How to trim your pubes for men

picture of man mowing grass taken from a birds eye view

Is your nether region getting a little too fleecy for your liking? If so it may be time to cut the grass. That’s right – we’re talking pube grooming. For a long time, this kinda haircare was women-only territory, but not any more. Sportsmen have actually been manscaping their manhood for ages – Lycra, sweat and a hairy downstairs just don’t get on… trust us. However, we understand that taking a blade to your bat ’n’ balls can be, well, downright terrifying! That’s why we’ve pulled together the best products for the job and some tips and tricks that’ll keep your bits intact.

picture of man mowing grass taken from a birds eye view

Get a good look

Rule number one: don’t go anywhere near your short and curlies without making sure you’ve got both eyes on your downstairs. Have a Superdrug Double-sided Magnifying Mirror to hand so you can always see what you’re doing.

Trim

OK lads, time to tackle that main hunk of hair above his majesty. You’ll want to trim this when dry with a proper groomer – I see you with that old razor… put it down! Philips OneBlade Face + Body is specially designed for all-over grooming. Make sure you always use a guard for this step to avoid any nasty accidents and always trim in the direction of hair growth to avoid snagging.

Shave

De-fluffing your danglers is tricky business and means having to wield a razor near your walnuts, so I’m gonna refer you back to the first step – make sure you’ve got a mirror to hand! Again, you want to use a clean, fresh razor. Bacteria can build up around the testicles, so doubling up with your face razor is a massive no-no. Equally, if you have any accidents down there and nip a bit of skin, using a clean razor will mean you lower the risk of infection. Lather up with some sensitive shaving foam to avoid razor burn – Superdrug Men’s Grooming Shave Foam Sensitive is great because it contains both aloe vera and vitamin E, which help soothe and moisturise. Then get yourself a good-quality razor like the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Flex-Ball Razor and, again, shave in the direction of hair growth. Pull your skin taut to avoid snagging the sack and take your time.

Finish off

Once you’re satisfied with your shave, you need to get some moisturiser on the area to stop your skin getting irritated. Use something like E45 Cream – it absorbs quickly and will stop itching. Finish off with a sprinkle of Johnson’s Baby Powder to leave you feeling fresh, clean and dry.

Get the look: Rihanna

Model with Rihanna-inspired makeup

Rihanna is always killing the game with her makeup looks. Her dedication to glowing (and slaying) is truly inspirational, which is why everyone wants in on it. Luckily for you, we’ve devised a step-by-step routine which will leave you glowing like Riri in no time.

What do I need to replicate Riri?

Illuminating primer             Matte highlighter
Foundation                           Mascara
Blending sponge                  Highlighter
Illuminating concealer        Setting spray
Concealer brush                   Brows
Contour kit                            Lip liner
Contour brush                      Lip gloss
Eyeshadow                            Body glitter

Step 1: You need a good base

To make sure your look lasts a whole night on the dancefloor, prime your whole face. Use an illuminating primer to get you kick started towards a glow like Rihanna’s. When you’re sorted, apply foundation using a blending sponge in tapping motions. Get that airbrushed glow, girl.

Rihanna foundation

Step 2: What you feel can’t be concealed, but your skin can

Too busy living your best life to get your full 8 hours? Conceal dark circles using an illuminating concealer and a concealer brush. To get glowing, apply next to the centre of your forehead (above the in-between of your brows), along the bridge of your nose and the centre of your chin. Blend, blend, blend, blend, blend…

Rihanna concealer

Step 3: Sculpt it

Using a contour kit and brush, start defining your features. Trace your cheekbones from the line of your ears down to just below your cheekbone. Blend well. Then, apply contour along your hairline and blend downwards. We can’t stress the importance of blending enough. Blend like your life depends on it.

rihanna contour

Step 4: Killer eyes

Prime your eyes using concealer. Nextm apply a light nude eyeshadow over eyelids. Next up, cover your eyes in glitter with a shimmering gold Apply all over lids and blend well.

