Halloween Tutorial: Beauty and The Bug

Halloween tutorial beauty and the bug

Look freaky yet fabulous with this creepy, crawling spider look. The best thing about this look? It takes next to no time to create and we’re pretty sure you’ll have everything to do it already! You’re just a couple of flicks away from creating a look that will give people the chills.

How To Get Your Scare On:

Step 1

Prep your skin as you usually would when you're getting ready for a night out to start this look. We're using the B. Flawless Foundation.

Step 2

Next step is to create a simple smokey eye using B. Pro Longwear Gel Eyeliner in Black as a base and draw all over the lid. Smoke this out with a brush or your finger and set with a matte black eyeshadow. Take your smokey eye to another level by lining your eye with the B. Kohl Eyeliner.

Step 3

A quick and efficient way to blend out a smokey eye is by using bronzer. We're using the B. Matte Darker Bronzer to exaggerate towards the end of the brow. Go back in with the B. Gel Eyeliner under neath the eye and blend across the waterline.

Step 4

Using the B. Volumizing Mascara, give your lashes a generous coat on both the top and lower lashes to achieve fun, full lashes.

Step 5

For even fuller looking lash, and to give your eyes some added drama, go in with the faux lashes. We love the Superdrug False Lash Natural Edition.

Step 6

Before we get to the bugs, it's time to finish of the base of the look with your lips. B. Lip Liner in Plum is perfect and fill in your lips with B. Matte Lipstick in Mulberry Smootch.

Step 7

Now for the creepy crawlies! Use the B. Pro Duo Eyeliner in Black or B.Pro Longwear Gel Liner in Black. Taking a small brush, draw an oval shape for each of the bugs and add three ‘C’ shape legs to each side of the oval.

Step 8

Drawing the bugs on just one side of your face has the most impact - but feel free to cover your face or both sides from the eyes if you wish! Alternate the sizes of your oval bugs and fill in any large gaps with dots. Want the creepy crawlies to last all night long? A few sprays of B. Makeup Setting Spray will make sure they hang around…

How to Get Rid of Blackheads

Close up of female with blackhead pore cleansing strip on her nose

Blackheads breakouts … you are not welcome here! Unfortunately, we cannot banish blackheads forever, but we can help you to manage them.  Follow our expert advice and try these at-home blackhead removal tips for a clearer looking complexion.

What Are Blackheads & How Are They Caused?

In order to treat something, it’s best to understand what causes them. So, here’s a quick lesson on what causes blackheads…

Blackheads are caused when a combination of naturally occurring oil (or sebum) and dead skin cells clog your hair follicle. As the skin attempts to secrete and shed sebum and dead cells, the bacteria come into contact with oxygen at the opening of the pore, which then turns black.

How Are Blackheads Different to Whiteheads?

With blackheads, the pore remains open. Whereas with a white head, the pore is closed. Simple!

How to get rid of blackheads

Blackhead Removal Tips

1. Exfoliate your skin

By exfoliating your skin with a face scrub, you are effectively removing the top layer of dead skin cells, dirt and makeup which can block your pores.

Remember to be gentle on your skin when exfoliating so you don’t push what’s clogging your pores further into your skin, causing further inflammation. If you have blemish or acne prone skin, exfoliating just once a week should be enough.

2. Try using a chemical peel

Another super effective way of exfoliating your skin is by applying a chemical peel. Don’t be put off by the term ‘chemical’, we’re talking about your lactic, glycolic and salicylic acids.

Your AHAs (alpha-hydroxy-acids) are brilliant for treating blackheads, so that’s your glycolic and your lactic acids. Then your BHAs (beta-hydroxy-acids), such as salicylic acid, dissolve the layer of dead skin cells and unblock your pores.

Although these are very beneficial for your skin, avoid keeping formulas on for too long and if you notice any flaking, give your skin a break.

3. Draw out toxins with clay

Adding a facemask into your skincare routine is not just for the relaxation benefits it brings. Using a clay mask once a week will help draw out the impurities in your pores.  It’s so effective you should actually be able to see excess sebum as it surfaces on the clay.

