Find out all about the first male model for B. cosmetics

If you’ve dismissed vegan makeup as being a bit too spenny, we bet you haven’t met British beauty brand B. yet. With a mission to create vegan beauty products bang on budget, it’s one of the best cruelty-free (and purse-friendly) brands we’ve come across.

Celebrating diversity in all of its guises, the brand has called on a squad of models from all genders and ethnicities to front its new makeup campaign. Including top blogger, Georgie Aldous – who works in the Superdrug Great Yarmouth Store – the first male model to star in a makeup campaign for the brand.

He told us; “Working in store and seeing the pictures coming in was absolutely crazy. I’m really proud to be part of this because it’s a very inclusive campaign and such a diverse range of models were used.”

A devout vegan, Georgie, with his turquoise hair, sums up B.’s inclusive ‘be who you are’ vibe perfectly and shows that it’s a-OK for men to wear makeup.

And as for the beauty products – well, they’re blimmin’ brilliant. From foundations that give poreless, skin-perfecting coverage to velvet matte lipsticks in seriously statement shades, you’re gonna want the lot.

So what are Georgie’s fave products from the range?

“The B. Flawless Silk Foundation is one of the best. It makes my skin look so glowy. My favourite product from the B. Cassie Lomas range would have to be the Whipped Bronzer, it’s so pretty and applies really well.”

Step 2 – Dab on grey

Take a makeup sponge and coat it in grey nail polish (spill out a splodge of product and dab the sponge into it rather than brushing it on to the sponge). Dab over the white base coat until you have a speckled finish.

Marble Nail art 3

Step 3 – Add contrast

Once your grey has dried, it’s time to take your talons into marble territory. Dip a cuticle/nail art stick into black polish and draw cracked lines all over the nail. The trick is to make each nail look different to strive for asymmetrical looks. Once you’re happy with the look, finish with a glossy top coat to seal and prevent chipping.

Note: If your hair is not straight – you may want to straighten it now. If you are happy with it, you can straighten it once your pony is ready. 4th Hair Style Idea: The Slick Back Look

This is a perfect hair style for statement earrings or statement makeup as it completely uncovers your face and ears while remaining both glamourous and edgy. Here’s how to get the look:

The Slick Back Look

Step 1: Brush, brush, brush

To make hair easy to style it’s important to brush through your hair using a detangler.

The Slick Back Look

Step 2: Section off the front top bit of hair

To start, section off the front top bit of hair and clip it away. Take the hair from the front, all the way to the crown to ensure we have enough hair to conceal teased tresses underneath.

The Slick Back Look

Step 3:  Smooth both sides and pin in place

Using a backcombing brush, smooth both side sections and pin them back placing the pins in an X shape. Spray both sides with hair spray for extra hold. If you want to rock a “wet” look, apply gel or serum to the sides.

The Slick Back Look

Step 4: Part the top hair into two sections and tease

It’s time to work with the hair you had clipped away. Part it into two, clip the front one out of the way and tease the one that’s at the crown. Go back to the front one and part again and repeat the teasing process. You can do this three or four times. Brush through and neaten the hair that will be placed on the top of your backcombed tresses.

The Slick Back Look

Step 5: Finish with hair spray

To make sure the finish of this look is smooth and neat, tidy up the top by brushing through with a backcombing brush and hairspray. Again, you can go for a toothbrush too (as long as you don’t use it for brushing teeth after!). Finish with a whole lot of hair spray.

The Slick Back Look

And now for the… Earrings!

Stunning!

5th Hair Style Idea: Vintage Waves

If you want to show off your romantic look with a touch of old school glam, go for vintage waves with a side parting. This hair style is simply perfect for statement earrings matched both with a day or night outfit.

Vintage waves S

Step 1: Detangle and brush through

Brush through your hair, making sure it is completely knot and tangle free.

Vintage waves S

Step 2: Apply heat protection and go for a deep side parting

Using a heat protection spray is really important to make sure your hair isn’t damaged because of the heat in electrical hair stylers. Go for a deep side parting and clip away the part of your hair you are not going to curl straight away.

Vintage waves S

Step 3: Time to curl

Using a wand, start curling away from the face. Count to 10, release and gently pull the strand. Repeat on all of your hair apart from  the top front on the other side – the side fringe area. Curl the fringe area last, making sure the hair is at the base of the wand for maximum volume.

Vintage waves S

Step 4: Brush though the curls gently and smooth the side

Brush though the curls away from the face using a wide toothed comb or brush. For extra volume, brush the fringe area up. Add serum to the side hair making it smoother and flatter. Tuck it behind the ear. Continue to add a bit of serum to all of the curls using your fingers.