Ri’s never feared colour so you shouldn’t either. Add a pop or orange to the outer corner of your eyes and blend in. Then, dust the orange and gold shadows under your waterline. Finish with a touch of highlight on the inner corners of your eyes.

Hold on! We’re done with your shadow but not your eyes. For a quick intermission, now’s the perfect time to dust a matte highlight along your cheekbones, jawline, and forehead. Once done, it’s to coat your lashes (both top and bottom) with mascara.

Rihanna 9

Step 5: Shine bright like a diamond

It’s time to get strobing with another highlighter. This time, opt for a shimmery finish instead of matte. Brush the highlight along the tops of your cheekbones. Don’t be shy, use as much as you want – we’re aiming for diamonds here, people! Once satisfied, (using a lighter hand), brush highlight along your forehead, chin, and nose where you want to reflect light.

To make sure you stay like a diamond in the sky (sorry, can't stop won't stop) all night, remember to set your makeup. Spritz with a setting spray and prepare to dazzle them all.

Rihanna matte

Step 6: Brow goals

Rihanna’s brows have been on fleek ever since her 'Pon De Replay' days. She doesn’t go for heavy brow makeup though, so fill in your brows using light strokes with your preferred product. To get your brows as envious as Rihanna’s, dust a bit of highlight over your browbones. Simple, but brow-changing.

Rihanna highlight brow

Step 7: Liquid gold

Tom and Jerry, peanut butter and jelly, Rihanna and a bold lip…some things are just meant to be together. To pay proper homage Ri, you’ll need a creative lip. Start with a nude lip, slightly darker than your skin tone. Line your lips, but don’t fill them in. Then, it gets fun. Apply a generous amount of liquid gold (handily in the shape of lip gloss), and voila! You are reaching Rihanna levels of glow.

Next, it gets fun. Apply a generous amount of liquid gold (handily in the shape of lip gloss), and voila! You are reaching Rihanna levels of glow.

Rihanna lip liner

Step 8: Feeling so good, looking so sparkly

You’ve almost made it to a goddess glow that only Rihanna is capable of. There’s just one more step. Body glitter. Oh yeah. Body glitter is officially back. Don’t worry though, it’s a lot more glamorous than your previous attempts aged 13 (we’ve all been there). Rub body glitter over your shoulders and chest (or anywhere else you want it), and you’re officially a diamond.

And that's it! You're ready channel your inner Rihanna. Be bold, be brave, be fierce.

5 ways to use acai

acai bowl recipe

Our classmates, our exes, our neighbours, and even our nans(?!) are crazy about acai. Well, that’s what it seems like anyway. Everywhere we go we seem to be hit with purple-tinged breakfasts covered in edible flowers. You’ve heard vague talk about a superfood or something, but how can something be so pretty, so delish, and so good? Something seems shady…

First up, we’re here to reassure you that, nope, nothing is shady about acai.  It’s a South American super fruit loaded with anti-oxidants, vitamins, fibre, calcium, and omega.  With all of this healthy stuff packed into one fruit, it’s no wonder acai is reaching cult status.

Oh, and because the acai fruit is so tender, it’s mostly consumed as a mega convenient powder. The process is super pure, so no nasty bits are added, and all the goodness stays. Now you know what acai is, there’s no excuse not to give it a go. Try one of our simple yet moreish recipes..

Blank canvas

For the boldest look possible, you want to start with a completely clean slate. Colour shows up best against white, so if you want your lips to pop, laying down a base of the B. Kohl Eyeliner in White is a must. Start by lining your lips for precision, then fill them in.

Ready for the rainbow

Using rainbow colours from the Revolution Pro Regeneration Palette in Mischief Matte, start applying shadows in rainbow order (red, orange, yellow, green and blue). Pack on the colour with a flat eyeshadow brush, slightly overlapping the shades to ensure a seamless finish.

