Make your decisions with confidence

With the new year on its way, many of us will be planning to make decisions (big and small) that we hope will lead us in better directions. But it’s a lot easier to think about those decisions than to make them. So we asked mindfulness expert Clare Dimond to share her top tips on decision making. We hope they’ll help you see that the changes you want to make are a lot more achievable than you think.

1. Go with your gut

Clare makes the bold claim that there’s no such thing as a difficult decision. She explains that deep down we always know what to do – the key is stop second-guessing the future and listen to our guts.

2. You have control

Clare says there’s no such thing as a bad decision. Now this is surely music to your ears! If you find you’re unhappy about a decision you’ve made, it’s simply life giving you a second chance to make the right choice. You always have the power to change your circumstances.

3. Don’t just say it… DO IT!

This is the big one. We could think about our decisions forever, but unless we act on them, we’re not actually deciding anything. Clare explains that our insecure thinking is what stops us acting on what we know we want to do. But if you feel it’s right, you shouldn’t let anything stop you. You need to go for it.

HOW TO: Meghan Markle makeup look

Their engagement was probs the most exciting news of the year, so it’s no surprise that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are the couple of the moment. But we have to say, even though Harry is a hottie, it’s Miss Markle who’s stolen our hearts. We asked makeup artist Emily Clarkson to show you how to recreate her classy natural makeup look…#PrincessVibes

1. Glow from within

Meghan’s skin always looks radiant, but you don’t have to be a princess in the making to get that glow-from-within look. Just mix a drop of MUA Prism Strobe Cream in Flash into your foundation before application. We used it with B. Flawless Matte Foundation, for a stunning combo!

2. Full and natural

To get Meghan’s natural and full brows, fill in any sparse areas with B. Pro Longwear Eyebrow Pomade. Don’t go too crazy – a light touch is key.

3. Neutral eyeshadow

We chose a mixture of brown shades from the Makeup Revolution Palette Pro HD Amplified in Neutral Cool to get Meghan’s look. Apply the pigment to your eyelid only (taking it down onto the lower lash line will make the look too glam), then add a touch of gold shimmer on top for sparkle.

4. Smoky liner

Line top lash line with GOSH Eye Brow Pencil in Brown and smudge into the roots of the lashes for a smoky effect. Take the product to the outer corner of your eye and blend it into your lower lash line, to give eyes definition.

5. Fluttery falsies

Finish with some falsies, choosing ones that look as natural as poss. Eylure Volume False Lashes in 083 are the perfect choice. Blend with your natural lashes with a slick of black mascara.

6. Blush ’n’ bronze

Lightly contour your cheekbones with e.l.f Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in Fiji. Sweep over your temples, to give you a glow, then dust onto the apples of your cheeks for a natural-looking flush.

7. Signature nude lip

Meghan usually rocks a nude pout, so keep your lip colour simple. We used B. Cassie Lomas Matte Liquid Lipstick in All About Me for a perfect finish.

The Ultimate Guide to Fragrance

how-to-wear-fragrance

When you start looking for a new scent, the feeling can be a little overwhelming. There's so much to choose from! Do you go with oriental or citrus? Fruity or floral? What's a base note? Where do I spray my perfume for it to last longest? The questions are seemingly endless... but we're here to simplify.

To help you on your quest to find your scented soulmate for any occasion, follow our ultimate fragrance guide - with sweet smelling tips and advice to make your decision easier.

Mixed fragrances for her banner

Name That Note - Top, Heart or Base?

In the world of fragrance, ‘notes’ are used by experts to describe different layers in a single fragrance. The magic formula of a fragrance should always include the perfect balance of ‘top’, ‘middle’ and ‘base’ notes – each adding its own unique blend to the final product.

But what do they mean?

Top Notes

Think: citrus, light fruits and herbs.

Fresh and light, these notes
are the layer of aroma you
would smell first. They tend to evaporate fairly quickly after
you’ve applied your perfume
or aftershave and are often considered the selling point
of a particular blend.

Heart Notes

Think: rose, lavender, geranium and neroli.

Unlike top notes, this layer
of the blend is the heart of
your scent and becomes
more apparent once the
top note has evaporated.

Base Notes

Think: vanilla, cedarwood, sandalwood and musk.

This layer of a fragrance is what
you can smell once the middle
note has worn off. These notes
last the longest and add real
depth to your scent. They are often considered the most memorable note in the scent.

