5 ways to have amazing sex

Alix Fox sex

If things are getting a little stale between the sheets, it may be time to shake up your bedroom habits with a few tips from our sexpert Alix Fox. We all hit walls when it comes to sex, but there are five things you can do to make sure each and every time is uh-mazing! And before you worry that you need to make drastic changes to turn into the sexiest thing ever overnight, think again. These pointers are a lot easier to put in motion than you might think. So, sit down, get comfy and take some notes – because these tips are guaranteed to get you and your partner geared up for better times in the bedroom.

1. Communication

Coming straight in at number one is the old classic – communication. Nothing will add more fire to your freaky time than a good, honest convo about your tastes, fantasies and any challenges you might be facing. Otherwise, how is either of you going to know what the other one wants?! Use Alix’s Care-Air-Share method to chat through anything you might be a little nervous about.

  • CARE: Let your partner know you care about them. Assure them that you’re 100% into them, you trust them and you’re enthusiastic to move your sex life forward. This will let them know that anything you say next is coming from a place of love.
  • AIR: Get it off your chest. Let them know what’s on your mind and what you’d like to see in the future.
  • SHARE: Open up the convo. Ask them what they think about what you’ve said and for their opinion. This stops it being one-sided and gives you both the opportunity to speak.

2. Make time for sex

Scheduling sex might not sound like the most romantic thing, but think about it. If you and your partner set a specific time and place, you’ll both look forward to it and build up the sexual tension by flirting with each other. This can lead to more exciting sexual experiences and amp up the fun.

3. Work yourself out

If you don’t know what you like, your partner is going to be fumbling around in the dark for a long time trying to work it out for you. Take some you-time to be, what Alix calls, your own ‘best-body buddy’ and really get to know yourself. Learn what floats your boat and what doesn’t – what touches work where? And what’s best left out of the mix?

4. Experiment

Although you should never do anything you’re uncomfortable with, experimenting can really spice up your sex life and make things a lot more interesting. Find that sweet spot where you’re comfortable being uncomfortable and let your guard down a bit. Keeping an open mind about sex will open you both up to new experiences.

5. Get silly sometimes

Last but not least is to shake off all the seriousness and be a bit silly sometimes. Things can get a bit blah in the bedroom when you’re occupied with perfection or performance standards. Try not to get caught up with all the expectations and just enjoy it. Have a giggle with your partner and be a bit silly – you’ll find that sex is waaaaaay better when you’re relaxed and being yourself.

Superdrug recreate iconic 90s hair dos

Crazy about the 90s? Who isn’t?! Telly was waaaay better and, when it came to hair inspo, shows like Sabrina The Teenage Witch and Saved By The Bell were the gifts that just kept on giving – we’re talkin’ butterfly clips and scrunchies galore! That’s why we decided to shake up our back-to-school hairstyles this year and give them a bit of 90s spice. If you wanna know how to recreate these iconic ’dos from your fave progs, just keep reading – and yes, there will be crimping…

Sabrina The Teenage Witch

For those of us who didn’t receive our Hogwarts letters, waking up on your 16th birthday and realising you were a witch was the next best thing. Magical powers aside, Sabrina (unlike Hermione) always seemed to have good hair, too… which seems unfair tbh. Since the ship has well and truly sailed for an education in magic, we thought we’d at least show you all how to recreate Sabrina’s iconic, super-simple butterfly clip hairstyle…

  1. Give your locks a good spritz with some of the Style Expertise Heat Styling Spray to protect your hair from damage.
  2. Section your hair and give it a going over with some straighteners to work out any waves and curls.
  3. Take small sections (about 1-inch thick) from around your hairline and pin them back individually using butterfly grips. You’ll want a line of clips going up and over the top of your head, from one ear to the other.
  4. Hold it all in place by misting your whole head with some of the Superdrug Ultra Firm Hold Hairspray.

That’s So Raven

Again, with the powers! Apart from being able to see the future, Raven Baxter, everyone’s favourite psychic, used to give us major hair envy with her fun and funky ’dos. She’s probs one of the only people (aside from Hit Me Baby One More Time Britney) who could pull off pigtails with such sass, so we thought we’d rise to the challenge and give it a go.

  1. Create a middle parting that goes from your front hairline right the way down to the nape of your neck. Try to keep this as neat as possible for a more polished look and leave out any shorter layers you might have at the front to frame your face.
  2. Tie each half of your hair into high pigtails using some scrunchies.
  3. Cover a comb with some of the Cantu Shea Butter Hair Dressing Pomade and brush your roots in towards where your hair is tied to neaten up any bumps and flyaways.
  4. Spray fringe with Style Expertise Heat Styling Spray and curl away from face with Superdrug Ceramic Curling Tongs for a look that’s just soooo Raven!