4. Use oil-free products

One of the causes of blackheads is excess oil, so if you’re suffering from blackheads it’s best to incorporate oil-free or noncomedogenic makeup and skincare products in your regime.

5. Try retinol & retinoids

Usually associated with anti-ageing, retinol products and retinoids are also recognised by dermatologists for removing blackheads. Without over-stripping, these products keep skin cells turning over and replenishing efficiently.

6. Don’t skip out on the moisturiser

If you’re undergoing deep exfoliation and cleansing treatments in a bid to banish blackheads, it’s likely all the oil-stripping methods will dry out the skin. But, it’s vital to keep the balance right and provide nourishment with the help of a moisturiser. If you’re worried about adding oil, always opt for a non-comedogenic moisturiser.

The Blackhead-Busting Routine

Wash your face twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, with an oil-free cleanser that’s formulated to target blackheads.

Use a face scrub twice a week to remove dead skin cells and opt for one that contains lactic acid to help absorb excess oil.

Treat your skin to a detoxifying facemask once a week to cleanse the skin of dirt and bacteria thoroughly. Clay masks stimulate the blood flow and draw out impurities – you’ll be able to see excess sebum as it surfaces on the clay.

Removing Blackheads With Pore Strips

Pore strips can help you remove blackheads with one quick movement - and some people find them ridiculously satisfying to use!

Start by washing your face with a deep-cleansing electronic face brush to loosen any sebum and dead skin cells that might be blocking pores. Then wet your nose (the strip won’t stick otherwise) and apply the strip, smoothing it down as you go and making sure there are no lumps. Once the strip has dried, slowly peel it off, starting at the edges.

Close up of female with blackhead pore cleansing strip on her nose

Should you squeeze blackheads?

We know how tempting it is to squeeze blackheads, but it’s important not to squeeze every single one you see. Remember that squeezing can increase the risk of scarring!

Focus on the oldest blackheads – they tend to be darker in colour and will be easier to remove. If you try to squeeze newer blackheads, you risk damaging the pore walls, which allows the bacteria to spread to the surrounding tissue and cause spots to form.

Start the process by holding your head over a bowl of hot water or having a hot shower – the steam helps to soften the pores. Then wrap a tissue around the fingers you’ll be squeezing with, to help stop the bacteria spreading, and gently push down on either side of the blackhead, slowly moving your fingers around so you’re not constantly putting pressure on the same area of skin.

The blackhead should come out fairly easily; if it doesn’t, leave it for another day. Once you’re finished, apply a clay mask to the affected area to help reduce the inflammation.

Book in for a facial extraction

If you are not comfortable trying to remove black heads yourself, if blackheads are a reoccurring problem and you need professional help, book an appointment with an expert.

They will steam your skin to loosen the oil in your pores and they will use a blackhead extractor tool to physically squeeze them out.

Caring for Your Skin from Your 20s to Your 50s

Mixed group of females of different ages

As we get older, our skin ages with us. Many people will have started to think about a skincare routine in their teens, when spots seem like the worst thing in the world, but most would not have established a proper process until their 20s or maybe even their 30s.

As we grow, our skin will develop different kinds of concerns, so we need to adapt the products and ingredients that we use. If a big birthday is looming, or you’re starting to see a change in your skin – then read on to find our some of the most important products and ingredients to have your bathroom shelf in your 20s, 30s, 40s and your 50s and beyond.

Protect Your Skin in Your 20s

You’re leaving your teens years' behind you and are starting to take the world on, and with it, you want healthy radiant looking skin.  Your 20s are a great time to establish a really reliable skincare routine and by this we mean consistently cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturising.  If you take good care of your skin now, you’ll thank your younger self for it later in life!

Things to Remember in Your 20s

As you won’t have too many fine lines in your 20s, and collagen production is still keeping your complexion looking fresh and plump, take these years to ensure you are protecting your skin. Always take your makeup off before you go to bed, apply an SPF every single day (yes, even when the sun isn’t out), help keep breakouts at bay by using ingredients such as salicylic acid to help encourage healthy cell turnover and drink plenty of water.

