Christmas Traditions We Can’t Wait For!

Christmas traditions including glasses of bubbles, Christmas tree and food

Whether you love or loathe it, Christmas is on its way and boy, have we missed it! The thought of wearing pjs all day, eating too much food and wearing a funny hat from a cracker. Yes please!

As we gear up for the festive season, it got us thinking at Superdrug HQ… what do we get up to every year that we only do at Christmas? Here's a round up on our faves and a sneaky peek at a few things you can pick up in our Christmas shop...

Food Glorious Food

Where do we start!? Mince pies, pigs in blankets, roast dinner, turkey sandwiches, bubble and squeak - the list of delicious food is endless! Did you know, in South Africa, they eat deep-fried caterpillars at Christmas? Gross! We’re glad that hasn’t made it to our nearest supermarket!

If you have space after your third helping of turkey and potatoes, then you’ll find a mouth-watering choice of sweets and chocolates at Superdrug to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Bring on the Baubles!

Choosing and decorating the tree is the most festive tradition we love. Do you? From deciding the lights outside to the colour theme for the year. Annoyingly there’s always a bauble that manages to smash within the first 2 seconds of being placed on the tree! Clumsy like us? No worries! Go for one of our chocolate or beauty filled baubles instead!

Which Glasses Suit My Face Shape?

Three females laying on the grass with different colour glasses on

Have you ever spotted a pair of super-chic glasses on somebody and found they look totally different on you when you pop into a store to try them on? It happens! Just like the clothes you wear or how you cut your hair, certain styles work on some people more than others - and glasses are just the same! So, if you’re in the market for a new pair of specs, it’s important to find a pair that suit your face shape. Not sure where to start? Take a look at our complete guide on finding the right frames for your face.

How Do I Find Out My Face Shape?

If you are not sure what shape your face is, there is a very simple way of finding out and all you need is a mirror and an erasable pen. Pull your hair back from your face and look straight into the mirror. Draw around the outline of your face in your reflection and there before you, will be your face shape!

My Face is Square

My Face Is Rectangular

If your jawline is almost as wide as it is long, then you have a square face shape.

Frames that will suit you:  Oval, cat-eye or rectangular with softened angles.

Frames to avoid: Rectangle frames with flat top or sharp corners.

Does your face appear to be slightly longer than it is wide? If so, you have a rectangular face with gorgeous high cheekbones and a slightly rounded jawline.

Frames to try: Larger frames with a wider lens or Wayfarer style

Frames to avoid: Small and rectangular

My Face is Circular

My Face is Oval

If your face is nice and symmetrical, then you’re part of the circular face club!

Frames to try: Try softer frame which draws attention away from your cheekbones and compliments your softer features.

Frames to avoid: Small round frames that accentuate your circular features

An oval face is considered the ‘ideal’ face shape for carrying off any style of glasses! Lucky you! Your gently curved jawline and well-balanced features are perfect for trying out a range of styles.

Frames to try: Try as many as you like! But we think rectangular or round frames will look great on you.

Frames to avoid: Any that are too small for your face.

My Face is Heart Shape

If your forehead and cheekbones are your most prominent features, then you have a heart shaped face and you will need frames that will balance your features.

Frames to try: Give square or rectangle frames a go

Frames to avoid: Styles that are wider at the top than they are at the bottom.

Virtual Mirror on The Wall... How Do I look?

So, now you know what face shape you have and hopefully, you’ve found a selection of frames at Superdrug Glasses Online you’d like to try, but how do you know if they’ll suit you?

Well, we’ve got that covered too with our Virtual Mirror.

Simply click the link above to upload a selfie, or you can use our pre-loaded model, to see how our frames look on your face. The virtual mirror will detect where your eyes are in the image and place the frames exactly where they need to be.  You can save any photos you like so you can compare them to other frames before making your final decision. How clever is that!?

Why not give it a go and see which frames look great on you?

Retinol Creams & Serums to Add to Your Basket

Cropped shot of a mature woman applying moisturizer to her face

So, you’ve heard of retinol but you’re a little unsure of what it is and how your skin can benefit from it? Well, we’re here to give you the low-down and to decode that scientific jargon that clutters up the beauty world! Read on to find out if your skin could benefit from the properties of this fabulous ingredient.

