Male Grooming Tips
It’s one of most men’s biggest fears, and very few are lucky enough to escape it totally. Thinning, receding, balding… whatever you call it, hair loss will affect most men as they get older.

Find out what’s causing it
Now this is a tough pill to swallow but if it’s genetic, there’s no magical cure to turn it around completely. Most cases are genetic. You only need to look at your grandparents, who will bear it out. And look at grandparents on both sides – it’s an old wives’ tale that it’s just on your mum’s side. However, if your dad and grandparents have/had full heads of hair and you’re still experiencing a loss, it’s worth a visit to your GP to check for an underlying condition.
What really works?
There are only two proven treatments for male pattern baldness, minoxidil and finasteride (you might have heard of them as brand names Regaine or Propecia). Both of these can slow down loss. Discuss what’s best for you with your GP (finasteride is prescription only), or use the Superdrug Online Doctor service at https://onlinedoctor.superdrug.com/hair-loss-treatment.html.
Talk to your hairdresser
If you’re receding in a certain way or thinning in a particular area, your hairdresser will be able to recommend some clever styling or layers that will help disguise it. Don’t panic – we’re not suggesting a Donald Trump comb-over!
Use colour
Products designed to cover up growing-out roots temporarily can be useful to disguise thinning hair. Brush or spray in affected areas, then style as usual for the appearance of thicker, denser hair.
Try supplements
Healthy hair growth needs certain nutrients, so give yourself the best chance by taking a hair-growth-specific supplement.
Be gentle on your hair
Rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel after a shower might be a quick way to dry it, but it also encourages breakage, which will highlight thinning. Gently pat dry instead.
Grow bald gracefully
Once you’ve lost a significant amount of hair, it’s time to think about the best way to transition to being bald. The good news is that it can be done with style. As a general rule, short is better, so choose close crops or buzz cuts, which will look cool – and the bonus is that short hair always looks thicker.
Seek celeb inspo
Think of all the hot bald or balding men… Jason Statham (other half of supermodel Rosie H-W), Vin Diesel, Woody Harrelson, Jude Law. Do we need to go on?