Lizzie McGuire

At last, someone #relateable. No magic powers, just an ordinary girl and her cartoon alter ego. Even if you didn’t absolutely LOVE Lizzie McGuire and her clumsy ways, you can’t deny that the girl had some major moments with her hair. From mini space buns to bandanas and headbands, she had it all going on. But we’ve all dubbed her queen of the crimp because, let’s be honest, that’s exactly what she was.

  1. Since we’re using heat, you’ll want to give your hair a spritz with Style Expertise Heat Styling Spray. Then split your hair into a bottom and a top layer, clipping the top one out of your way, to make crimping easier.
  2. Take 3-inch sections from the bottom and start crimping your hair with the BaByliss Pro Crimper 210. Simply clamp the tool down on the section you want to crimp. For that Lizzie McGuire moment, you’ll want to leave space between your crimped sections and try to make them line up around your whole head.
  3. Repeat this process on the top layer until all of your hair is crimped to perfection! Spray with Superdrug Ultra Firm Hold Hairspray to keep the texture in place all day.
  4. Because one bobby pin just wasn’t enough in the ’90s, use three or four to pin one side behind your ear (what was with that style anyway?!).

Saved By The Bell

Finally, we have to talk about fashionista Lisa Turtle from Saved By The Bell. Aside from rocking shoulder pads on a regular basis, she also slayed the super-fluffy high pony that everyone seemed to love in the 90s. And who better to take back-to-school inspo from than the sass queen of high school?

  1. Tie your hair into a super-high ponytail and secure with a scrunchie. Lisa always had a fringe, so leave some hair out at the front and sweep it to one side to frame your face.
  2. Fluff out your pony by pulling and teasing with your hands or even backcomb a little to get that Lisa level of volume.
  3. Use the Cantu Shea Butter Hair Dressing Pomade on a brush to neaten up any flyaways.

How to do a cut crease

If you’re a fan of the glam and you haven’t quite mastered the cut-crease trick yet, you gonna learn today! This technique will take any eye makeup look to the next level. It’ll give you more definition, more depth – not to mention, you’ll look like an absolute pro! To give us the lowdown on how to nail a cut crease, we asked Tammi from @makeupbytammi to give us a lesson…

Prime to prep

First up, you’ve gotta prep your eyes with something that’s gonna help the shadow stay where it’s meant to. Use your finger to cover your eyelids with Revolution Pro Eye Elements Eyeshadow Primer Central.

Apply transition shade

The first colour you want to apply is your transition shade, which is makeup speak for a shade you can blend out into your skin tone. This helps make the movement from deep-crease colour to skin more seamless. Tammi has gone with the shade Journey from the Revolution Pro Regeneration Eyeshadow Palette Trends in Azure. Use a fluffy brush to apply this to your crease with windscreen-wiper motions, then blend out the edges for a gorgeous blown-out look.

Deepen that crease

Now to add more depth and definition. Use the shade Voyage from the same palette and apply it to your crease, this time in a more controlled way than before, focusing the product in the socket line. For even more drama, add a touch of the gorge plum shade Vindicate from the Revolution Pro Regeneration Eyeshadow Palette in Unleashed to your outer corners.

Cut that crease

Time for the main event – cutting the crease, which is a fancy way of applying eyeshadow to give a harsh line at the crease, for more definition and GLAM. Take some of the B. Flawless Concealer Duo on a flat concealer brush and press it onto your lid. Start at the inner corner and stamp the product across your eyelid to the centre, following the shape of your eyeball (watch the video – it makes so much more sense when you see it!). Blend the outer edge of the concealer into the outer corner shadow with your finger. If you need to use a touch of Vindicate to help you, go for it!

Set with some sparkle

To set that creamy concealer and give your look the wow factor, apply the lilac shade from the Revolution Pro Supreme Eyeshadow Palette in Allure. You want this pigment to pack a punch, so press it on with a flat eyeshadow brush everywhere you applied the concealer. Make sure you keep the top line at the crease as neat as poss for max impact.

Tidy up

You might find that some of the action in the crease wants a bit more love, so go back in with Unleashed to deepen any areas that need it – use a really light touch, though!

Smoke it out

So far, we’ve paid a lot of attention to the lid and not much to the lower lash line, so everything is lookin’ a lil top heavy. To even it out, blend the shade Voyage from the Revolution Pro Regeneration Eyeshadow Palette Trends in Azure along your lower lash line, then deepen the outer corner using Vindicate. Load up those lashes with mascara and you’re done!