What is Retinol?

Retinol is also known as vitamin A - which sounds a lot less scientific, doesn’t it? It’s used in lots of skincare products, like serums and creams, due to its number of skin benefits. Retinol is not just a one trick pony when it comes to looking after your complexion, it is known to:

  • Aid in the production of collagen
  • Diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Exfoliate the skin
  • Speed up skin cell renewal
  • Fight free radicals

A Bit of Extra Info on Retinol...

It’s really important when using products with retinol to follow up with an SPF as it can increase your skin’s sensitivity to light. It is also not recommended to use retinol if you have rosacea, eczema or psoriasis as it can cause further inflammation to your skin. And lastly… retinol can be fairly drying, so if you already have dry or dehydrated skin, follow it up with a skin-quenching moisturiser.

Always check the label of your products for suggestions on how often to apply. Okay... now for the good stuff, the products!

How to Care For Your Hair this Winter

Girl walking in a snowy park

As we know in winter, when the temperature changes it can cause havoc on our skin, but did you know it’s also bad for our hair too? And with party season upon us, we need to make sure our hair looks and feels as good as we do!

We lose moisture from our hair, skin and nails so it’s really important to make sure we’re treating these parts with care just like we would our bodies and face.

Don’t panic though as we’ve gathered top tips and products that will make sure your hair is full of life and sparkle this season.

Get a Regular Haircut

It may sound pretty straight forward but it’s really important that you remove your split ends and dead hair. You should be getting your hair trimmed every 6-10 weeks depending on how the ends feel. Getting your hair cut is also a great way of removing the sun damaged bits of hair that have been destroyed while on holiday or by heated tools to prevent further breakage.

Don’t Leave the House with Wet Hair

Now you must have heard the old wife’s tale that if you leave the house with wet hair, you will catch a cold. This, thankfully, isn’t the case; colds are caused by a virus! However, it will take longer for your hair to dry and if it freezes, this can cause split ends! If your hair takes ages to dry, opt to wash it at night if getting up *that* bit earlier isn’t for you. Or a heat protection spray that helps speed up the drying time!

Dry Shampoo Will Be Your Bestie

To avoid drying out your hair and scalp, wash your hair less often and use a dry shampoo instead. This is great for giving your hair a little oomph! If you do feel like you need to wash your hair daily, switch to a cool, warm temperature of water rather than hot.

Pop on A Hair Mask

If you think doing a hair mask is time consuming, you’d be wrong. Whilst you’re watching a movie on a Sunday afternoon, putting a wash on or finishing an essay, just apply a moisturising hair mask and leave it in for 5-10 minutes before washing out. Better yet, leave one in overnight and cover your hair with a shower cap. One containing soy protein and fatty acids will help retain moisture in your hair.

Girl walking in a snowy park

Top up on Vitamins

We actually loose more hair in the winter due to the lack of moisture in the air and having a dry scalp. Taking supplements and making sure you have a healthy, balanced diet will help combat this and the right vitamins will help provide your hair with the nutrients it needs.

Oil Up

Using a hydrating oil will not only lock in moisture to your hair before blow-drying but if used after, help remove any static and flyaways. One containing added vitamins or Argan is best - but it all depends on your hair type so double check the label or with your hairdresser.

Go Sulphate Free

Sulphates are often found in shampoos and can strip our hair of necessary oils, so look for one that are SLS free or sulphate free to prevent this.

Get Whiter Teeth with Oral-B 3D Coconut Toothpaste

Oral-B Whitening toothpaste with coconut

The health and beauty benefits of coconut have been known for basically as long as coconuts have been a thing! The obvious ones are using coconut oil to cook with and to nourish your hair and your skin but did you know that coconut oil is also amazing for your teeth? Well, Oral-B know all about it and are sharing it with you in their 3D Whitening Therapy Coconut toothpaste. Here’s everything you need to know in a (coco) nut shell…

Oral-B Whitening toothpaste with coconut

Coconut Oil for Your Teeth

You may have heard of using coconut oil to naturally whiten and clean teeth using a process called oil pulling. This process involves putting a teaspoon of oil in your mouth and swishing it around for 10-15 minutes. This process, although loved by some, can be pretty bad for your drains, the environment and not to mention it may make you want to gag a little!

