Gothic Makeup Looks Anyone Can Try

Gothic makeup looks

Makeup trends from the 90s are undoubtedly iconic. Blue eyeshadow, brown lipstick, and glitter everything is a few that spring to mind. However, there’s one trend from the 90s that we're not prepared to leave in the past and that's gothic-inspired makeup! We're talking grungy black eyeliner, smokey red eyes and oxblood lips, but all with a modern twist!

If you are ready to embrace your dark side, check out these gothic-inspired makeup looks and how to create them yourself at home.

Look 1: Drama in The Eyes

Winged eyeliner is a beauty staple that never goes out of fashion, but to give it an edge you need to dig deep with the theatrics! With this look, the entire focus is on the eyes and it’s about as dramatic as it comes!

You would need the world’s steadiest hand to complete this look in one sweep, so take your time and apply it in stages.

Eyeliner trio

To tap into your inner rock chick, start by applying a light coverage foundation to create a base.

Next, to draw focus to your eyes line them all around with a liquid or gel eyeliner. Take your time here, start with your upper lash line, then move on to your flick and lastly apply black kohl eyeliner to your waterline.  For a more mesmerising finish, tap a little bit of silver glitter into the centre of your eyelids.

To bring the whole look together, overline your lips with a mauve lip liner and brush up your eyebrows with an eyebrow gel.

Look 2: A Killer Pout

There is so much more to the gothic beauty trend when it comes to luscious lips than straight-up black lipstick. Spice things up with sophisticated, vampy shades such as rich plums, dramatic burgundies, and bold berries to give your regular makeup look a moody makeover.

Lips trio

Love this look? Use a plum lipstick with a crystal clear lipgloss over the lop for added shine.

To complement your killer pout, apply a champagne eyeshadow to the centre of your eyelids and blend an earthy red into the outer corners.

Take the same earthy red to the waterline and gently smudge it out.

Carefully apply individual cluster lashes to your top lashes and a coat of mascara on your lower lashes.

Add a subtle highlight to the inner corner of your eyes and contour your cheeks to complete this gorgeously glam look, with a twisted edge.

For your dark souls out there, how about giving these a go?

3: The Lady is a Vamp

If there was ever a look that proved dark, mysterious makeup could be sexy, then this is it! This gorgeously, alluring vampy makeup look is guaranteed to turn heads when you walk into a room!

vampy trio

Start by applying a full coverage base - you don’t want to go too light as any blemishes in your complexion may be pulled out by your red eyeshadow or lipstick.

For the smouldering, red eyes blend a plum red eyeshadow over your lid, up towards your brow bone and below your waterline.  Then, apply kohl eyeliner to your upper lash and waterline, gently blending your upper lash line out.

Finish this look by lining your lips with a blood-red lip liner and filling with a matte red lipstick.

Let the Random Acts of Kindness Continue

Female holding hands up in a heart

The Coronavirus pandemic and all that it has bought with it is something that we are unlikely ever to forget. However, throughout the challenging and often uncertain times, we saw an unprecedented amount of kindness. If you are struggling with the 'new normal' or are just having a bad day today, let's remind ourselves of how this year has bought us all together and how we can continue to support one another.

Stronger Together

Over the summer, when the first wave in the UK was at its peak, the nation came together in so many ways to keep spirits up and to help one another. For example, millions of pounds were raised to support the NHS and supporting charities through a series of virtual activities, strangers were helping strangers to ensure vulnerable people weren’t left without, brands have donated thousands of products to those in need and our NHS workers and let’s not forget the weekly Clap for Carers that erupted across the UK every Thursday evening for ten weeks.

Every single act of kindness, no matter how big or small, showed that people helping people can have a significant impact. So, as the lockdown restrictions continue to change, we encourage you to carry on the kindness as we readjust to life as it has become today.

Let the Kindness Continue

Not sure how you can help? How about trying some of these ideas?

