Step 1 – Prep the Base

File your talons so they are all similar in shape and length. Take a neutral-coloured nail polish (we’ve used mauve, but you can use pinks or nudes) and apply two coats to each nail, so you have a solid block colour base. Leave to dry before moving on to the next step.

Rose Gold Nails Step 1

Step 2 – Place Tape over Nail

Cut a small piece of nail art tape and use tweezers to position the tape just under the tip of the nail.

Rose Gold Nails Step 2

Step 3 – Coat Tips in Rose Gold

Take your rose gold nail polish and cover the exposed tip. Try to keep inside the line, but don’t worry if you spill on to the tape.

Rose Gold Nails Step 3

Step 4 – Remove the Tape

Once the polish has dried, peel the tape back slowly using tweezers to reveal your rose gold tips.

Step 1 – Perfect your base

File and buff nails until they are similar in size and shape. Take a pale blue polish and apply two coats so you have a colour block base.

Winter Nail Art Step 1

Step 2 – Create the candy cane outline

Dip a cuticle stick in white nail polish and create the outline of your candy canes. To get an even design, mimic the shape of a heart.

Winter Nail Art Step 2

Step 3 – Add the stripes

Once your outline is dry, take a clean cuticle stick and coat in red nail polish. Then draw even stripes along your candy cane, making sure that both sweeties are symmetrical.

Winter Nail Art Step 3

Step 4 – Apply a top coat

To prevent any chipping and to add a hint of gloss, we’re finishing up with a transparent top coat.

You can choose to continue this cute candy cane design on every nail. Or go for a more stripped back look by applying candy canes on your ring fingers only alongside a sophisticated polka dot design.

First Step to Finding Best Lipstick for Dark Skin

Find out what is your undertone: warm, cool or neutral. If you have a cool undertone, shades such as red with a blue tone, purple or violet would look perfect on you. If your undertone is warm, think coral, luscious pink or even a warm magenta. If you’re neutral, both warm and cool shades will work wonders on you. Not sure how to find out what your skin undertone is? We’ve got a guide to help you here.

Test, Try and Go Bold

Shock yourself by trying the craziest shade first! Yes, hello green, blue and yellow! Now that you’ve gone for the most adventurous shade, and saw yourself rocking it, try picking one that you genuinely loved but had doubts about. Try it on. Does it complement your skin tone? Does it make your face look completely refreshed? If you’ve answered yes, plus you suddenly feel on top of the word – you’ve found your shade. Besides, that’s what lipstick is meant to do: add oodles of confidence and make you feel fabulous. Quick tip: Always look at how makeup looks on you in daylight, as sometimes artificial lights can be deceiving!

Layer up to Make the Colour Pop

If you are keen on a colour that pops, make sure the lipstick you’re going for is really pigmented – a quick swatch can reveal how strong the pigments are. If all you need is a single swipe, then rest assured that you’ve picked a really highly pigmented lippie. If you need to layer it up, it means that the lipstick is less pigmented. This also can work perfectly if you want a subtle touch of colour rather than a statement-making hue.

10 Steps to Healthy Nails

healthy nails

Can’t wait to get healthier nails? You’re in luck. Follow our 10 steps to healthy nails, and you will be rocking fabulous talons in no time!

healthy nails

Step 1: If you’re a biter, stop right now

Biting nails is not only a bad habit, it’s actually really unhealthy for the wellbeing of your hands and your body! Think about it – how many times you’ve kept your hands around your mouth when you forgot to wash them after the train or tube? If you are a nail biter, you are more likely to bring bacteria closer to your mouth, which can heighten the probability of in getting ill. In addition, it can affect the health of your teeth, not to mention the nails themselves, they can look weakened and unhealthy.

Pretty Quik Pretty Quik Stop Nail Biting Polish 25ml £2.99 Buy Now

Step 2: Where are those yellow rubber gloves?

Washing the dishes? Cleaning the bathroom? Let’s not count the number of times we’ve sneakily done it without popping rubber gloves on. As a result, we ended up with dry skin on our hands and weaker nails. Cleaning liquids and detergents can be very damaging to our skin and nails as they are full of chemicals, so protect your paws by wearing gloves.

Step 3: Weekly TLC session for your nails is a good idea

Filing, cuticle care and general maintenance is key to healthy nails. Commit half an hour or twenty minutes a week and your talons will thank you for it. This doesn’t have to include applying a colour if you are short on time, but just a bit of care will go a long way. Another great tip is moisturising your cuticles every night just before bed.

Step 4: Nail varnish coming off? Don’t pick on it!

Remove nail varnish gently rather than picking on it. Often, when you pick on it, you’re risking taking the top layer of your nail off, ouch!

Step 5: Alternate types of manicures you’re getting

If you love getting acrylic or gel nails done, make sure you alternate and get a simple polish or break in between. Also, never say yes to a rushed gel or acrylic removal job – this can leave your nails vulnerable and prone to breakage.

Step 6: Always go for base and top coats

If you’re tempted to skip these, don’t. A good base coat will protect your nails from staining and act as an extra wall that makes sure as few of those naughty chemicals get into your nails as possible. Plus, a top coat will help the varnish to stay chip-free for longer.

Step 7: Oh yum, biotin… and other vitamins!

Biotin, also known as vitamin H, helps with strength, growth and general health of not only nails, but also skin and hair. There are really good supplements out there that have biotin in them. You can also get it from certain foods: Bananas, mushrooms, wholegrains, avocado and salmon – yummy!

healthy nails

Step 8: Treatments and nail oils are your friends

Using a cuticle oil and moisturising your cuticles will help your nails grow and look healthy. You’ll see the results of adding this step to your beauty routine pretty quickly!