Thankfully, Oral-B have developed a toothpaste containing the well-loved oil to help your pearly whites shine without having to swirl it around in your mouth!

Tell Me About Oral-B’s 3D Whitening Therapy

Containing revolutionary stain dissolving micro-granules, the fresh tasting formula can remove up to 100% of surface stains in just three days - giving you a brighter, whiter smile in less than a week!

It also contains soluble sodium fluoride to strengthen enamel and help prevent cavities to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Coconut oil also contains lauric acid, which attacks harmful bacteria in your mouth which can cause bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. It’s especially effective at killing the oral bacteria Streptococcus mutans which is the leading cause of tooth decay.

What Does it Taste Like?

If you love your peppermint tasting toothpaste but also want to reap the benefits of coconut oil, then you’re in luck! Oral-B’s 3D Whitening Therapy toothpaste has a peppermint flavour with a touch of sweet coconut vanilla.

Detox Your Social Media with Dr Alex

Iphone on a desk with social media folder open on its screen

Mindless scrolling, swiping and liking has become a natural part of everyday life. On the commute? Check Insta. Waiting for an appointment? Log into Facebook. Friends late for drinks? Scroll through Twitter. The amount of time we are spending on social media, although it may feel like it’s just passing the time, can have an effect on how we feel, how we see ourselves and also how we perceive other people.

On Thursday 10th October it is World Mental Health Day, so to get us all thinking a little more about our wellbeing and how social media can effect it, we invited Dr Alex George (of Love Island fame, but also a doctor IRL) to share his advice on how we can all feel a little better about our online lives with a (well needed) social media detox.

Take it away, Dr…

What Does ‘Antibiotic Resistance’ Actually Mean?

Colourful assortment of pills and medication in their sheets

As the cold weather arrives, so do the dreaded cold and flu outbreaks. They can make you feel rotten and it’s tempting to visit your doctor as soon as illness hits, but it’s often not the best decision. You’ll either come away empty handed or with antibiotics that won’t make you feel any better.

Many people swear by antibiotics for beating a cold or flu, but this is actually a complete myth – antibiotics won’t do anything to improve the symptoms. Unfortunately, lots of us don’t know this and it’s leading to something called ‘antibiotic resistance’, which could become a big problem soon if we don’t tackle it.

We’re breaking down the myths surrounding antibiotics and offering some of our top tips for beating colds and flu at home.

Why Won’t My Doctor Prescribe Me Antibiotics?

Many of us might have visited our doctor when we’re feeling a bit rubbish, hoping for something to banish the annoying cough or aching, tired feeling we’ve come down with. Rather than leaving with something to cure us, most of us have probably left disappointed and frustrated when we’re told rest, rather than antibiotics, is (literally) what the doctor’s ordered.

Without making you feel like you’re back in science class, here’s a quick explanation of why antibiotics don’t get rid of colds or the flu. Antibiotics were created to treat bacterial infections, which get into your body and make you sick. Most of us have taken them before to treat things like chest infections and infected cuts. You might have also been prescribed them to get rid of a more personal problem, like an STI or urinary tract infection (UTI).

Colourful assortment of pills and medication in their sheets

What’s The Difference Between a Cold and an Infection?

The common cold and the flu are viruses, not bacteria. This means that antibiotics, which get rid of bacteria, will have absolutely no effect on them. Sometimes, people with serious health conditions will develop a bacterial infection as well as a virus, as their bodies aren’t very effective at fighting off illness. But, other than in those with weak immune systems, colds and flu should go away on their own after a week or so. Antibiotics won’t make you feel any better, unfortunately.

Taking antibiotics could even make you feel worse, as they often come with side effects like diarrhoea and nausea (and nobody wants either of those). They can also destroy healthy bacteria in your body, possibly leading to thrush and digestive issues (again, not desirable). So, unless you’ve been feeling seriously under the weather for more than a week, it’s best to fight a cold or flu with lots of rest and over the counter remedies.

Why Do We Need Antibiotics?

While the cold and flu will make you feel bad for a while before heading off to bother another poor person, bacterial infections don’t usually go away on their own.

