How to: Colour-block party makeup

@amyrosewalker showing off colour-block eye makeup

Don’t get us wrong, we love a good smoky eye, but sometimes you just want a pop of brightness in your Christmas makeup… right? The hype around colour blocking isn’t going anywhere any time soon, so we asked Amy-Rose Walker (@amyrosewalker) to tailor the trend to the party season. Both bright and warm, this look is giving us seriously glam vibes and will be perfect for any Christmas or New Year’s Eve party.

Start subtle

Lay the Running Late shade from the Makeup Revolution x Soph Eyeshadow Palette in Extra Spice in the eye crease and blend it up towards your brow bone. Simply blend through the crease with a fluffy brush, building up the pigment with layers of shadow until you’re happy with the intensity.

Revolution Makeup RevolutionxSoph Extra Spice Eye Shadow Palette £10.00 Buy Now

Add more intensity with the Sweet and Sour shade from the same palette. Focus the colour in the crease to get that perfectly blended depth.

Time for a pop

Now for something brighter – strawberry-toned red, anyone?! Apply the Twenty-One shade to your eyelid and blend up towards your crease, working with the shadow until you’ve got a seamless finish.

Ray of sunshine

It may be winter, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use sunshine yellow. Blend the shade Vitamin C along your lower lash line using a damp brush to make the pigment pop.

Line and define

Define your upper lash line with a swoop of MUA Eye Define Felt Liner and apply a lick of Maybelline Colossal Volum’Express Mascara to your lashes.

How to take care of your skin when run down

Woman smiling in snowy winter background in hat applying moisturiser

Winter days have a nasty habit of taking their toll on our health. If you’ve come down with a serious case of the sniffles and are feeling under the weather, it’s very likely your skin is suffering too! From a dried-out complexion to a sore red nose, this season can really do a number on your skin. If you’re currently rocking a more run down than runway look right now, our top tips are here to save your skin from those winter woes.

Woman smiling in snowy winter background in hat applying moisturiser

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

When you're lacking energy and feeling run down, it’s quite easy for your usual skincare regime to go out the window but its important to keep replenishing your skin; especially around the nose where constant contact with a tissue may have left it red and sore. Not a good look!  Remember to moisturise morning and night, plus any time you can in-between to replace the moisture zapped out by the dry winter air.

Show your skin some TLC

Be gentle on your skin, it’s suffering enough already! Swap any abrasive exfoliates or cleansers from your routine for a gentler version. Try chemical exfoliates (don’t let the name put you off - it’s a friendly ingredient!) with AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) which gently dissolve the dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin instead of scrubbing them off, so you can say hello to happy, healthy skin once again!

Sleep on it

The idea of ‘beauty sleep’ really isn’t a myth; our skin does some of its best work while we’re enjoying forty winks! It’s rejuvenating, restoring and repairing all while we dream so it’s important to get those recommended 8 hours a night.

Woman in pyjamas sleeping in eye-mask

Top skin loving ingredients you MUST try

  • Let’s start with ceramides. These are lipids that help form the skin’s barrier and retain its moisture. So, super important at this time of year.
  • Jojoba oil is your go-to friend to resolve irritated, dry skin. It’s really gentle and can be used on even the most sensitive of skin. A few drops can keep you moisturised for hours - hooray!
  • The powerhouse of moisturising agents, say hello and add hyaluronic acid to your regime, like, now!
  • The product that can do no wrong! Coconut oil works wonders on every part of your body from your hair to your finger nails, but it’s especially fantastic at restoring your dried, winter skin back to it’s former glory!

Iron rich foods to add to your diet

Woman in ripped jeans eating bowl of green vegetables

Are you getting enough iron in your diet? If you’re feeling overly tired, weak, short of breath or suffer from a paler than pale complexion (and you haven't been burning the candles at both ends) - the answer could be no.  If you want to take a step towards living your healthiest ever life (you go, girl!) read on to find out why iron is so important for your health and which foods you should be adding to your shopping basket.

Bowls full of iron rich grains, nuts and pulses

Why do our bodies need iron?

We hope you’re paying attention, as we have a quick science lesson for you (don’t worry, there won’t be an exam at the end!). Our body uses the iron we intake to make haemoglobins in red blood cells. These red blood cells then carry oxygen through the body from our lungs to muscles and other important organs.  So, we think you’d agree, it’s quite an important nutrient!

Pregnant women, ladies who have heavy periods and children are particularly susceptible to being low on iron. So, how can you improve your diet to ensure your iron reserves are topped up?

Tuck into these iron rich foods

Luckily for us, iron can be found in lots of everyday foods - so you don’t need to be scouring the aisles in your local health food store for anything too obscure! There are two types of iron which can be found in foods; haem iron and non-haem iron.

