Should you be shingling? It’s the key to super-defined curls

If you’re a girl with some serious curls, you’ll know that it can sometimes be impossible to achieve killer definition and shine. Frizz is your foe, and you’re all too familiar with troublesome tangles. But you’ve grown used to them and wouldn’t trade your curls for anything. Well, what if we told you there’s a way to make the most of your squiggles AND avoid the not-so-good bits? We’re not having you on – we promise. The shingling method is a great way for girls with kinks and coils to get aaaall the definition they desire in their ’do.

First up, wash…

Shingling is best done on clean, deep-conditioned hair, so make that your priority. This process involves packing on the product, so you want a shampoo that’s gonna get rid of all the build-up. Our top pick is Shea Moisture Strengthen and Restore Shampoo, which cleans your hair like no other but won’t rob it of all its moisture. For deep-conditioning coily curls, there’s one product that’s stolen our hearts and it’s the Shea Moisture Shea Masque. This intensive treatment will moisturise and repair dry hair, as well as restoring its natural shine. It’s a yes from us!

Live for the leave-in

Leave-in conditioner is a MUST for curls, so it’s no surprise that this is next up. You need to distribute the product evenly throughout your hair, and the easiest way to do this is by sectioning your hair. Divide it into four sections (two at the front, two at the back) and rake through a generous amount of Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream. If you prefer using oil on your hair, go for Crème of Nature Argan Oil Strength & Shine Leave-In Treatment. Or if your hair can take it, use both – the more moisture the better! If you do this, use the oil after the cream to lock in the nourishment.

Dreaded detangling

Detangling is a bit like putting out the washing: a miserable experience, but it’s gotta be done – and it’s even more important with shingling. The way you detangle depends on your hair type, but the more knots you get out, the better the results will be. If you’re really against using brushes on your hair, be as thorough as possible with your fingers, but we recommend finger-combing, then going through it with a detangling brush, like the Denman D90 Tangle Tamer.

Let’s get ready to shingle…

You’ve done the prep and now it’s time for the technique that may just change your hair’s life. Grab small sections of hair at a time and make sure they’re wet – not just damp – and you’ll notice your hair separating into its natural curl pattern. Liberally apply Twisted Sista Amazing Dream Curl Gel all over the section. Then take each individual curl between your thumb and index finger and smooth the curl from root to tip. This will define and separate the curl, as well as getting rid of any excess product. Do this aaaall over your head – maybe sling a film on to keep you entertained!

Diffuse to dry

Once you’re finished (phew!), you’ll see that your head is covered with gorgeously defined curls, and all those clumped-together frizzy bits are gone. To lock the curls in place, you want to dry it asap, so grab your diffuser and get to work! For maximum bounce and volume, turn your head upside down to dry the roots. Once you’re all dry, you can use an afro comb to lift the roots for even more oomph.

TOP TIP: Using cool air from your hairdryer will help stop the gel getting crispy.