Treatment, like antibiotics, is required to stop the person getting seriously ill. Nasty illnesses like meningitis and sepsis can be cured if they’re tackled quickly with antibiotics, but without them anyone who comes down with even a mild bacterial infection could become seriously ill very quickly.

Pills or capsules as a question mark and white plastic bottle.

Why is Antibiotic Resistance a Problem?

Antibiotics save lives, as bacterial infections like sepsis (blood poisoning) and meningitis will kill you if they’re not treated. If antibiotics become ineffective at treating bacterial infections, illnesses that are fairly easy to treat could have lifelong effects, particularly for those with weak immune systems or chronic health conditions.

It’s not too late, though. We can all help stop antibiotic resistance becoming a serious problem by treating colds and mild flu with over-the-counter remedies.

How Can I Treat Myself?

Instead of heading to your GP, visit your pharmacist when you feel a cold coming on.

Check out the cough, cold & flu section, where you’ll find effective medications like cold & flu capsules, lozenges to treat a sore throat and decongestants to help with a blocked nose. If you need advice or aren’t sure what you can take alongside any prescription medication, your pharmacist will be able to give you lots of great advice.

Alongside this, the NHS recommends getting plenty of rest, staying hydrated and taking paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease any aches and pains .

Our advice? Have a duvet day or two and catch up on that series you’ve been meaning to binge-watch. You’ll feel better in no time.

Closeup of face in blue contacts and white wig

So, you’ve decided that this year you want to take your party costume look to the next level by changing the look of your eyes with coloured contact lenses. Great, you’ll have the best outfit at the party – but before you do, it’s really important to consider the most reputable place to buy them and to ensure the safety of your eyes remains priority number 1!

Multiple shots of women's eyes in different colours

Where Should I Buy Them From?

Before you set out to purchase your lenses, always do your research first. It may be tempting to purchase the first pair of cheap lenses that you find online or to buy from a brand that’s being advertised on social media (usually highlighted with #AD) However, we cannot express caution enough with this shopping approach.

Contact lenses should ALWAYS be fitted by an optician, after all contact lenses are considered a medical device. Do you really want to be putting something into your eye from an unknown source, without talking to anyone or being shown how to use them safely? We hope not. Poorly fitted or contaminated coloured contact lenses, or improper use of them, can cause a potential corneal ulcer or even blindness!

Once you’ve been fitted with lenses by your optician, you’ll be given a copy of your contact specification which you can use to purchase your lenses online – it tells you everything about the lenses that your optician has said are best for you so you can purchase precisely the right thing.

To completely avoid aggravating your eyes, give the cheap websites selling coloured contacts in bulk a miss and pop into see your optician for not just your lenses, but for peace of mind too!

Woman with Cosmetic Colored Lenses in Optical Store

Top Tips to Remember

  • Always get fitted with coloured contact lenses by an optician
  • Every time you attempt to put them in or take them out, wash your hands! This is probably the most important tip of all! Poking and prodding your eyes with dirty hands is the worst thing you can do!!
  • Only wear them for the allocated time stated - whether it be up to 12 hours or less. You should stick to the rules to avoid causing irritation.
  • If your eyes feel irritated, try eye drops to calm the eye down or remove the contacts. If in doubt, take them out!
  • Don’t sleep with the contacts in - no matter how drunk you are! Wearing them longer than you’re meant to could also cause irritation.
  • Never share contact lenses - fun or not! You can spread harmful bacteria which can result in serious eye problems. This is a definite NO NO!

Coloured contact lenses are totally safe to wear if you follow best practise when purchasing them and wearing them. If you are nervous or worried about getting them, visit your local optician or head to Superdrug Glasses Online for some advice.

5 Ways to Deal With Period Pains

Superdrug Tampons with Flaylay Products

If you have never experienced period pain in your life, well... you’re extremely lucky! If you have, you’re not alone!

The pain sometimes feels like an intense spasm and other times, a dull and constant ache. You might also find they don’t happen at all or they come when ever they feel like it. Every woman is different.

If you're find yourself dreading that time of the month and are looking for ways to manage your pain (along with chocolate, movie-marathons and a duvet) we also find some of these methods work wonders...