Send a Motivational Message

Messages of kindness can be the difference between someone having a good or bad day. Tell your family you love them, remind your friends you’re proud of them and tell your colleagues they’re doing a fab job! You never know your positive message could change their day.

Make Your Server's Day

The hospitality industry has been hit hard this year, with places having to close, let people go, or cut their operating hours. If you are in an area where you can visit a coffee shop, bar or restaurant and safely social distance, remember that showing compassion to your server can go a long way!  Make eye contact with them when placing your order, ask them how their day is going, smile and if you can, tip generously!

Be Kind, Shop Kind

Of course, it is not just workers in the hospitality industry who have worked through the pandemic to ensure our 'normal life' remains as 'normal' as can be! Essential shop workers also showed up throughout the pandemic so we could have access to health and wellbeing essentials too.

In July, Superdrug launched the 'Be Kind, Shop Kind' initiative to support their in-store staff who were sadly experiencing a worrying increase in negative interactions with some customers in response to safety measures in-store. To find out more about how you can 'Shop Kind' and what Superdrug are doing to look after their staff, take a look at our post here: Be Kind, Shop Kind at Superdrug.

Share Your Newfound Skills

Who discovered in lockdown that they were a surprisingly good baker? Or perhaps you used your free time to learn a new craft or even a language? Whatever it was, why not teach someone in your household or 'bubble' something new you picked up and share the experience?

Raise Awareness for a Good Cause

During the lockdown running 5k for charity or donating to someone who was raising money for a worthy cause became the 'norm' and highlighted there are so many opportunities out there to raise awareness and funds. So, as we continue to support one another, why not check out ways in which you can support a charity in need? Supporting a charity doesn't always mean raising money, simply sharing a post on social media or checking out how you can help out in your local area can make a difference.

How to Care for Your New Beauty Studio Piercing

Beauty services feature image of bruneette girl with her ears pierced and a yellow headband

Getting your ears pierced is like receiving the key to a whole new world of accessory opportunities! But once your new bling is in place, it is really (really) important that you take good care of it.

If you have recently had your ears pierced at Superdrug’s Beauty Studio, our fabulous team will have taken you through the aftercare process. However, if you need a reminder or are thinking about using our service, here is everything you need to know about caring for your new piercing.

Beauty Studio piercing and earrings

Aftercare Basics

At Beauty Studio, we offer lobe and upper cartilage piercings and depending which you go for will depend on the healing process. However, there are some basics which should be followed for both kinds of piercing.

  • Always wash and dry your hands before touching or cleaning your new piercing.
  • Clean your piercing two to three times per day with your after piercing solution (more on this in a moment)
  • Ensure you are cleaning both the front and back of the earring, not forgetting between the jewellery and skin.
  • Rotate your new earring 180 degrees left and then 180 degrees right a few times while you are cleaning it. Be careful not to get any hair caught in the process and turn it gently.
  • Do not remove your earrings during the healing process.

Aftercare Solutions

At Beauty Studio, there are two types of aftercare solution available – the ‘After Piercing Solution’ and the ‘Advanced After Piercing Solution’.

After Piercing Solution

If you come into Beauty Studio for a piercing, we will give you our After Piercing Solution for Free (usual cost £4) which offers the following benefits:

  • Healing time: 6 weeks for lobes and 12 weeks for a cartilage piercing
  • Effective cleansing of the piercing site
  • Cruelty-free and vegan formula
  • PH neutral, non-irritating and soothing

Advanced After Piercing Solution

Do you want to save time on the aftercare process? If so, our Advanced After Piercing Solution is for you! It uses the most advanced technology in the aftercare market to reduce healing time for lobes from 6 to 3 weeks and cartilage piercings from 12 to 8 weeks!

Not only does it speed up the healing process, the Advance After Piercing Solution also:

  • Minimises redness and irritation
  • Cleans the skin without stinging it
  • Closes the pores to seal and protect the skin around the new piercing
  • Works with the body to protect your new piercing
  • Provides anti-microbial protection without causing irritation

And on top of all that, it is also vegan and cruelty-free!

