Which Protein Powder is Best For Me?

If you’re a regular gym bunny, love an evening pounding the streets on a run or are up at the crack of dawn for a spin class before work, firstly - go you! Secondly, are you feeding your body what it needs to recover before your next sweaty session?

People who regularly exercise will consume protein, in the form of shakes, to help maximise muscle gain, aid in weight loss, boost their physical performance and to enhance their energy.

With so many protein shakes and options on the market, how do you know which is the right one for you?  Read on to learn more about the most popular options out there and get ready to shake it up!

What Are Protein Powders?

Protein powders come in a variety of different forms, but they mostly consist of protein from soy, pea or dairy with or without added carbs, plus other performance enhancing ingredients including vitamins and minerals.  The powder can be mixed with water (not usually the best tasting!), milk or plant-based milk, such as almond or coconut, to turn them into a milkshake type drink.

The Most Common Types of Protein

1. Whey Protein

If you’ve seen weightlifters in the gym drinking shakes, the chances are they are drinking whey protein.  Studies have shown that whey protein, which is easily digestible, may help increase muscle mass, aid in a speedy recover after heavy exercise and it may also help reduce your appetite and promote fat loss.

2. Casein Protein

Casein is a dairy based protein, sourced from milk, that is known as a ‘slow release protein’ due to its slow absorption into the gut.   This means it releases amino acids at a much slower rate than other animal-based proteins do. Athletes will often find it beneficial to consume casein protein after a workout, or even before bed, to aid in muscle recovery and to reduce muscle breakdown. Casein has been proven to aid help in increasing muscle growth and strength.

3. Pea Protein

Favoured by vegetarians, vegans and those allergic to dairy or eggs, pea protein is sourced from the fibre-rich yellow split pea.  Pea protein is rich in amino acids which are vital in aiding muscle growth, weight loss and to maintain a healthy heart.

4. Hemp Protein

Another source of plant-based protein is Hemp protein. It is rich in Omega-3 and several amino acids, although it does not contain all the essential amino acids, found in other proteins, which are important in repairing and aiding muscle growth.

Some Body Whey Protein

Life has many ups and downs and they’re called squats! If you’re a regular at the squat bar, know your way around a bench press or you’re no stranger to a weights rack, then you may already be familiar with whey protein.  Some Body’s Whey Protein range contains all 9 amino acids that the body needs (we do not naturally produce them) to build muscle, repair our bodies and to gain strength.

Hydrogel & Silicone Hydrogel Lenses – What’s the Difference?

Silicone Hydrogel lenses

Did you know that there are 2 types of daily disposable contact lenses? No, you may not have even thought about it, but here are some facts about Hydrogel and Silicone Hydrogel – in case you ever have to decide between the two.

A Quick Timeline of Contact Lenses…

The idea of a contact lens has been around since the days of Leonardo da Vinci, but the ones that we all know (and potentially wear) are from the 1950s and 60s onwards.

As with everything, time goes on and things develop, and this is the same for contact lenses.

1960s: Hydrogel lenses were first made

1980s: Disposable lenses were released

1990s onwards: Silicone Hydrogel lenses began being manufactured.

Cropped shot of a beautiful young woman putting in her contact lenses at home

What Are the Different Benefits?

Silicone Hydrogel Lenses

So, given that Silicone Hydrogel lenses are newer they are better, right? Well, we can’t deny the benefits of them that’s for sure!

Silicone Hydrogel lenses allow more oxygen to reach your eye than hydrogel lenses, up to 5 times more in fact! Which means extra comfort, longer wearing time and better eye health.

If the corneas in your eyes don’t get enough oxygen, they can become uncomfortable, red, swollen and you could have blurred vision, and this can all lead to developing a nasty eye infection. Silicone Hydrogel can minimise this risk and they are the most commonly prescribed soft contact lens in the UK now.

Silicone Hydrogel are now available in many more powers and base curves, so the fit can be more comfortable than earlier Silicone Hydrogel lenses, so there is no reason to not try them.

But before you all go rushing out to your opticians and ask to be fitted with a Silicone Hydrogel lens, remember, your opticians will have fitted you with the best contact lens for your eye.

Hydrogel Lenses

It is not all doom and gloom when it comes to Hydrogel lenses though. For some wearers, the Hydrogel lenses have a better wettability than some Silicone Hydrogel and of course there is the pricing too.

Hydrogel lenses are cheaper than the Silicone Hydrogel lenses – but who can put a price on the health of their eyes?!

Getting Your Lenses from Superdrug

If you are still intrigued and want to try a Silicone Hydrogel lens, why not on your next contact lens aftercare appointment ask for more information on lenses such as Acuvue Oasys 1 day or Dailies Total1 contact lenses?

And remember you can always pick up your branded daily disposable contact lenses (Hydrogel or Silicone Hydrogel) from Superdrug along with all your health and beauty favs too.