Now you know there are three different layers, and ultimately three different experiences to a perfume, next time you are testing one out in a shop - let it sit on the skin for a while. Spray it onto a pulse point, and go for a walk. After time, the scent will develop and you will get a better understanding of what amazing smells the perfume contains.

Where to Apply Your Fragrance

Applying perfume should be pleasant and relaxing; a true "me moment". Follow our guide on where to spray your fragrance to get the optimum scent every single time. Once you've tried them all out, you can pick a few that work for you.

fragrance

Neck and Collarbone: Spritz your neck and collarbone lightly, making sure your bottle is at least 30 cm away from your skin. This is to make sure the alcohol content in the perfume doesn't dry out your skin.

fragrance

Behind Your Ears: Spray the perfume on each side behind your ears and on the side of your neck. This is where you will find your pulse points. Your blood is warmer in these places, so the scent will last longer.

fragrance

Your Hair: Again, very gently, hold the perfume bottle at least 30 cm away from your hair, to prevent the alcohol content from drying it out.

fragrance

Your Wrists: Back to the pulse points, gentle spray perfume to your wrists. If you opt for this area, do not rub your wrists together after -  as this can dull the scent - simply dab them together.

fragrance

Back of Your Knees: This is especially great for summer when you can dare to bare when it comes to legs. The back of your knees is an area where the veins are close to the skin, therefore the blood is warmer and the skin is softer, emitting the scent more intensely.

fragrance

Ankles and Feet: Again, a summer favourite - spritzing your ankles and feet will let the scent gently follow you wherever you go.

When To Wear Fragrances

Whether you’re going to work, the beach or dressing up for a birthday or wedding, the wide selection of fragrance families offer something for everyone. Fragrance families each complement certain seasons, moods or even outfits, so it’s worth thinking about which scent is suitable for each occasion. Here are a few examples of when you might wear a fragrance and their most popular notes.

Perfume At Work

We spend a lot of our time at work, so it’s essential to pick a scent that matches our work environment. Go for light, fresh and delicate fragrances from the floral or fruity families for example apple, green tea, mint and citrus, as these won’t come across as too overpowering during the day – and take care not to overspray at work.

For A Special Occasion

Whether you’re heading to a wedding, a first date or a night out, you want your scent to reflect your mood and surroundings. For formal occasions, light perfumes and aftershaves from the wooden families are a popular choice, with notes such as amber, musk and patchouli.

If you’re feeling flirty or romantic, scents from the floral and oriental fragrance families like orange blossom, jasmine and rose are an excellent choice as they give off a much richer and deeper aroma.

Scents For The Season

Summer: During the hotter months, opt for a scent with zesty, wooden or grassy notes to reflect the chilled out vibe. Fresh, aquatic notes from the marine family are also an excellent choice.

Spring: Everything feels a little fresher in the spring, so your scent should match the bright nature of the season! Think light, floral notes such as freesia, rose and geranium to put the spring back into your step.

Autumn: Embrace the change of the season by switching up your summer scents with woody, earthier fragrances to match the falling leaves bought on by autumn!

Winter: Shake off the winter blues and get ready for party season with a scent that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Think notes of blackberry, coffee and wintery amber accord to see you through the colder month.

Aftershave, Colgolne, EDT, EDP... Help! What's the difference?

When purchasing a new fragrance, you have a few options to choose from. Not sure what all the acronyms mean? Well, here's the low-down:

Aftershave: Formulated to be used after shaving, an aftershave contains a small amount of alcohol designed to heal cuts or to close pores which have enlarged during shaving. It comes with a charming scent, but the fragrant concentration is very small -  so it's not designed to last very long.

Cologne: A light concentration of fragrance which contains around 2-5% essential oils which will usually last around 2 hours on the skin. Also known as EDC.

Eau de Toilette: A popular choice for both men and women to wear throughout the day, you will usually find an EDT to contain around 10% essential oil and to last around 4 hours. It's best to keep this in your bag for mid-day top ups if you want to enjoy the aroma all day long.

Eau de Parfum: With around 15-20% essential oil content., an EDP provides a longer-lasting, richer scent. You will not need to top this up as much as an EDT or EDC, as it as a longevity of around 5-6 hours when sprayed on the skin.

Parfum: The purest option of them all, a parfum is a truly luxurious options with between 20 and 30% essential oil content. There is no need to top this up throughout the day!

Fragrance for Car Lovers

If he lives life in the fast lane then his cool exterior should be embodied in a classic, crisp fragrance.