The Advanced After Piercing Solution is just £8 and available at Beauty Studio.

How to Tell Your Piercing is Healing

When you get a new piercing, it is perfectly normal to experience a little bit of pain, heat, inflammation, and redness in the pierced area. This is your body telling you that something is there that probably shouldn’t be!  It’s important to be patient - it may take your body a few weeks to accept the new jewellery and to kickstart the healing process.

During this time, you may feel tenderness and it may ooze a little bit but that’s fine, just remember to keep the area clean at all times.

Everyone’s healing time will differ, but the main signs that a piercing is healed and that you can change the jewellery is when:

Remember to wait for the full recommended healing time before changing your jewellery and once that time has passed you can look for the main signs that the piercing is healed, which include:

·       There is no more swelling, redness, or inflammation

·       You can lay on the piercing without pain or discomfort

·       The edges of the piercing are smooth and pull inwards

·       There is no more ‘oozing’ or crust around the jewellery

·       The earring can move freely

If in doubt, do not remove your jewellery. Pop back into your local Beauty Studio and one of our lovely piercers will be able to advise you further.

Easy Halloween Makeup Ideas Using Just Your Eyeliner

halloween skull makeup

No time to prepare for Halloween and your party is just moments away? Have no fear, we’ve got you covered. Follow our quick and easy Halloween tutorials where all you need is just the humble black eyeliner and a spare five minutes.

infected halloween look 7

What will I need to achieve these last minute Halloween looks?

These Halloween makeup tutorials will show you how to achieve three fun looks using just a black eyeliner. All you need to do is prep your skin, apply foundation and add a little bit of mascara – everything else can be achieved with your eyeliner.

B. Cosmetics B. Pro Duo Eye Liner Black £6.99 Buy Now

Look 1: Infected

Step 1

Draw a thick line underneath your eye. Make sure you cover your water line, your lash line and underneath the eye too.

infected halloween look 8

Step 2

With a light motion, draw a thin line going down from your eye on your cheek. The line should resemble a vein or a tree branch, so don’t worry about making it symmetrical or perfect.

Step 3

From the line you’ve just completed, draw another one. This one should be much shorter and thinner. Draw another two or three “veins” connected to the main one.

infected halloween look 10

Step 4

Continue drawing at least 6 thick lines and attached smaller “veins” on each eye. These can be random lengths and varying thickness.

Step 5

After you’ve completed your eyes, it’s time to make your lips look infected too. Following the same style, draw thick lines with a few attached “veins” heading from your bottom lip to your neck or even collar bone. You can make this look as intense or as subtle as you want.

Step 6

Make sure your hair is messy. You can do this by putting your head down and messing it up with your hands or back combing it, and finally setting it with hair spray.

Look 2: 20s Flapper Girl

Step 1

Go for a sleek low ponytail or bun and make sure your hair is pulled back as tightly as possible.

20s flapper halloween 2

Step 2

With your eyeliner, draw a thin round eye brow above your natural brow. Ladies in the 20s used to conceal their natural eye brows or shave them off completely and opted for a pencil-thin line instead. Don’t worry if your natural eye brow hair is left visible, simply make sure your drawn-on eye brow line is as round and dark as possible.

Step 3

Remember that flapper girls in the 20s liked a strong curl or two. Recreate this by drawing three kiss curls on both sides of your face. You can add more curls, depending on how intense you want this look to be.

Step 4

Line your lip with the eyeliner, making sure the Cupid’s bow is really defined. Add a beauty spot on your cheek.

Step 5

If you have some pearls in your jewellery box, these will add a glamorous touch to the look. You can also use a headband with feathers and a fake cigarette holder to really embrace the vibe of the 20s. Finish off the look by wearing a little black dress.

Look 3: Skull

halloween skull makeup

Step 1

Back comb your hair to form a beehive hair style. It can be as messy or as sleek as you want.

