London Fashion Week is known for throwing up some out-there makeup looks, and the SS19 catwalks didn’t disappoint. From brightly coloured eye makeup on the GCDS runway to Nicholas Kirkwood’s futuristic metal accents, there was a load of variety and even more creativity to take inspo from. We asked Francesca Abrahamovitch to help us translate the trends from runway ready to everyday makeup routine – and we couldn’t wait to get the goss from the celebrity makeup artist whose client list includes Rochelle Humes and Cheryl Cole…
Which LFW beauty trends to do you think are gonna be big hitters in mainstream makeup next year?
‘Glossy, radiant, super-hydrated, glass-like skin was seen all over the runways at LFW,’ says Fran. ‘This is a trend that easily translates into wearable everyday makeup.’ Indeed, it is – who doesn’t love a loada glow? But Fran predicts a more toned-down version taking the streets by storm in SS19, ‘with a strategic use of powder, depending on the individual’s skin type’.
Now onto eyeshadow looks and the bright colours ain’t going anywhere. ‘Bold eye colours were seen on a lot of the runways this season,’ says Fran. ‘The looks were fun and experimental. It wasn’t all about precision – it was more about washes, blocks or layered pigments paired with stripped-back dewy skin.’ Thank you, LFW, for reminding us that it’s OK to have fun with makeup. Fran suggests using this high-end influence to create looks ‘that have the contrast of a statement eye with fresh, natural skin. The result is really wearable and not too overpowering… ’ but still on trend. Score!
Any top tips for your everyday makeup lover who wants to recreate this LFW vibe at home?
Fran’s got some great advice – it all depends on your skin type… ‘If you have really dry skin, pair a luminating foundation with a cream or liquid highlighter and a light dusting of powder where needed.’ It’s a different story for oily skin, though. How do you balance oil control with dewy radiance? Before those of you with excess sebum throw in the towel on this trend, try Fran’s expert tips. ‘Use an oil control primer, followed by a matte foundation, then press liquid glow drops onto the high planes of the face.’ Not sure what foundation to use? Fran can’t say enough good stuff about the Collection Lasting Perfection Weightless Foundation. ‘It’s got a velvety smooth demi-matte finish to hide imperfections and even out your skin tone.’ If you’re prone to slick skin and blemishes, and wanna give the glow a go, try this base out for size – you won’t be disappointed.
What was your fave look from the runways? Are you gonna give any of the trends a go with your clients?
‘I really loved the beauty look for Victoria Beckham by the legendary Pat McGrath,’ says Fran. Didn’t we all – swoons. ‘It was all about subtly enhancing each model’s features with taupe shades, soft pinks and washes of cream contour and highlight.’ After a quick scroll through Fran’s Insta feed, you can see she loves creating this kinda vibe with all her clients, from Rochelle Humes to Alesha Dixon. ‘I really feel this is such a beautiful makeup look, which can often get overlooked,’ she says. ‘I believe that less is more with beauty.’ We feel ya, Fran.
Looks like the sparkly stuff isn’t going away any time soon. With party season coming up, what are your tips for applying glitter so it looks runway ready?
The key is to ‘apply sparingly and layer if needed. Glitter looks great when diffused over the eyes, lips or cheekbones – but generally I would say just choose one feature to focus on.’ But what about the fallout? It gets absolutely everywhere *cries*! ‘Always have sticky tape to hand,’ says Fran. Genius! A tap or two and all the fallout’s gone… thanks, Fran!
Slightly more on the classic end of beauty, red lips were all over the SS19 runways… what’s your go-to rouge lippy?
Like any beauty fanatic, Fran LOVES a red lip. ‘My go-to red lippy has to be Collection Velvet Kiss Lip Cream in Rosie. It complements most skin tones, so is defs an essential part of my kit.’ *Buys two*
Speaking of romantic reds, you just got married – woo! Are there any looks on the catwalk that you think would be perfect for the SS19 brides-to-be?
That’s right, Fran just got hitched to David Abrahamovitch – go check out their wedding pics for all the feels!
‘We had such a wonderful time,’ she says. ‘And, yes, absolutely! The soft washes of pinks, berries and browns over the eyes, lips and cheeks, creating a fresh tonal makeup look, is really beautiful for brides. Each feature is softly enhanced, while maintaining a really youthful, fresh look that’s universal and timeless.’ You don’t have to tell us twice, Fran – we’ve fallen for it already. Now to find someone who’ll propose…