Organic rainbow chard in a fan on a dark wooden background

Haem irons: animal protein

  • Red meats – such as lamb and liver (although if you are pregnant you should avoid eating liver)
  • Chicken
  • Fish

 Non-haem irons: plant-based foods

  • Green leafy veggies such as kale and spinach
  • Lentils and beans
  • Grains such as whole wheat, brown rice and fortified breakfast cereals.

And finally, to increase your chances of iron being absorbed into your body, combine it with vitamin C rich sources such as drinking orange juice or taking a vitamin C supplement with your meal.

Here's to looking and feeling your best!

How to: glitter-star party-season makeup look

Meather Moorhouse (@makeupmouse) showcasing glitter-star christmas makeup

You’ve seen our holographic makeup look, but we thought we’d take it a step further for an even more out-of-this-world look. Heather Moorhouse from @makeupmouse joins us to bring you this awesome glitter-star makeup look – perfect for any New Year’s Eve party, and a great one to customise to your own tastes. We’ve gone for purple and pink tones, but you can use any colours you want and make the look your own. Here’s how we did it…

Lay down the base

Although you’re gonna be transforming one eye into a bright shining star, you want to lay down the base of this look on both eyes. Apply a bright shimmery purple shade from the MUA Eyeshadow Palette in Tropical Oceana to your lids and blend out at the crease. Then, taking a darker matte purple shade from the same palette, smoke out your lower lash line and blend into the bright purple at the outer corner.

Brand Description of the Product Price Buy Now

Make a star-t

Let the fun begin! Take some matte purple shadow from the same palette on a skinny angled brush and draw the outline of a star over one of your eyes – we recommend picking your good side (wink wink). Take your time with this and feel free to erase as many times as you need to get it perfect.

Revolution Pro Revolution Pro 160 Angled Flat Brush £6.00 Buy Now

Fill it in

Use the darker matte purple on a stiff pointed brush to fill in the star, then use a bright pink shade from the Tropical Oceana palette in the middle of the star. Try to fade these colours into each other if you can… but we’re going to cover it all with glitter, so it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Add definition

Before you go in with the sparkly stuff, use GOSH Giant Pro Double Liner in Black on your waterline and to create a wing on your upper lash line. This will give your eyes oomph. Then use MUA Amplify Mascara in Black to coat and fan out your lashes. Feel free to add falsies for some more drama, if you like.

Shine bright

It’s time to grab your glitter… finally! Use Collection Glam Crystals Glitter Glue to secure your sparkle. Apply this on top of the shadows and allow it to become tacky, then pack on Collection Glam Crystals Face & Body Glitter in Royal Diva to the points of the star and blend into Collection Glam Crystals Face & Body Glitter in Temptation as you get to the centre.

TOP TIP: Work in sections to make sure the glue doesn’t dry before you apply the glitter.

We love this look, but we wanted more. If you’re a massive glitter fan as well, apply a chunkier product, like Barry M Pick ‘n’ Glitz Glitter in Boo, to the points of your star for more dimension and texture.

Just Landed: B. Boosters

B boosters

Winter weather sending your skin into a spin? With the cold drying up all our radiance, it’s vital that we up the ante in our skincare routines, and the best way to do it is with high concentrations of active ingredients. Enter B. Hydrated and B. Glowing Boosters. Based on the Korean trend of using ‘ampoules’ as and when your skin needs extra support, these little bottles of skin luvvin’ are gonna seriously solve your face’s winter blues.

B boosters

Boost your beauty routine

On winter skincare, Meg Potter, Superdrug’s Head of Beauty, says, ‘At this time of year, we all want to give our skin a little boost. But you don’t have to buy a whole new routine.’ That’s where B. Boosters come in. You can use them on their own by smoothing over cleansed skin, morning and night, or try add a few drops and mixing with your favourite moisturiser before application. Both boosters contain highly concentrated levels of active ingredients, which, when added to your skincare routine, give it... well – a boost! Here’s how they work…

B. Hydrated Booster

Using the hydrating power of hyaluronic should really be a no-brainer in the winter months. The combination of cold weather and toasty warm central heating can really dry out your skin, but this humectant can solve all those woes and it’s found in abundance in this booster. Along with a nourishing blend of three Australian super-fruits, this winter skin must-have will also soften and freshen up your skin. In fact, after just one week’s use, 79% of testers agreed that their skin felt more hydrated, and 73% said their complexion looked fresher… we’ll take it!

B. Glowing Booster

A build-up of dead skin cells can result in your face looking less than its best – but dull skin is never a good look, and we’ll be chasing that summer hols radiance all winter if we have to. This booster is a blend of fruit acid from Australian limes and it’s gonna gently exfoliate your skin to reveal a newer, brighter-looking complexion. Sound too good to be true? It’s not – 76% of testers agreed that using this product left their skin looking more radiant after just two weeks. Win!

Wanna know the best bit? At the moment these little beauties are buy one get one free, so you can try both! Nifty, we know.