Perfumes encased in decadent bottles will give off a powerful exterior - much like his favourite sports car.

Look out for fragrances with rich, spicy notes such as cinnamon which exude warmth and are also highly masculine.

These fragrances are long-lasting and durable, meaning this iconic man can prevail throughout the day.

Perfect for a man who likes the fast, finer things in life.

Fresh, light smelling fragrances have a modern, clean aura about them and can be worn in a variety of situations - day or night.

Watch out for fragrances that have prominent notes of mandarin as these provide citrus, light smells with an enticing, punchy kick. Combine these with fruity undernotes such as pineapple to calm and soften the fragrance and this makes for the ideal day-to-night fragrance.

Perfect for him to wear watching his favourite flicks, or on-the-go.

Fragrances with bold and adventurous bottles are perfect as they portray an energetic image which he needs when he's rocking at his favourite band's gig.

A scent that doesn't lie too heavy on the skin is ideal for this music lover. Rhubarb and blood orange are both zesty and sweet, creating the perfect balance when mixed with heavier notes such as Cypress and musk.

These scents tend to be lighter, so should be spritzed generously if he wants to stand out from the crowd  - just like a timeless hit.

These distinctive fragrances are long-lasting so he won't have to top up during the day - one less thing for him to worry about.

When it comes to a vintage lover, the attention is placed on the legacy of a brand. Keep an eye out for old classics that have stood the test of time and prevailed through every generation.

Typical of a classic aftershave are those that possess spiced and sage undertones - these fragrances are still hugely popular now. A spiced, woody scent will submerge into the skin leaving a soothing sensation. Not only will he smell great, his skin will feel revitalized and youthful too.

The Ultimate Guide to Mineral Makeup

Mineral makeup 1

With so many beauty buzz words flying about (not to mention of-the-minute trends!) it’s easy to feel a little lost. So to help you fully understand the words displayed across our favourite products we’ve put together handy guides that go back to basics – and then some. Today’s masterclass? The ultimate guide to mineral makeup…

Mineral makeup GIF

What is Mineral Makeup?

A mineral product by definition has a formula made up of very small minerals (duh) such as iron oxides, zinc oxide, talc and titanium oxide. It may sound a little science-y but the massive difference between more traditional products and mineral is that the latter is free from preservatives and irritants.

Why should I use Mineral Makeup?

There are so many reasons! If you have sensitive skin, blemish-prone skin or irritated skin then mineral makeup can work wonders as it is non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores).

If you have combination or oily skin, you’ll be pleased to know that mineral makeup can help absorb excess oil too. Say bye bye to shiny T-zones!

How Do I know if a Product is Mineral?

Beauty brands recognise the powers and the demand for this super breathable composition, so if they have created a mineral formula you’ll know about it! The word ‘mineral’ will be visible on the packaging and sometimes in the brand name itself if they specialise exclusively in this style of makeup.

Are Mineral Products always in Powder Form?

Not all mineral makeup products are powders. While they may be more common (especially in foundation form) you can also find liquid mineral products including mascaras, face masks and primers.

Mineral makeup 1

Should I Switch to a Mineral Foundation?

For sensitive, oily and blemish-prone skin types you may benefit from using mineral foundation due to the kind-to-skin coverage they promise.

Just like traditional foundations, there’s a mineral foundation for most skin concerns including anti-ageing and colour correcting formulas. When choosing a foundation there’s never a one-size-fits-all approach so feel free to get advice from beauty advisors on your skin type to make the right choice for you.

Does 'Mineral' mean the same as 'All-natural' and 'Organic'?

They all may sound like they are interchangeable adjectives, but all three words mean different things.

Certified organic products are strictly regulated and must adhere to legal standards before it can be promoted as ‘organic.’ Whereas ‘natural’ and ‘mineral’ products are unregulated and are defined by slogans on the packaging.

Always look out for the words on the packaging or any recognised stamps of approval to ensure you’re purchasing the right product.

HOW TO: Red and gold Christmas makeup look

Nothing screams festive like a red and gold combo… but why stop at the baubles? We just couldn’t resist creating a makeup look with these Christmassy colours, and take it from us – the end result is the perfect balance of classy and festive. Just what you need for that approaching office party.

1. Clementine crease

Apply a burnt-orange shade from the MUA Eyeshadow Palette in Burning Embers to your crease. Then apply the same colour under your eye, blending across the lower lash line.