Vintage waves S

Step 5: Hair spray time

Finish the look with hair spray. For maximum hold, go for a strong hold hair spray.

Vintage waves S

Hello earrings!

Looking very vintage and glamorous!

How to Use a Silicone Blender

Silicone blender

The humble makeup sponge has served us well over the years, but now there’s a new tool in town. Introducing the silicone makeup sponge. If you thought you could use this in the same way as a standard blender, think again. Cue our handy step-by-step video…

Top tips & tricks

Silicone blender

To apply Foundation:

With sponges we tend to blend and apply in circular and smudge-like motions. But with a silicone blender always dab on your foundation and build up the coverage. This dabbing technique will also ensure a matte finish.

Silicone blender

To Contour:

Use the pointy edge of the blender to create your contour guidelines, and then soften the line by dabbing to blend. Clean the blender in-between colour changes by running under water.

Silicone blender

To Bake:

If you’re getting all glammed up for a night out, then baking is a must. To set your translucent powder with a silicone blender all you need to do is dab on, leave to sit on the skin for 5-10 minutes and dust off with a fan brush.

Silicone blender

To Highlight:

When highlighting always coat the tip of the blender in your shimmering product to ensure precision. Focus on the usual areas (brow arches, cheekbones, Cupid ’s bow) and blend it out with a (you guessed it!) light dabbing technique.

Why use a silicone blender?

There are so many reasons to swap your usual sponge for a silicone blender. Here’s why this small-but-mighty applicator is just as revolutionary to the beauty game as oval brushes:

  • Hygienic: It’s super easy to clean (wipe it down with rubbing alcohol or hot water and soap) and it also doesn’t harbour any bacteria as it dries quickly. This means you’re less likely to clog pores and cause breakouts.
  • Waste less: The silicone, non-porous texture means that not a single drop of precious product is ever absorbed into the blender itself. You may find you’ll need half the usual amount of foundation to cover the entire face so always start with fewer drops on the back of your hand and build up coverage bit-by-bit.
  • Longer lasting: If you’re a beauty lover like we are here at Superdrug, then we bet you’ve got a stack of sponges and foam blenders just waiting to be used up on your next experimental beauty look. When you switch to silicone you won’t need to constantly replace your blender or keep spares which will save you money and space in your beauty kit. It’s a win win!

Our resident curl guru dishes the dirt on five new launches for girls with curls

I think I speak for most of us when I say that coping with curls can be a real struggle. There was defs a time when my hair saw the inside of a straightener more than it saw daylight, but trust me when I say that there are ways to manage your mane! All curls are different, so it’s all about finding the right products and processes for your hair. This can take a while (I’ve done the leg work for you), so to put you on the right track, I’ve pulled together my top five picks for girls with curls.

Get the basics right

Curly hair is naturally dry, so use shampoos and conditioners that are free of parabens and sulfates, which add to the problem. Shea Moisture has a range of hair-washing products that are designed for different curl types – and they smell amazing!

TOP TIP: Apply some conditioner on the ends before you shampoo to ensure maximum moisture.

Tangled tresses

Don’t drag a brush through your curls every day. It will cause breakage, increase the frizz factor and leave your hair dry and damaged. The trick is to use a detangling solution. Cantu Coil Calm Detangler is my morning go-to.

Moisture masks

Growing up, I thought frizz was simply a force of nature that I just had to accept… WRONG! When your hair is frizzy, it’s because it’s dehydrated – which means it’s mask time! I tried this Protein Pack from Palmer’s the other night and it gave my hair a much-needed moisture boost. 10/10 recommend!

TOP TIP: Coconut oil works like magic on dry, curly hair, so any hair product containing it will keep the frizz at bay.

Curl Definer = life

Now this is a product that genuinely changed my life. I spent years putting mousses and styling oils in my hair, hoping they’d help my curls look less blah and more YAAAAS! They never really worked, and it was only when I started rooting around in the curly hair section that I discovered curl definers. My favourite is the Twisted Sista Curl Activator Cream. It works a dream on my hair and keeps my curls looking great all day.

Hair oil…yes or no?

There’s some debate about whether oil is good for curly hair. In my experience, I’ve found that styling oils make my hair look greasy and #returnofthefrizz. What does work is oil-masking your hair. I use Vatika Naturals Enriched Coconut Oil once every couple of weeks as a hair treatment. Section and smother your hair in the stuff, then wash it out and show off that shine.
