Award-winning celebrity manicurist Stephanie Staunton tells you how to get the perfect stand-out mani this festival season…

What colours and designs work well for festivals?

Anything with glitter! I also like to mix neons with pastels. And I love a negative space manicure – this is where you leave the base nude and add detail to the top – a neon tip and a neon moon look really cute. Also, ombré rainbow manicures always look amazing.

How easy is it to do ombré rainbow designs yourself?

They’re really not too difficult. Try starting with a red nail polish, then a yellow, followed by blue, green and purple. While it’s drying, dab iridescent glitter onto the polish with an eyeshadow brush – the colour will change slightly and give the finish a bit more dimension.

If you could only take one nail accessory to a festival, what would it be?

Nail glue. When you’re like ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve fallen into a mosh pit!’ you can just stick your nail back on. Or – you never know – someone else might break a nail and you can help out. The Kiss glues are really good because they fit in your pocket. I also really recommend taking cuticle oil and massaging it around both the cuticle and the top of the nail, to stop it drying and cracking.

The best way to make your mani last for the whole festival?

Top coat. If you wear polish, apply a clear top coat every other day, to protect your polish.

What’s a good colour to go for if you have a lot of outfit changes?

Always a classic red. White is also good. And if you’re wearing a pastel dress, don’t go for the usual soft pink or neutral shade. A glossy black or dark navy looks great – and a bit unexpected.
