hair today? When I began my return to natural hair, there were hardly any products to cater to natural hair. Over the years, we’ve become more educated and there are far more products available for us naturalists to embrace the curl. Youtube and Instagram especially has helped to put natural women on the map.
If you could only take one Cantu product onto a desert island, what would it be and why? I would take the Leave-In Repair Cream. It’s a must have!
What products do you tend to use for a Wash & Go style?I start with the Sulfate Free Shampoo, Sulfate Free Conditioner and then followed by Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream and then I’m good to go for the day.
Where is the best place for natural and curly haired girls to go for advice and product recommendations? I would recommend Treasure Tress, it’s a monthly subscription box with hair goodies for children, teens and women as well as a breakdown of how to use the products. It’s specifically for natural and textured hair so it’s also a great way to try out products before investing. I also find that natural hair bloggers I find on Instagram are great. The community is very sharing and always share tips and products with each other. My hairdresser, Unruly Curls, are also a godsend. I featured in their recent book which is all about curly hair.
What’s your favorite hairstyle at the moment and why?I love my curls out and free so I would say in its most simple form out! Another style I love, is a pineapple bun or maybe two braids! I keep it very simple, I'm a lazy curly girl!
Who do you get your hair influencers from? Is it a celebrity, friend, family member etc.?Growing up there was no one in my family with similar hair to me so I really took a shining to people like Diana Ross, Scary Spice and Alicia Keys. They were definitely someone I could identify with and what I wanted my hair to look like when I grew older!
Right now I’d have to say Solange Knowles. Her style, her hair, everything! I also love the fact that on social media, you’re never too far away from finding someone to inspire you. The media doesn’t show women who look like me so I’m thankful for the digital age.
What’s your favorite cocktail of Cantu products and why? I would say the Leave-In Repair Cream and the Hairdressing Pomade. They’re great for a nice slick look.
Do you feel like your hair type is represented in mainstream media well? We are getting there! I think we need to represent all textures of natural hair to ensure we appreciate all women of colour textures. I want to see more of these women on the front of magazines. I got into hair modelling because I wanted to embrace my curls and my gap! It's still my dream to one day be on the front cover of magazine the little girl inside me won't stop until I do and accomplish it!
If you could share one hair tip with a teenage you, what would it be? Experiment with caution. As much as I believe teenage years is all about exploring, don’t get to an age where you are crying because you no longer have edges or able to tie your hair in a hair band. Embrace what you have, learn to love your hair for what it does and how it looks.
If you’re giving yourself a hair treat, what do you do? Oh hair treats! Every Sunday is my hair therapy day. It’s my deep treatment day which I’ll enjoy whilst watching Netflix! A nourishing treatment like the Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream, cling film and a thermal head cap. Let all the goodness really penetrate through the hair.
What inspired you to become a curly/natural hair blogger?I didn't aspire to be a blogger, I aspired to build my confidence and to help young women – that’s my true passion! I guess, throughout the sharing and engaging on social media it gave me the opportunity to be able to work with brands and become a positive influence for young women. I do love receiving messages from parents who have mixed children and need some help with their daughters’ hair. I’m always like, no problem! So I guess my inspiration came from whatever I felt I needed when I was young.