How to Look After Your Eyes No Matter the Season

Two females eating ice cream and wearing glasses on a sunny day

As the seasons change, we make a conscious effort to ensure our bodies are well looked after. In the winter we protect ourselves from colds and flu, in the summer its sunburn and in the spring it’s hay fever.  But how much time do you spend thinking about your eye care as the seasons change? Just like our bodies, our eyes have changing needs, so here is a bit of info, and a few tips, for how to look after our eyes no matter what season it is...

The harsh winter weather, along with central heating at home, can cause our skin and eyes to become dry. And let’s not forget the winter sun - UV rays can still affect your eyes, especially in the snow. So, here are our top tips on ensuring your eyes are protected in the colder months:

  • Drink plenty of fluids and use a humidifier to increase moisture in the air
  • Use eye drops if you need to (use contact-friendly ones if you wear lenses)
  • Wear sunglasses when out in the sun… yes, even in winter!
  • Take extra precautions when changing your contact lenses – especially during the dreaded cold or flu season. Always wash your hands to prevent germs spreading and if your eyes become affected by the virus it could be a good idea to give your eyes a break from contacts and reach for the specs.

With the start of spring, comes dreaded hay fever – although, we are a big fan of daffodils and blossoms appearing on the trees, so it’s not all bad!

We could go on for hours about eye health in spring with hay fever, but the main message is: -

  • Cover up with sunglasses, especially wrap around styles
  • Try to avoid going out when the pollen level is high, check the pollen levels on the weather reports or internet and avoid the peak times of day (mid-morning and early evening)
  • Avoid the pollen itself by not being in direct contact with it.
  • Use hay fever eye drops and eye sprays or take antihistamines if needed
  • Try daily disposable contact lenses – Speak to your optician for further details, but a fresh pair of contacts each day will prevent pollen build up
  • And of course – give your eyes a break and wear your glasses

Summertime – the season that most of us wait patiently for all year! Festivals, holidays and the glorious sunshine (we hope) - there’s so many reasons to be outside. But just like the other seasons there are certain things to consider with regards to our eye health needs that come with the arrival of the season of sun.

  • Thanks to pesky grass pollen, you can still suffer with hay fever.
  • Stay hydrated to prevent dry eyes especially when it is warm outside & the air con is on at work. Use eye drops if needed.
  • Protect your eyes from the UV rays by wearing sunglasses that block 100% UVA and UVB rays.

Glasses Online Top Tip:

Contact Lenses and swimming don’t mix! So, be sure to wear your prescription goggles when taking a dip in either the pool or ocean. And on the subject of catching rays, be careful with the sunscreen. Avoid getting it in your eyes, especially when wearing contacts, but make sure to cover up to avoid sunburn. Don’t forget your eyelids!

When autumn arrives, we love nothing more than wrapping up and getting outside to enjoy the ever-changing colours of nature or curling up on the sofa, with a good book and a blanket.

You’re going to need your eyes to be in good health to enjoy everything this season has to offer, so here is what you should consider:

  • Dry eyes strike again! The changes in the weather can again cause this issue with your eyes.
  • As the nights start to draw in, weed pollen and mould spores can affect some of us causing hay fever symptoms.
  • If you’re thinking of giving contact lenses a try, autumn is a great time of year, especially for outdoor fanatics. No matter what activity you are doing, or whatever the weather, you won’t be restricted by glasses. No more fogging up or being bothered by the rain. Plus, you can wear your favourite sunglasses as well to protect you from UV rays.

So, no matter what the season, make sure to look after your eyes. From hay fever to dry eyes to UV rays too, we here at Superdrug can look after all these by heading to Superdrug Glasses Online for your specs and sunnies, as well as your disposable contact lenses  and Superdrug Health for those hay fever remedies and eye drops!

BB Cream or CC Cream: Which One Should I Get?

Model on a brown background with glowing skin for BB or CC cream article

Everyone seems to be talking about BB creams and CC creams these days – but what actually are they and how are they different each other as well as other face makeup? Read on and find out if you are a BB or CC cream kind of person.

Why Should I consider Going for a BB Cream or CC Cream?

If you like cosmetics that are multifunctional BB, CC and DD creams could really work for you as they are part moisturiser, part makeup and even part primer. This means that they won’t only nourish your skin, they will also provide coverage - hurrah for double duty! It’s worth adding that the coverage in BB, CC and DD creams won’t be as opaque as in foundation or powder. Having said that, these products are perfect for days when you are keen on lighter coverage than foundation, and you are not fond of the idea of going bare faced either.

What is a Tinted Moisturiser?

A tinted moisturiser plays a big role in the category of makeup-meets-skincare as it is the forefather of BB, CC and DD creams. If you are keen on a subtle tint with little to no coverage and all of the benefits your regular day cream provides, go for a tinted moisturiser.

What’s the Difference Between BB, CC & DD Creams?

All You Need to Know About BB Cream

BB stands for “beauty balm”. A BB cream is a tinted moisturiser injected with a bit more coverage and further benefits, for example priming properties, SPF filters and sometimes even a wrinkle reduction effect. This means that when you are in a hurry, you can skip a few beauty steps and get away with using just a beauty balm.