Step 2

Using your eyeliner, mark the area of your eye you’d like to paint black to resemble the hollow area of the skull. Afterwards, paint it fully in. A great tip is to keep the top part of the skull eye curved in the opposite direction to your eyebrow.

Step 3

Repeat the same technique on the other eye. Make sure you paint over your eye brows and your water line. This look will require a lot of eye liner!

Step 4

From the curved points on top of the skull eye, draw a few lines to resemble bone cracks. Draw a few cracks on the side of the skull eye too for extra effect.

halloween skull makeup

Step 5

It’s time to draw on the nose. Draw two triangles and fill them in. This will create the effect of a completely dark and hollow area where your nose is supposed to be. You can add a few small cracks too.

Step 6

Draw two horizontal lines from each corner of your mouth. Then draw short vertical lines on your lips across the horizontal ones. Do it both above and below the line.

Step 7

Draw arches between the short lines to create the skull’s teeth.

Ready to go!

Enjoy this easy and quick Halloween skull look. If you decide to go for this look, make sure you smile throughout the whole night – it gives an added scare factor.

Take the eyeliner off in a swipe:

Don’t worry if you didn’t have time to make or buy a costume this Halloween. You can achieve these quick and easy last minute Halloween looks just using a black eye liner. With a little imagination, your look can definitely be the most memorable of the entire night.

Mask-Proof Your Makeup with Our Top Tips

A row of Maybelline long lasting foundation in different shades

Wearing a face mask to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 has become a part of everyday life. However, for those who love to wear makeup on a daily basis, this has created a few issues as the heat and friction of the mask can cause products like foundation to smudge or rub off altogether. So, to keep your make up looking as slick as the moment you applied it, here is our guide one some of the best long-lasting foundations around and tips on how to keep your makeup looking fresh.

Woman looking in the mirror and applying foundation or blusher on her face

Step 1: Prep Your Base

Once you’ve applied your skincare, a primer is essential to ensure your foundation stays put. Primers like Rimmel Lasting Matte Primer work to reduce sweat and shine, so any makeup you apply on top is less likely to slip off.

Rimmel Rimmel Lasting Matte Primer £7.99 Buy Now

Step 2: Use a Long-Lasting Foundation

If you’re wearing a mask for several hours a day, then your foundation needs to work a little harder to stay smudge-proof. Maybelline’s Superstay 24 Hour Full Coverage Foundation is pigment-rich, with a lightweight texture and a matte finish. Trust us, this will be a worthy opponent to match your face mask!

Another hero is Max Factor’s Facefinity All Day Flawless 3 in 1 Foundation, which contains a built-in primer and concealer for extra coverage and hold.

While Revolution Conceal & Define Foundation is oil-free and dries to a semi-matte finish that’s less likely to rub off. (It comes with a doe-foot applicator, making it convenient for touch-ups on the go.)

Step 3: Lock it in with Setting Spray or Powder

The same way you would use a top coat over your nail colour, a setting spray can provide that extra layer of insurance to avoid your foundation slipping and sliding off. Once you’re happy with your base makeup, a few spritzes of NYX Professional Makeup Matte Setting Spray are all you need to make it last all day. A dusting of translucent powder can work in the same way; Collection Primed & Ready Invisible Setting Powder includes anti-bacterial witch hazel to combat breakouts (so it can help prevent maskne at the same time!).

Step 4: Make Your Eyes the Main Event

If you’re normally fond of a bold lip, you might want to switch to focusing on your eyes if you’ve got a mask on. And few things create a statement eye look like a sweep of liquid eyeliner! Rimmel Wonder’Ink Liquid Eyeliner has a convenient felt tip applicator, to create a clean cat’s eye flick. And as your brows will also be on display, ensure they are neatly groomed – this is easily achieved with a slick of brow mascara, such as MUA Brow Define Eyebrow Tint.

(NB. If your skin tends to be on the oily side, prep the eyelid with a dab of primer such as Revlon Colorstay Eye Shadow Primer.)