We’ve chosen to apply the colours in vertical lines across both lips, going from left to right, but you can really get creative here, so do whatever you like best!

Everything you need to know about face scrubs

Face scrubs are the backbone of every good skincare routine. Well, they were. Then a whole load of #fakenews got out and everyone got afraid of exfoliating. Trust us, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Face scrubs are the real deal. If you want the skin of your dreams, then you need one at the ready.

face scrubs asset

What are they?

Every time you step outside, your skin ends up collecting a layer of dirt. Gross.  If you’re happy to invite things like age spots, wrinkles, agitated, or dry skin into your life, then there’s no need for a face scrub. If not, you know what to do…

How do face scrubs work?

It’s simple. Face scrubs work by gently exfoliating the skin. Their superpowers include:

1. Banishing any dead skin cells that could make your skin appear dull (goodbye zombie bride, hello Chrissy Teigen glow).
2. Unblocking your pores for a supermodel complexion.
3. Removing any excess oil which could give you the dreaded shine.

What’s different about face scrubs now?

Raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten too keen with a face scrub (*raises hand*). One reason so many of us are exfoliating-phobes now is because we got too excited when we were younger. The problem is, exfoliating too much strips your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and open to breakouts. You should actually aim to use a face scrub every 2-3 days.

If you’re one of those who want to get their scrub on but find face scrubs too harsh on your skin (boo!) – don’t worry. Amid our skincare revolution, brands have been very busy creating softer face scrubs just for you. Result! These clever little beauties hold all the power of a regular face scrub, and they’re kinder to your skin. Dreams do come true.

Extra bonus: they’re environmentally friendly!

Whether you’re a level five vegan or just like dolphins a whole lot, you can still enjoy a good face scrub with a clear conscience. Contrary to popular belief, face scrubs do not harm the environment. Those pesky microbeads that made big news for their harm to our marine life have been banned in the UK. Face scrubs won’t contain them, meaning no animals will be harmed in the making of your flawless complexion.

5 most common foot problems

Foot problems can be a bit embarrassing. A lot of us are guilty of hoping they’ll go away without actually doing anything about them. Well, we’re here to tell you that most foot problems are super common and nothing to be ashamed of! Just think: either you pop to the shop and treat the problem in a day, or you leave it to manifest to barbaric extremes – leaving the doctors no choice but to amputate. Okay, we’re being a tad dramatic, but it is better to treat them!

Here’s a handy guide to the 5 most common foot problems and how to treat them…

Outdoor fashionable girl near street wall legs in red high heel shoes and short striped dress outdoor shot

Athlete’s foot

No, you don’t need to be a dedicated runner to get it. Athlete’s foot is a fungus infection which causes an inflamed rash on the skin. If that isn’t unpleasant enough, this can lead to peeling, itching, and even burning. To top it all off, athlete’s foot can also cause an, ahem, odour. Not goals.

Can I get rid of athlete's foot?

Yes - you don’t need to be stuck with athlete’s foot forever! An anti-fungal foot cream, gel, or spray should clear up symptoms within two weeks. If symptoms persist after that, you should seek medical advice. To avoid athlete’s foot altogether, remember it thrives in moist environments. Make sure you dry your feet properly and keep your socks clean!

Cracked heels

Well, there’s a reason your feet decide to dry up like the Sahara Desert just when you want to show them off. In the summer, we wear sandals and flip flops. No longer safe in your shoe, your heels are exposed to the harsh reality of the real world. This dries your skin up, which is problematic for the skin on your heel which is designed to be supple to support your movements. If stripped of moisture, your skin is going to crack under the pressure. If left untreated, cracked heels can get nasty infections. Yikes.

How do I smooth over cracked heels?

To avoid cracked heels altogether, make sure you moisturise your feet regularly. In the summer months, up your moisturising routine to twice-a-day if you wear sandals. If it’s too late, opt for a super nourishing foot cream and apply twice daily. If your heels are in need serious SOS treatment, opt for nourishing foot masks to repair and heal them. If your heels become infected or unbearable, seek professional help.