But don’t throw away half of your face makeup bag just yet! As this product is all about light coverage, the effect it’s going to have won’t be as intense as that of a moisturiser, serum or SPF cream – so look at your new BB cream like an addition to your makeup collection, rather than an alternative to some of your tried and tested favourites.

All You Need to Know About CC Cream

CC stands for “colour correcting” or “complexion correcting”. This product has a bit more coverage than the BB cream while still remaining lighter than foundation. CC creams will work better for those with sallow skin or age spots than BB creams. This is because BB creams focus more on prevention and maintenance, while CC creams prime and conceal problem skin as well as colour correct areas that you are not happy with. It’s also worth saying that CC creams are much lighter in texture and less oily than BB creams.

All You Need to Know About DD Cream

DD stands for “daily defense”. This product is designed to do it all - prime, perfect and protect your skin instantly and over time. It even has added anti-ageing properties which make it perfect for you if your skin is slightly on the mature side. It does this by helping reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time. DD creams are to be worn over your moisturiser - not as a product instead of. Rather than covering up your skin, they have a sheer coverage that evens everything out. DD creams are also great for defending your skin against environmental factors like pollution.

Quick Fire Questions: BB Cream or CC Cream?

Oily skin: CC. It is less oily and lighter than the BB cream.

Redness: CC. It will correct your tone in no time.

Sensitive skin: Both can work wonders. Shop around and go for a BB or CC cream that complements your skin tone the most.

Anti-Ageing: Both BB or CC can come to the rescue. However, don’t be tempted to use them as an alternative to a great anti-ageing skincare routine.

Healthy Glow: BB. It will enhance your complexion and let your natural skin shine.

Blemish-prone skin: BB. It focuses on prevention of blemishes.

Skin with blemishes: CC. It will help you conceal problem areas.

5 Mascara Tips For Short Lashes

Young pretty female with white shirt on a white background

If you want to achieve flutter-ready lashes but feel you haven’t got the length to pull it off, there are many ways to enhance your natural beauty. But before you head straight for extensions and falsies, ask yourself this. Are you getting the most out of your trusty mascara? Because with our tips and tricks, a wave of the magic wand can be all you need...

Young female holding mascara close to her face and in her mouth

1. Master the Technique

The way you apply mascara makes a big difference to the final look. For example, if you’re coating lashes repeatedly then you’ll end up with infamous spider eyes - not something to aim for! Instead, one of the best ways to ensure you coat every lash evenly is to move the wand in a zig-zag motion from the root of the lash to the tip. Also, always coat both sides of the lashes as this will create a thickening effect.

In addition to the application technique, there’s also a right and wrong way of taking mascara out of its packaging. You should always twirl the mascara wand before removing it from the tube – never pump it, as this can a cause dreaded clumping.

2. Brush through Lashes

To make the most out of your natural lashes, always brush through them before applying mascara. This helps spread them out and will ensure the wand coats every single hair for a more dramatic, defined look.

3. Bend the Wand

If you find your application is a little on the shaky side, then bend your mascara wand at a right angle for added ease and control. It can also make it easier to coat those hard-to-reach lashes too, particularly under the eye and in the corners.

Young female holding eye lash curlers to her face

4. Heat Eyelash Curlers

For those with short/straight lashes, a couple of pumps with an eyelash curler is an absolute must-do before applying mascara. To get more from this beauty tool simply add heat with a hairdryer before use. You only need to do this a few seconds because you want it to be a little warm and never scorching, so always test the heat on the back of your hand before lining up to your eye. Leave it to cool until you’re comfortable that it's safe to put near your delicate eye area.

5. De-clump the Wand

Unwrapped a brand new mascara and can’t wait to test it out? Odds are the first few applications may look a little on the clumpy side due to excess product on the wand. Simply glide the brush over a tissue before applying to stop any extra residue transferring to your lashes.

If you have the opposite problem and are trying to lengthen the life of an older mascara, then simply place it in a glass of lukewarm water before use – a quick and easy beauty fix!

Our Favourite Moisturisers for Men

Male holding the B. Moisturiser Tin for men

Guys, did you know that this time of year you need to give your skin some extra love, care and attention? Chillier temperatures, indoor heating and the party season all contribute to dry and lacklustre looking skin. It’s time to treat our thirsty skin with products that increase the moisture level and leave your skin soft and healthy.

But First, Do Men Need Different Skincare to Women?

You may be wondering… can’t I just use my partners/sisters/flatmates moisturiser etc? Yes, you absolutely can (but ask her first, obvs!) however, there are some differences between male and female skin to consider.  Male skin tends to be about 20% thicker than women, as it has more collagen and elastin. Male skin also contains more hair follicles – which can lead to an oiler complexion. Then there’s shaving! Regular shaving can lead to skin irritation, which can be provoked by added fragrance often found in women’s skincare. So, where some skincare is absolutely universal, some will also cater closer to male skin.

So, guys, if you want your own space on the bathroom shelf with your own little arsenal of skincare products… check out some of our faves below.