For a soft and supple complexion that protects your skin, add the B. Confident Night Serum to your skincare arsenal.

Keep Your Skin Hydrated in Your 30s

Goodbye 20s, you were fun! Say hello to your self-assured 30s! As you enter your 30s you may be faced with more responsibilities, further stress at work and let’s not forget the endless weddings and baby showers! So, the last thing you need to be fretting about is how your skin looks!

In your 30s your skin may start to show signs of ageing, collagen production will start to decrease causing the elasticity in your skin to reduce - so the main aim for your skin is to keep it toned and well-hydrated.  Don’t over complicate your routine and be kind to your skin.

Fight Premature Ageing

Start your routine with a thorough cleanse. Stay away from foaming cleansers as this can dry out your complexion, instead opt for a cream or oil cleanse that is packed with antioxidants to help fight the signs of premature ageing. Try the Superdrug Naturally Radiant Hot Cloth Cleanser to effectively remove makeup and daily grime without drying out your skin.

Add Hydration with Hyaluronic Acid

As collagen production starts to decrease in your skin, it will need extra hydration to keep your complexion looking radiant and hydrated. Products containing hyaluronic acid, such as the B. Radiant Day Cream, will become your new skincare saviour to give your skin the moisture boost it craves.

Boost Skin Renewal with Retinol

As you move through your 30s and head towards the next stage of your life, your skin will need help keeping its strength and structure. Using a retinol-based product, a form of vitamin A, increases collagen and boosts your skins cell renewal. Be sure to also apply to your neck and décolletage as early signs of ageing can be quite prominent in these areas.  Try the Revolution Skincare Skin Tone Correcting Serum to encourage natural cell turnover.

Feeling Fabulous in Your 40s

In your 40s, you will now be seeing more visible signs of ageing and your skincare routine will take another change in direction.  This period in your life is all about keeping your skin as healthy as possible by further boosting collagen and elastin production, locking in extra moisture and protecting your skin with antioxidants.

Exfoliate for radiant skin

Skin cell turnover drastically reduces in your 40s, which means you will need to exfoliate more than you did when you were younger.  A gentle exfoliation will not only rid your skin of dead skin cells, but it will give your skin a radiant boost that it may be lacking. Use a chemical exfoliator or peel with AHAs such, as lactic acid, to give you your glow back.  Give the Superdrug Naturally Radiant Glycolic Overnight Peel a go so it can get to work while you catch up on Zzz's...

Invest in a Serum

Serums have a lightweight formula and are designed to penetrate your skin further and deeper to repair and hydrate your skin.  Help replenish your skins natural barrier and stimulate collagen with  serum packed with antioxidant and peptides such as the B. Restored Peptide Rich Serum.

Loving Your Skin in Your 50s and Beyond

With age, comes wisdom - or so they say! So, by now, you should know plenty about what your skin needs and loves.  There’s no denying your skin will have gone through lots of changes, so although you cannot turn back the clock, you can adapt your skincare routine to minimise the toll aging takes on your skin.

Rejuvenate with a Night Cream

Although you may have been using a night cream from a younger age, it is vital to give your skin a much-needed moisture boost now. Rich and creamy moisturisers, such as the Superdrug Vitamin E Night Cream, will leave your skin feeling softer and more supple when you wake in the morning and products containing Niacinamide will help your skins moisture barrier.

Target fine lines around your eyes

Fine lines, wrinkles and crows’ feet can be more apparent around the eyes. As these appear, or become more defined, use a moisture-rich eye cream to plump, smooth and reduce their appearance. We love the B. Nourished Eye Cream for effective results.

Which Face Cleanser Should I Choose?

Group shot of B. by Superdrug micellar water and cleansers on a pink and blue background

There are two types of skincare peeps. The ones who are happy with a flick of a face wipe and a swipe of moisturiser. And there are the ones who think the Korean 10-step cleansing guide just isn't quite thorough enough!