Superdrug Tampons - Flatlay

How to Relieve Period Pain

1. Exercise - you might feel like this is the last thing you can to do but a little walk, cycling or swimming can help reduce pain.

2. Heat - a heat pad or hot water bottle, bath and shower also might help relive the painful symptoms.

3. Massage - a light, circular motion around your lower abdomen should help ease off the pain.

4. Take Vitamins - B1 or Magnesium may help reduce painful period pains, bloating and other PMS symptoms.

5. Relaaaaaax - activities like yoga or Pilates may distract you from feelings of pain and discomfort but also, help you relax.

How to Treat Period Pain

In most cases, it’s pretty easy to treat at home with some ibuprofen and aspirin. If you have asthma, stomach, kidney or liver problems - you should try paracetamol instead. If these don’t help, visiting your GP for something stronger like naproxen or codeine should do the trick.

Superdrug Tampon Boxes

What Causes Period Pain?

Period pain occurs when the muscular wall of the womb contracts. During your period, the wall of the womb will contract more vigorously to help the womb lining shed as part of your period. When contracting, blood vessels are being compressed in the lining of your womb. This cuts off the blood supply temporarily and the oxygen supply to your womb. Without oxygen, the tissues in your womb release chemicals that trigger pain.

How Long Will the Pain Last?

Period pain usually starts when your bleeding begins, though some women have pain several days before their period happens.

Thankfully, it should be pretty short lived and only last 48-72 hours though it can last longer. The pain is usually at its worst when your bleeding is heaviest.

His and hers Halloween makeup devil looks

Miss Devilishly Daring

Is it even Halloween if someone isn’t dressed or turns up as a devil?! This look isn’t for the fainthearted - approach with caution!

You want to make it look like you’ve made an effort and more than just putting on a pair of horns? Then this devil look is it. Lashings of liner is required for this and of course, that signature bold red eye that will warn off any unwanted attention. Add a moody, glossy lip to complete and get ready to party, you little devil!

If you’re feeling daring, sponge the white base straight onto your face, down the neck and try not to forget your ears either. Set with a powder like you would a normal foundation to make sure it’s going to stay put all night.

Step 2

Taking the I Heart Revolution Blood Palettegenerously apply a red cream eyeshadow onto your eyelids, up towards the temples, eyebrows and a little under your lower lash line. Set with a red coloured eyeshadow and a fluffy brush.

Step 3

Taking I Heart Revolution Blood Palette again, use a blending brush to create that dramatic contoured smokey eye with the red shades. Line your upper and lower lids with Revolution The Liner Revolution and for a dramatic flick, obvs. Add a dangerous amount of Revolution The Mascara for maximum impact.

 Step 4

Want to amplify your blood thirsty eyes? Use Revolution Pro Supreme Pigment Gel Eyeliner in Black inside the waterline and around your lash line. Apply haphazardly black face paint around your eye area and towards the temples.

Step 5

As for you lips, either make them all white with the Revolution Halloween White Liquid Face Paint and sponge that you previously used for your base or, if the lady is a vamp, line the lips with Revolution Renaissance Lipliner in Exempt and finish with a blood red shade from the Revolution Halloween Vinyl Liquid Lip in Nightmare collection.

To Finish The Look:

Straighten your hair and tuck a section behind your ears to frame your face. Finish the look with a pair or devilish horns!

Step 1

For your base, cover your face using the Revolution SFX White Base Face Paint to give yourself a ghoulish glow. Then, line your inner and the top of your eye, keeping close to your lash line, with the Revolution Pro Supreme Pigment Gel Eyeliner.

Step 2:

Using the black pigment from the Revolution Halloween SFX Ultimate Face Paint Palette, start to build out the colour from your eyes. Covering the lid and taking it up towards your hair line. Bring it down the nose a little bit, over the eyebrow and all around the eyes.

Step 3:

Once you have finished with the black, go in with the red shade from the same palette and graduate it through the colour you have already applied.  Use your finger to smudge the colour and take it up into the hair line. Aim to get each side symmetrical!

Next, would it even be a Halloween look without fake blood? Using the Revolution SFX Fake Blood, add texture and shine over the top of your black and red. Once you’ve added as much blood as you like – you’re ready to spook!