Step1

2. Red hot and smoky

Now you’ve got your transition colour in place, it’s time to add a red shadow from the Burning Embers palette. Pack the pigment onto your eyelid and blend into the crease to create a smoky effect. Then sweep the product down from the outer corner and blend it along the lower lash line.

TOP TIP: Lift the eyelid upwards to give yourself more space when blending.

Step2

3. Gold touch

Time for some sparkle! Apply B. Cassie Lomas Glitter Pigment in Supermodel Sheen to the inner corners of your eyes. Then blend it into both the upper and lower lash lines.

Step3

4. Flutter-full lashes

This makeup look needs full lashes. Try Ardell False Lashes Wispies 113 for a fluttery finish. Then blend your real lashes into the falsies with a good mascara – we recommend MUA Eye Define Waterproof Mascara.

Time to perfect your pout for those mistletoe moments. Highlight your Cupid’s bow with the B. Cassie Lomas Glitter Pigment in Supermodel Sheen, then fill in your lips with MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer in Reckless.

Step 1 & 2 – Prime & prep

Green eyeshadow step 1

As this is a look that brings the drama, we want it to last all day and all night. The only way to ensure maximum hold is to start with an even application of primer. Next line up a piece of tape underneath your lower lash line on both eyes.

Step 3 – Apply eyeliner across eyelids

Green eyeshadow step 2

Take an emerald green eyeliner and apply across your entire eyelid until you get a bold block finish. Draw a winged shape to the outer corners of the eye.

Step 4 – Amp it up with green eyeshadow

Green eyeshadow step 3

Layer green glitter eyeshadow over your base shape. As you’re working with loose powder dabbing this on bit-by-bit is the best way to build up the effect.

Step 5 – Add shading

Green eyeshadow step 4

This step is what sets apart the novices from the pros – shading. Coat a fluffy eyeshadow brush (that’s perfect for blending) and artfully work it into the outer corners of the eyes.

Step 6 – Define with liquid eyeliner

Green eyeshadow step 5

Draw along the upper lash line with black liquid eyeliner. Don’t forget to extend the line to run at the edge of your flick.

Step 7 – Remove the tape and excess

Green eyeshadow step 6

Carefully peel back the tape to reveal your super straight line. If any excess eyeshadow is still visible dust away with a fan brush.

Step 8 & 9 – Add definition

Green eyeshadow step 8

Draw along the waterline with green eyeliner to really make your eyes pop. Next finish with a little dusting of highlighter under the brow arches and inner corners of the eyes.

Step 10, 11 & 12 – Finishing touches

Green eyeshadow step 9

Apply highlighter under the eyes to get rid of any dark circles and to neaten up your eye makeup. Coat lashes in mascara and add some falsies into the mix if you want to take the look to the next level.

HOW TO: New Year’s Eve heavy metal pop makeup

On the hunt for the perfect New Year’s Eve makeup? Everyone loves a lil smoky-eye action for their party makeup, but here’s how to spice it up to give it some edge. We’ve channelled fireworks vibes and added a pop of metallic colour – and gotta say, we love the results. The best bit? You can use any accent colour you want and make the look work for you.

1. Primed to perfection

You need to pack on a lot of eyeshadow to make the look work, so priming your lids is essential to help the shadows stay all night long. Just apply a thin layer of e.l.f Shadow Lock Eye Primer in Sheer all over your eyelids.

Step1

2. Black to basics

The MUA Professional 6 Shade Palette in Smokey Shadows is perfect for this look. Apply a black eyeshadow to the inner and outer corners of the eyes, and across the crease, leaving a space in the centre of the eyelid. Use the same eyeshadow on the lower lash line, once again applying the pigment to the inner and outer corners, and leaving a space in the middle.

Step2

3. Pop eyeshadow

Now the fun bit! Pick a pop of colour to lift the look. We went for a pink shade from the I Heart Makeup Eyeshadow Palette in Chocolate Love. Pack your chosen colour onto the spaces you left free in the centre of the eyelids and lower lash lines, then blend it in with the black shadow for a seamless finish.

TOP TIP: Use a slightly damp brush for maximum colour payoff.

Step3

4. One last shimmer

Add Cassie Lomas Glitter Pigment in Shine On to the inner corners of your eyes, to brighten the look even more.

Step4

5. Final flutter

Complete the look with falsies and a little B. Kohl Eye Liner in Black on the waterline.