Affordable Skincare Routines for All Skin Types

Three females and a male looking down and smiling in a huddle

If you’re thinking of upgrading your skincare routine, you don’t have to spend a fortune. We’ve handpicked the best quality skincare that will give you the most bang for your beauty buck, so you can achieve your dream complexion.

Read on to discover a skincare routine that's simple to follow, affordable, and tailored to your skin type.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is normally when you have dry cheeks and an oily T-zone. It can also be oilier or dryer at certain times of the month or year. If your skin is a little temperamental, then this is the routine for you.

Photo 1

Step 1: Cleanser

A face wash is an effective way of getting rid of the day’s accumulated grime and excess oil so your skin isn’t left congested and dull. This one is also gentle on sensitive skin and fragrance-free, so it won’t leave dry patches or your skin feeling even more parched and irritated.

Step 2: Toner

A toner sweeps away any lingering dirt and oil, as well as restoring your skin’s PH levels. This formula is dermatologically approved and enriched with pro vitamin B5, so it will leave your skin balanced, but also hydrated.

Step 3: Serum

This serum has been specially formulated to be sensitive on the skin, so it’s unlikely to cause irritation (which can make oily patches oilier or dry patches drier!).

Simply Pure Simply Pure Face Wash 150ml £2.99 Buy Now
Simply Pure Simply Pure Refreshing Toner 200ml £2.99 Buy Now
Simply Pure Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum 50ml £3.29 Buy Now

Step 4: Mosturiser

Thanks to its built-in serum, this moisturiser absorbs deeply to quench your dry cheeks, while refining fruit acids work to exfoliate and de-congest oily areas.

Weekly Face Mask

A weekly sheet mask can give your tired, dehydrated skin an extra hydration boost. This mask is brimming with nourishing Vitamin E to leave your complexion radiant and renewed.

Naturally Radiant Superdrug Naturally Radiant 2 in 1 Moisturiser & Serum £7.49 Buy Now
Vitamin E Vitamin E Sheet Mask £1.99 Buy Now

Dry Skin

Dry skin is lacking in oil, so it can often feel irritated and tight, as well as having a rough, flaky texture.  It’s also prone to fine lines and redness. Treat it with this results-driven regime.

Photo 2

Step 1: Cleanser

As dry skin is more likely to be sensitive, you need to make sure the cleanser you use isn’t too harsh or it will dry the skin out further. This gentle formula ticks all the boxes.

Step 2:

If your skin is dry, it’s often dehydrated. This serum features hyaluronic acid, which works to increase the skin’s water levels, soaking up moisture like a sponge to keep it plumped and happy.

Simply Pure Simply Pure Calming Cleanser 200ml £2.99 Buy Now
Me+ Me+ Hyaluronic Booster 30ml £5.99 Buy Now

Step 3: Moisturiser

Moisturiser is essential for dry skin, to keep it nourished and comfortable, while strengthening the skin barrier to lock in hydration. This features brightening vitamin C to leave skin looking renewed and to protect it from environmental damage.

Weekly Face Mask

For whenever your skin is feeling particularly thirsty or weatherbeaten, the ‘hero’ ingredient in this mask is shea butter, which is a powerful emollient to leave skin feeling soft and replenished.

Superdrug Superdrug Vitamin C Gel Moisturiser 75ml £4.99 Buy Now
Superdrug Superdrug 2 Step Serum and Sheet Mask £2.99 Buy Now

Oily Skin

Oily skin tends to produce too much sebum, which makes the skin look shiny or greasy, prone to congestion and spots. Here’s how to take care of it.

Oily skin 2

Step 1: Cleanser

Foaming cleansers are a good idea for oily skin as they are excellent at removing excess dirt and oil. This contains hydrating niacinamide, so it won’t dry the skin out in the process.

Step 2: Toner

An acid toner exfoliates the skin at a chemical level, to dissolve dead skin cells and excess oil, which can lead to breakouts. This affordable toner features the star ingredient glycolic acid for a clear, radiant complexion.