How to love your body

How to love your body

We’ve all been there – standing in front of the mirror, feeling inadequate. It’s normal to feel a bit crappy about your body, but that doesn’t make it OK. And if these feelings go uncurbed, they can lead to more serious mental and physical health problems. That’s why you need to hop onto the self-love train asap! Practising self-love or learning to fall back in love with your body if you’ve not had the best relationship in the past can be difficult. However, these four simple life hacks will help steer you in the right direction and get you back on track. Self-confidence is a beautiful thing and everyone should have it.

None of us is perfect

We all have lumps ’n’ bumps and dips ’n’ junk in places we’d rather not. But no one is perfect – there’s no such thing. Everyone’s beauty standards are different, and they should be celebrated. Accept your body for what it is and learn to love your quirks and imperfections. Wish you had a six pack? Bigger boobs? Just a smidge taller? Instead of focusing your energies on the negatives, accept that we aren’t Barbie and Ken dolls, and learn to love your body for what it is.

Don’t compare yourself

Yes, you’ve heard it before and, yes, it’s a cliché – but there’s a reason for it. Comparing yourself to others is an unhealthy habit to fall into. We’re all guilty of it, and social media makes it waaaaaay too easy to feel pants about yourself, but just remember – it’s not a true reflection of reality. Try to take what you see with a pinch of salt. If you still find yourself drowning in comparatives, break the pattern and unfollow the accounts that make you feel substandard, while following those that empower you… your mind and body will thank you in the long run.

Dress to impress…

… yourself! That’s right. Wear what makes YOU feel good, which will help give you more confidence. Whether it’s clothes, makeup or hair, you need to leave behind what others think and start doing you. Wanna wear bright orange lippy? Great, go for it! Hate wearing makeup and cba with all the fuss? Equally great, rock the au natural look. Putting yourself first in the way you look will help you make leaps and bounds in the direction of self-love and body positivity. Bottom line? Live. Your. Best. Life.

Don’t reject compliments

We find it easy to accept negative comments and own our faults, but we can’t seem to accept compliments. Well, you gotta kick that habit pronto, my friend. If someone tells you you’re looking guuuuuuurd, believe them – own it! And if you’re not sure how to accept a compliment, just say thank you… it’s that simple. For brownie points, try paying it forward and complimenting someone else – you could be making their day.

Everyone’s favourite! JK – we all know how tough burpees are, but they’re a great way to improve your all-over body strength. After all, no pain, no gain!

gif demonstrating burpees

Plank with elbow lift

The world went cray for the plank exercise and it’s easy to see why – abs, anyone? If you’re used to planking, throw in another element to make it tougher, like these elbow lifts.

TOP TIP: Stay as straight as possible and try not to rock your hips.

Oblique twist

This move will help strengthen your lower back and core, and if you do it persistently, it can also help posture. Switch sides after 15 seconds for an even workout.

Triceps dips

This is a real upper-body blaster and will work your triceps in ways that push-ups and bench presses won’t. It’ll also improve mobility – win, win!

Reps and sets

Spend 30 seconds on each of these workouts and take a 30-second break between each move. This will give you a 5-minute set. Grab some water, get your breath back and repeat that set twice more with another break in between. And there you have it – you’ve got yourself a 15-minute HIIT workout!

Track your progress in any way you like. Keep a note of the number of moves you can do in 60 seconds so you can see if your stats increase. Record yourself and track the improvement in your form and strength. And whichever way you choose, make sure you share your transformations with us on Insta by tagging #12weekchallenge. Good luck!

Not sure about you, but we defs got a kick out of the first month’s workout of the 12-Week Fitness Challenge. With those endorphins already flowing, it won’t take much motivation to get us into the swing of Month 2. As before, you want to do the workout at least once a week, but aim for more times if you can – it’s only 15 minutes, after all. We hope you’re seeing progress – time for the next instalment!

Month 2

Squat then kick

We love a squat, but we’re all about adding in a few extra elements, which target certain muscle groups. These squats with a kick will give your booty, glutes and hamstrings an extra burn.

Mountain climbers

This one is a hardcore heart pumper and will work muscles all over your body. We’re talking core, biceps, obliques, quads, hamstrings and more! Defs don’t skip this one.

Donkey kicks

Time for an all-in-one core, lower back, legs and booty workout. Donkey kicks are the perfect way to keep those muscles working but slow down on the cardio.

Spider-Man plank

Now it’s time for a core-crunching exercise that’s gonna work your abs HARD. The Spider-Man plank will improve your balance and tone up your tummy area.

Ins and outs

Keep those abs working with this exercise, which will attack your core and leg muscles. Power through it… your beach bod is only a few crunches away from fabulous!