Verrucas

Verrucas are small, flat bumps that can be found on the soles of your feet. If you have trouble identifying them, it’s good to remember they usually have a visible blood vessel (giving them a dark circle in the centre). We do recommend you treat them otherwise you can spread the virus to other areas of your body, or even to others. No one wants that.

How do I banish verrucas?

Verrucas thrive in damp conditions. Those people you see wearing plastic bags on their feet at the pool? It's not for the love of quirky fashion - they don’t want veruccas. So, to avoid getting them, you could always wear said plastic bags (if that’s your thing). However, if you’ve already got one, salicylic acid is your secret weapon. It works by gently removing all layers of infected skin. Simply find an anti-verruca gel or plaster containing salicylic acid, and you’ll be verruca-free in no time.

Toenail fungus

Toenail fungus occurs when funghi gets under the nail and begins to grow. While pretty harmless at first (if you don’t mind discoloured nails ruining your pedi), eventually your nail with grow thicker until it starts crumbling. Ouch.

How to get rid of it?

Surprise, surprise, fungus also thrives in humid conditions. Avoid the risk of infection by always wearing clean socks and not going swimming when you have broken skin. If you’re trying to get rid of nail fungus, there are lots of treatments available. Using a lacquer, cream, or gel, apply treatment directly onto the infected nail. This will not only banish the infection, but prevent it coming back. If it is unmanageable, seek medical advice.

Bunions

Bunions are caused by a crooked joint in the toe. While often hereditary, they can be worsened, or even formed by your footwear. If you constantly force your feet into shoes that are too narrow and pointy, you may end up with painful bunions.

How do I treat them?

If you have a super painful, persistent bunion, we have bad news for you. A lot of bunions require surgery. However, if yours isn’t under-the-knife level bad, treatment is pretty simple. Invest in pads and sleeves which are designed to cushion the bunion, preventing it from further irritation (and you from a lot of pain). Good fitting shoes are also a necessity – stop forcing your feet into shoes that are too small!

How to avoid summer health traps

festival checklist

Summer is fun. Summer is great. It’s the most wonderful time of the year because it’s full of music, good food, and great friends. The problem is, Summer is just sooo good that most of us end up forget to be careful and end up falling into classic summer health traps year after year. Whoops. Luckily for you, we’ve created a handy guide to keep you as healthy as possible all summer long.

festival checklist

Festivals

Festivals are hands down the best bit of summer. Is there anything better than rolling around in glitter, getting your best outfit on, beating an assault course of mud, watching all your fave bands, and eating the most amazing food imaginable? All with your mates?! We didn’t think so.

As great as festivals are, they’re a breeding ground for health problems...

Blisters

Spending days on end in mosh pits and running around campsites is both super fun and a direct assault on your poor feet. So what if the only pair of glittery wellies left are a size too big? They look good, right? Wrong! Well, they do look good, but it’s important your footwear is the correct size to prevent rubbing and those blasted blisters. Oh, and don’t forget socks! Opt for glittery ones to make them more festival appropriate, just don’t forget them.

If your feet start screaming by day 2, it’s time to pop some blister patches on and say sorry. Oh FYI, if you start your weekend with blister patches (or even plasters) on, you won’t develop blisters in the first place. Smart, right?

If you think your blister is infected (full of pus, hot to the touch etc), keeps coming back, or is abnormally painful – you should seek medical advice.

Alcohol

If you’re over 18, then having a drink or two at a festival whilst watching your favourite band is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Unfortunately, the atmosphere of festivals can make it easy to lose track of your alcohol intake, and too much alcohol + sun doesn’t end well. To avoid being horrendously hungover in the middle of nowhere, make sure you stay hydrated by drinking water frequently and know your limits.

