Girl exercising by the pool

Holidays are the perfect time to unwind but that doesn't mean you should just throw healthy living out of the window. Keeping fit on holiday, even if it's just small amounts of exercise, can lift your mood, help you to relax, improve your sleep pattern and overall give you that wonderful, feel good feeling!

Here are a few exercise tips to keeping fit on holiday:

The Early Bird

Start your day right by waking up early to go for a swim at the hotel pool. Even doing a few lengths in the pool for half an hour will burn 250 calories, make you feel wide awake, energised and ready to enjoy the full day ahead of you. It’s one of the simplest ways to burn calories and keep fit without putting strain on your body.

If you want a more intense type of workout first thing in the morning, take advantage of the hotel gym if your hotel has one before taking a dip in the pool to cool off.

Walking To Your Destinations

If you can help it, opt to use your feet instead of a bus or taxi to get to your destination when on holiday. There’s no rush to get from A to B (you’re on holiday after all) so why not take the scenic route? Use this opportunity to take leisurely walks with your group - even a small walking session will burn calories, and tone muscles in your legs, ankles and calves. Also, the swinging action you’ll make with your arms when walking will help to reduce the tension in your neck and shoulders joints, helping your body to unwind.

The Beach Workout

Going for a long walk or run on the beach might sound daunting, but trust us, you'll love it! Not only do you get to experience a wonderful view whilst getting in a great workout, the texture of the sand makes your muscles work harder as your body tries to stay balanced on the uneven surface. Going for a two hour walk on the beach will burn the same amount of calories as going for a four mile run on a treadmill.

Choose when to be Naughty with Food

Fancy cocktails and mouthwatering food all day sounds fantastic but too much bad stuff will quickly make you feel tired and sluggish. It sounds clichéd, but everything in moderation should be your mantra! Try to stick to healthy choices for 2/3 of the day, and remember there are healthy choices that are delicious too - opting for a fresh fruit salad rather than an ice cream will mean you stay healthy but don't feel like you're missing out.