Reps and sets

Spend 30 seconds on each of these workouts and take a 30-second break between each move. This will give you a 5-minute set. Grab some water, get your breath back and repeat the set twice more with another break in between. And there you have it – you’ve got yourself a 15-minute HIIT workout!

Track your progress in any way you like. Keep a note of the number of moves you can do in 60 seconds so you can see if your stats increase. How to combat dehydrated skin

DARE magazine's editor talking through dehydrated skin

Loads of us moan about dry skin and try to combat it by loading up our faces with thick, greasy moisturisers, which don’t seem to help that much. What’s more likely to be the case is that your skin is dehydrated. Dry skin lacks oil so can appear red and feel itchy, whereas dehydrated skin lacks moisture, which is what causes that uncomfy tight feeling and makes our faces appear flaky and dull. Sound familiar? To help us understand our skin a little more, we asked DARE magazine’s editor Tory Frost for her top tips on how to combat dehydrated skin.

Do you have it

Understanding your skin can sometimes feel like trying to learn a new language – impossible and, at times, unnecessarily painful *headache sets in*. So how can you know if your skin is dehydrated instead of just dry? Well, there are five signs that your face is thirsty, and if any of these sounds familiar, you could have a case of dehydrated dermis.

  1. Your skin often feels tight and uncomfortable.
  2. It’s dry and rough to the touch.
  3. Sometimes your skin looks a little sad and grey.
  4. Your complexion is dull and seems to lack a youthful, fresh-faced appearance.
  5. Fine lines show up quite easily.

So if you’ve got all this going on, what exactly can you do about it? Tory explains how certain skincare ingredients work for dehydrated skin and tell you about the products that have got her 10-out-of-10 stamp of approval…

Hyaluronic acid

This is an acid that occurs naturally in the skin, but that you might not have a lot of if you’re suffering with a dehydrated face. These acids are like super sponges and can hold about 1,000 times their own weight in moisture. Any product that contains hyaluronic acid is a great first step in your skincare regime – it’ll draw in all the good stuff from other products and leave your skin looking full, plump and healthy.

A spritz is a great way to get those key ingredients onto your skin without layering up thick products, and if you’re after a hit of hyaluronic, the B. Confident Hyaluronic Acid Facial Spritz is just the thing. Use it after cleansing to combat that uncomfortable tightness you might experience. It’ll lay down a solid base of hydrating goodness before you do your makeup. You can also use this throughout the day if you need a moisture boost.

If you haven’t jumped on the serum wagon yet, get your running shoes on and chase it down because you don’t want to be left behind. Serums are great for dehydrated skin because they’re super-lightweight and are backed with concentrated levels of all those stellar ‘skingredients’. Tory’s first serum pick for dehydrated skin is Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum. It’s really light and soaks into the skin quickly, and it’s jam-packed with hyaluronic acid, which will give you all the moisture-locking power you need. Next up is Superdrug Calm Skin Hydrating 2-in-1 Serum & Moisturiser. If you’re after a moisturiser without the greasy after effects, this is the one for you – oh and makeup goes on a treat over the top of it.

Glycerine is a humectant, an ingredient that holds on to moisture. It’ll also make your skin feel soft and supple – what’s not to like? Tory recommends using a face wash containing glycerine, to lock in moisture.

Face Wash

The B. Clean Sparkling Water Cleanser is great to use both as a morning cleanser and the second part of a more-thorough double cleanse. It’s a lightweight face wash that’ll get rid of any dirt and oils and leave your skin looking fresh ’n’ flawless.

When it comes to moisturisers for dry skin, Tory’s pick is B. Relaxed Comforting Moisture Cream. It’s not gloopy and thick, so it won’t leave your skin feeling greasy. Its lightweight, satin-soft formula means it will glide onto your skin like a dream and soak in easily. Also, you won’t have problems applying makeup over this, which makes it the perfect morning moisturiser. Alternatively, you could use it before bed after applying a serum and leave it to lock in moisture overnight. You can kiss goodbye to that tight-skinned feeling you have in the mornings!

Glycolic acid

There’s a lot of talk about acids here and, although they might sound scary, trust us – they’re not. Glycolic acid is actually an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), which is found in all kinds of fruits. See… completely harmless. These little fruit acids react with the top layer of the skin, evenly exfoliating your face by stripping away any dead skin cells, so you can say hello to brighter, smoother-looking skin.

Face pads

Tory suggests giving your face a once-over with Naturally Radiant Glycolic Acid Pads, which come soaked in this miracle-working, skin-saving ingredient. Use in the evenings on clean skin, then apply your serum and moisturiser on top. The exfoliating properties of glycolic acid mean all those other products will sink into your skin more quickly and easily, making glycolic a must-have ingredient in your skincare routine.
