As soon as it starts getting colder, we overhaul our life to get in the mood for winter – and, yes, that includes finding a new fragrance. A seasonal scent has gotta be one that hits all the right notes, and in winter those notes fall into three categories: comforting, crisp and classy. The scent you go for depends on your perfume preferences and the vibe of the occasion, but it has to scream winter. If, like us, you’re on the lookout for a new scent, these are the notes that suit the season…
COMFORTING: When we talk about comforting notes, we mean those cosy scents that make you feel all toasty inside. Vanilla and tonka bean, with their warming sweetness, are perfect examples of this and great base notes for any winter fragrance. They’re like the hot chocolate of the scent scene, and, once revealed in the drydown, will make you feel ready to snuggle up every time you get a whiff.
CLASSY: Winter is all about partying, too! Once the season kicks into full swing, it can be easy to get lost in the glitz of it all – which is where your scent comes in. Stand out from the crowd with lashings of luxury peppered through your scent. Rich notes of liquid amber, saffron and champagne will see you through any gala, so keep an eye (and nose) out for these.
CRISP: Why do we want warm, cosy notes? Because of that fresh winter weather, of course! Nothing feels more seasonal than a walk on a crisp winter morning, followed by an afternoon snuggled up with blankets and hot choc. Finding fragrances that open with fresh citrusy top notes, such as orange and bergamot, and then dry down to a warming base replicate that wintry feel.
Now for the fragrances that are really gonna do the job…
Marc Jacobs Decadence EDP
Get ready to dazzle any dancefloor till dawn because this fragrance is aaaall about the glamour. Not only does it look luxe, but with a top note of champagne and a base of saffron and liquid amber, it smells it, too. This scent is the richest of the rich and great for gals who like the finer side of the season.
Calvin Klein Euphoria EDP
Another way to get richness and warmth from a fragrance is with a woody scent. With base notes of mahogany and an unctuous cream accord, this baby is ticking all our boxes. It opens with zingy top notes of pomegranate and persimmon, giving you that wintry fresh feel we were talking about.
Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey EDT
Talking about the crisp, natural vibe of a winter woodland walk, nothing takes our noses there better than this fragrance. It anchors fresh and floral notes in a base of cedarwood, musk, sandalwood and amber. A spritz or two of this and our cheeks are flushing with the freshness of it all – we’re absolutely in LOVE with it.
212 Sexy by Carolina Herrera EDP
With an opening mix of mandarin, bergamot and pink pepper, this fragrance is making us think of clove-studded oranges and spicy, citrusy mulled wine – oh so seasonal. And with warming vanilla and sandalwood at the base, the recipe is so right: a winter warmer if ever we smelled one.
Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal by Night EDP
If a scent has tonka bean on its ingredients list, you better believe it’s one for the winter. This addictive scent is both sweet like vanilla and spicy like cinnamon – mix that with sandalwood and you’ve got a heavenly blend of warm, heady woodiness that’ll see you through the season.