CeraVe CeraVe Foaming Cleanser Normal to Oily Skin 236ml £9.49 Buy Now
Naturally Radiant Superdrug Naturally Radiant Glycolic Tonic 5% 100ml £6.99 Buy Now

Step 3: Serum

Just because your skin is oily doesn’t mean you should dry it out (it will only react by producing even more oil!). This lightweight night serum will leave it feeling moisturised - but not greasy.

Weekly Face Mask

Oily skin is prone to looking congested and dull. This hardworking clay mask will help draw out impurities and mop up excess oil, with antibacterial witch hazel to prevent blemishes.

Simply Pure Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Night Serum £3.99 Buy Now
Superdrug Superdrug Dead Sea Purifying Clay Face Mask £0.99 Buy Now

Whether you have oily, dry, or combination skin you'll find an incredible selection of affordable skincare products available at Superdrug for you to try!

What is Mask Associated Dry Eye (or M.A.D.E)?

Female with natural curly hair, glasses and a face mask

To help stop the spread of coronavirus, we have all got to do our part by wearing a face mask or covering when necessary. Whether you’re in a shop or travelling on public transport, it’s becoming a part of everyday life.

However, if you wear glasses or contact lenses you may be aware of the few issues caused by your face covering. First, we were all walking around with fogged up glasses and now, people are experiencing dry eye or ‘mask associated dry eye’ (M.A.D.E), as it is now known.

If you have been experiencing dry eye caused by your face mask, read on to discover what is causing it and how you can relieve the symptoms.

What is Mask Associated Dry Eye?

Mask associated dry eye is when air that you have breathed out escapes through the top of your mask and goes across the surface of your eyes (the same action that causes your glasses to fog up). When your eyes are exposed to an increased amount of warm air, it can cause your tears to evaporate resulting in dry, irritated eyes.

It’s not just those wearing glasses which are affected, contact lens wearers who already experience dry eyes may notice that it’s becoming an even more regular occurrence.

Asides from your eyes feeling irritated, if they become dry, they may also be sore, feel gritty, blurry, appear red, and you could even be more sensitive to light.

Tips for Preventing Mask Associated Dry Eye

It’s still important that you continue to wear your face covering as and when required by the Government guidelines; however, it doesn’t mean you should be uncomfortable with itchy eyes!

To help relieve the symptoms of dry, itchy eyes, read on for our top tips:

1. Make Sure Your Mask Fits

If air is escaping through the top of your mask and irritating your eyes, it means your mask does not fit properly. Not only will this keep causing issues with your vision, but it’s also not serving its purpose of keeping yourself and others around you safe.

To keep the air from travelling upwards, pinch the nosepiece of your mask so it fits the bridge of your nose and adjust the ear loops, so it fits your face. If you cannot adjust the mask around your nose, try taping it in place with a piece of surgical tape. However, be careful not to stick the tape so it pulls down on the skin which can also cause your eyes to be exposed to more air.

2. Lubricate Your Eyes with Eye Drops

For instant relief of dry eye symptoms, you can try using lubricating eye drops such as the Artelac Everyday Dry Eye Drops which tackles all symptoms of dry eyes immediately. Alternatively, the Hycosan Extra Dry Eye Drops soothes and moisturise your eyes from day one and can be used for up to 6 months from opening.

Before applying your eyedrops, remember to thoroughly wash your hands before and after and do your best to put them in at home, so you don’t need to touch your face in public.

Hycosan Hycosan Extra Dry Eye Drops 7.5ml £11.99 Buy Now
Artelac Artelac Everyday - dry eye drops 10ml £8.99 Buy Now

3. Limit Your Time in Air-Conditioned Rooms

Lastly, help protect your eyes further by limiting your time in air-conditioned or windy environments such as an office or supermarkets. The circulated air is likely to dry your eyes out much quicker.

If you need further advice on how to treat dry eye, then do not hesitate to give your local opticians a call! Alternatively, visit Superdrug Glasses Online for more tips and advice.