No matter where you sit on the face cleaning scale, one thing is for sure - you should be cleansing your face every single day!

The skincare aisle is bursting with different types of cleansers, so if you're not sure where to start we're here to help by separating the foams from the gels and the wipes from the balms.

But first... are you using the right cleanser for your skin type?

Group shot of B. by Superdrug clesnsers

What Skin Type Do I Have?

To choose the right products for your skin you need to know the type of skin you have. If you’re unsure, see if your skin falls into any of these common categories below:

Combination Skin

Combination skin can fluctuate between feeling dry and oily. You may also find you have a shiny T-Zone, are prone to blackheads and areas of dryness from time to time.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is lacking in oil (not to be confused with lacking in water, which makes the skin dehydrated). You may feel tightness in your skin after showering or washing your face and red or flaky patches is common for you.

Sensitive Skin

If your skin is easily irritated, itches or has rashes - then you could have sensitive skin. This skin type can be easily aggravated by the weather, hormones, stress, diet and beauty products.

Normal Skin

Those lucky few with a normal skin type will find they have a healthy oil balance, a clear complexion, even skin tone and a radiant glow to their complexion.

Choosing a Cleanser for Your Skin Type

There are quite a few options out there on the market, so we’re going to go straight in with your main choices…

Gel Cleanser

Suitable for: normal, combination or oily skin that is prone to redness.

Go for a gel cleanser if you like a lightweight option that hydrates the skin. A quality gel cleanser will easily remove traces of make up and leave your skin feeling fresh.

Light Foaming Cleanser

Suitable for: Combination or oil skin that can be sensitive to breakouts.

If you want to thoroughly cleanse your skin, without the product feeling too heavy, then try a light foaming cleanser. Choose one that is free from added fragrance and is gentle on your skin.

Simple Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Gel Wash 150ml £1.85 Buy Now

Oil-Based Cleanser

Suitable for: all skin types.

An oil-based cleanser is ideal if you need to remove heavier makeup or if you double cleanse every evening. Use your oil-based cleanser first, then follow up with a gel, cream or lotion. This type of cleanser will also leave your skin feeling soft and smooth.

Micellar/ Water-Based Makeup Remover

Suitable for: all skin types.

Use micellar water on a cotton pad to remove surface traces of makeup and dirt. Follow up with a second cleanse using a richer cleanser to ensure there is no makeup left on your skin.

Cleansing Balm

Suitable for: normal, very dry and sensitive skin.

This type of cleanser will deeply nourish your skin leaving it feeling soft and moisturised. Apply to your skin in circular motions and remove gently with a soft, wet wash cloth. It is not advised to use this cleanser if you have oily or acne prone skin.

Cream and Lotions Cleanser

Suitable for: normal, dry and sensitive skin.

If you like your skin to feel moisturised while you are cleaning it, then this is the cleanser for you. The silky texture removes most traces of makeup, but you may need to double cleanse if you wear waterproof products.

Face Wipes

Suitable: for all skins types (most face wipes will be formulated for certain skin types, so always check the packet)

Whether you love them or hate them, face wipes do come in handy from time to time! They are great if you are on the go, to use at the gym or you need a quick surface cleanse without the use of water - but they shouldn't replace a regular cleansing routine!

Superdrug Superdrug Essential Cleansing Face Wipes - Fragrance Free £0.99 Buy Now
B. Skincare B. Pure Sensitive Micellar Cleansing Wipes £1.49 Buy Now

Do I Need to Double Cleanse?

Ideally, yes! Double cleansing isn’t a myth – it really is beneficial for your skin. You can use the same cleanser twice to ensure you really have removed all traces of makeup and grime, but you may want to mix up your options.

The first cleanse should remove surface dirt and light makeup. You may want to use a micellar water or cleansing water for this step.

The second cleanse is a much deeper, more thorough clean which you will want to get deeper into the skin to cleanse, sooth and remove heavier application of makeup. Consider a foaming, gel, cream or lotion cleanser for this step.
