One thing’s for sure: 2016 has been a year full of weird and wonderful moments that have made their mark on the beauty world. From the first male CoverGirl ambassador to hair that glows in the dark, we couldn’t have ever predicted how eclectic the mix of 2016 beauty moments would be. In tribute, here are our top eight...
Alicia Keys went makeup free
In an essay Alicia wrote for Lenny Letter – an online weekly feminist newsletter - she explained she didn’t want to feel forced to wear makeup and that going barefaced made her feel empowered. For her most recent album shoot, she went makeup free and said it was ‘the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I’ve ever felt’. You go, girl!
Glitter made a triumphant return
Eyes and lips were adorned with all things glittering on the DKNY, Burberry, Fendi and Versace runways, while Naomi Campbell rocked a red, sparkly lip at the MTV Video Music Awards. Makeup brands followed suit with glittery offerings we couldn’t get enough of, and glitter-gone-wild Lab kits by legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath sold out in less than 48 hours. We really hope this trend continues into 2017!
The first male ambassador for CoverGirl was announced
At just 17, James Charles made history when he became the first male ambassador for American cosmetics brand CoverGirl – and he’d only been using makeup for a year! The high-school senior said it’s great that CoverGirl is pushing the boundaries and embracing diversity, and we couldn’t agree more. Check out his insta at @jamescharles.
Rainbow and glow-in-the-dark hair became a thing
Creative hair genius Guy Tang brought us amazing neon rainbow hair, reminiscent of a mythical mermaid. And it didn’t stop there. He also used his magical powers to create locks that actually glow in the dark!
We went unicorn raving mad!
From unicorn coloured highlighters, lipsticks and makeup brushes to locks actually twisted into the shape of a horn, it seems that 2016 is the year we officially went unicorn crazy – and we loved every second of it.
L'Oreal embraced all shades of beauty
L'Oreal launched their True Match Super Blendable Foundation this year, available in an incredible 23 different shades to suit all different skin tones!
The campaign itself was fronted by influencers ranging from Cheryl to YouTuber Rosie Bea to fitness expert AJ Odudu - all helping to break down the racial barriers in the beauty industry.
When Kendall and Gigi switched hair colours
Supermodels Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid shocked us all when they emerged at the Balmain after party during Paris Fashion Week - having switched hair colours! And the faux 'dos looked so realistic, for a second, we actually thought that KJ may have hit the bleach bottle and Gigi wanted to channel her inner Bella!
Applying '100 layers' of everything became a thing...
From foundation, false eyelashes, hair exensions, nail polish and just about everything in between, the internet went crazy for the '100 layers' challenge in 2016. But just incase you missed it, get ready for this...