Sexual health

Festivals are a great way to make new friends. It’s hard not to when you’re dealing with muddy campsites, torrential rain, and those…character building toilets. Whilst you can make friends for life, you could also meet potential love interests (*wink*). If you do end up hooking up with anyone, make sure you are protected and use condoms. They are the only contraception that reduce the risk of pregnancy and the risk of contracting STIs/STDs, so don’t forget them!

Pool side

Whether you’re channeling your inner Michael Phelps or posing on a flamingo float for the grid, hitting the pool is a summer essential. While we like to imagine pools as the ultimate level of glamour (cocktails by the pool, anyone?), they can cause some health problems.

The most annoying? Verrucas. If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to have one, you know how painful they can be. Contrary to popular belief, though, they aren’t dangerous. If you get any, simply treat the infection with specially designed products and they’ll be gone within 2 months.

Fun in the sun

Okay so maybe Britain doesn’t have the hottest summers ever. Because of this, some of us (all of us) might get a bit too excited and run out of the house at the slightest sign of sunshine. In between our countless picnics, it’s important we keep our sun cream topped up. Yep, applying once before you leave the house just won’t cut it, especially if you don’t use the correct sun cream. Opt for a sun cream that is suited to your needs (e.g. waterproof if you’re gonna hit the pool).

It’s recommended we use sun creams with an SPF factor of at least 30, and make sure you apply it correctly – each sun cream will come with its own set of instructions so make sure you follow them.

Hay fever

When summer rolls round, take a moment to reflect on those poor souls who suffer from hay fever. We have to give them credit though, while their body is physically rejecting the grass, they’ll troop on and set up camp at their nearest common with a pitcher. That’s dedication. How do they do it? Well, they remember to take their allergy tablets and so they’re good to go.

How to maximise your smile

man smiling to show of whiter teeth

Whether you’re with a date or your ma, nothing will help you turn on the charm more than a million-dollar smile. A grin here and there can be a guy’s strongest weapon, so you wanna make sure those pearly whites are up to par. There are a few things you can do to ensure whiter, brighter gnashers, to maximise that smile. Cosmetic factors aside, taking care of your oral health should be at the top of your list of priorities. That’s why we’ve put together a routine that’ll have you smiling from ear to ear because your teeth both look and feel good.

man smiling to show of whiter teeth

Brush ’em properly

Whether you use a manual or electric toothbrush shouldn’t matter if you’re brushing your teeth thoroughly (although an electric toothbrush will do a lot of the work for you – our pick is the Philips Sonicare 3 Series Gum Health Electric Toothbrush). Make sure you’re cleaning each tooth thoroughly AND showing your gums some attention, too. And take care of your tools – switch out your toothbrush or brush head every two to three months to avoid any bacteria build-up.

Try out charcoal toothpaste

Charcoal toothpaste is currently the biggest thing in teeth whitening. The charcoal helps remove deep stains caused by tea, coffee and tobacco. We’ve tried and tested the Beverly Hills Formula Activated Charcoal Toothpaste and can assure you it works. If you want a more traditional at-home teeth whitening product, use the iWhite Teeth Whitening Kit. Whiter teeth await you…

Sweet tongue, too

Easy to forget, but vital that you don’t if you want a bright smile AND healthy mouth. Use a tongue scraper to make sure your whole mouth is as clean as possible. Bacteria build-up on your tongue is bad for your teeth and will give your breath a one-way ticket to stinky town.

Get gargling

If you don’t use mouthwash, you should. A 30-second gargle is a great way to make sure you get a thorough clean and kill any lingering bacteria. Try to use a product with low/no alcohol, though, such as Oral B Complete Rinse. Alcohol dries out your mouth and can make it more susceptible to bacteria.

Never forget to floss

Seriously. It’s probably the most important step in any oral care regime and one that a lot of people forget. Your teeth might be gleaming white, but if your gums are a darker colour around the tooth and often bleed when you brush, it’s a sign that they’re not in top condition. Flossing can fix this, though, so make sure you add this step to your morning and night routine. After all, there’s nothing dashing about a smile with a tooth missing here and there!