Step 9: Nope, you won’t just scrape it off with your nails

We’ve all been there! Trying to open lids, taking stickers off – all using our talons. Don’t use your nails as tools, this weakens them. Consider doing it slowly, or using a tool or gadget to help.

Step 10: Your nails also need a breather

Sometimes it’s a great idea to just give your nails a break. No nail varnishes, gels or acrylic nails. This will allow your nails to breathe, recover and not only look healthy but be healthy.

How to Deal With Dry Lips

how to tackle dry lips

Do you have dry lips? Make it a thing of the past with this all-you-need-to-know guide. From what causes sore, chapped lips to how to prevent and treat them, we’ve got it covered.

how to tackle dry lips

What Causes Dry Lips?

The skin on your lips is very thin and delicate and therefore more sensitive. You’ll notice your lips become drier or chapped when the air temperature drops, when there’s a bitter wind, or when you’ve been subjected to air conditioning, or they can be burnt when you’re in the sun. In fact, more moisture is lost through your lips than through any other part of your face or body, so it’s no surprise that your lips need extra attention and lots of moisturising. Upping your water intake to at least one litre a day will make sure your body is hydrated, which in turn gives your lips a moisture boost, but sometimes you need a little help from lip exfoliators and balms, too.

Nivea NIVEA SUN Lip Balm with SPF 30, 4.8g £3.29 Buy Now
Palmer's Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Balm with SPF 15 4g £1.99 Buy Now
Carmex Carmex Original Pot 2G £2.69 Buy Now
Superdrug Superdrug Blue Lip Balm Stick 4.8g £0.99 Buy Now

How to Prevent Dry Lips?

Exfoliate lips twice a week to remove dead skin cells and create a smooth surface to apply your lip balm to. You can make your own scrub by mixing a tablespoon of brown sugar with a tablespoon of honey, then rub it gently onto your lips with your fingertips in a circular motion. Remove with a clean, damp, muslin cloth. Never exfoliate if your lips have open wounds or are chapped.

Ideally you should try to apply lip balm multiple times every day, so keep it in your handbag, on your desk and bedside table, too. There are different types of lip products available, including:

SPF Lip Balms

The sensitive skin on your lips will easily burn in the sun, so look for products formulated with SPF15 or above to protect them from sun damage.

Classic Lip Balms

Look for products that are formulated with beeswax and petroleum jelly – they will act as a barrier, helping to seal in moisture. Many balms have lip-conditioning properties – look for moisture-rich ingredients such as cocoa butter and aloe vera, which will give your lips a much-needed moisture boost, as well as helping to soothe, nourish and protect them.

Tinted Lip Balms

If lipstick is too much for daytime, opt for a tinted lip balm for a subtle pop of colour with the added benefit of being moisturising. You could even try a product with lip-plumping benefits.

How To Treat Dry Lips

If you’re suffering with dry, sore and chapped lips, regularly apply a medicated balm, ointment or treatment to help soothe, heal and repair them. Never bite or peel off the skin as this will cause more irritation, and avoid licking your lips as this will cause lips to dry out even more.

How to Deal with Stress

How to deal with stress

Escaping from stress is easier said than done – if only you had a penny every time someone told you to ‘calm down’! So if that pep talk from you bff hasn’t helped you as much as you’d hoped, then it’s time to seek advice from the pros.

We caught up with mindfulness expert Clare Dimond, to help understand triggers and which stress relief remedies are worth investing time in. So, whether it has slowly sneaked up on you or has been sparked by a demanding work project, these top tips are here to help alleviate stress…

How to deal with stress

Ways to Help Relieve Stress

A quick google search will show you a handful of helpful ways to ‘deal’ with stress. But, before you assume that each tip will immediately melt your troubles away, it is worth keeping in mind that these actions may only help fall out of stressful thinking in the moment.

For example going on a walk, meditating or taking a yoga class might give you a temporary distraction to fall out of stressful thinking – but it’s not an instant fix and it won’t work for everyone. This can be because your stressful thinking may be with you while you’re taking the class or if you’re still stressed after the class then you may feel more wound tight that the relaxing remedy didn’t work for you.

Relief from stress will always come from letting go of stressful thoughts. And as soon as we come to realise that the stress is from the thoughts you are thinking, it can bring comfort knowing that those same thoughts can always change.

Stress & Sleep

The best way to tackle stress and any of the knock-on effects of stress, such as disrupted sleep, is to understand that stressful thoughts have no useful information in them.

We know that can be a little easier said than done, because when you wake up in the early hours of the morning it can mean that those stressful thoughts are very powerful - it’s all you can think about. In the dead quiet of the night they seem very loud and important. So at these times, remind yourself that stressful thoughts are not informative  and a they are a trick of the mind and therefore nothing to listen to. This will help you let go of those thoughts and get back to catching those zzzzz’s.

How to deal with stress

Stress-Relieving Techniques

Letting go of stressful thoughts stops them from being an issue; it really is as simple as that. We see this happen throughout the day. One minute we are completely stressed about something and in the next minute we are absorbed or distracted with something else and we have forgotten all about the stress.

There is no one-size-fits-all technique that will take away stressful thoughts. If there was, we would all be doing it and there would be no such thing as stress! There are breathing techniques, bubble baths and supplements that can help relax the mind, which can offer solace in the moment but don’t be disheartened if they don’t work for you. Just remember, the  best advice is to realise stressful feelings are always temporary.

Understanding Stress

Feelings of stress come from a perception of being under threat of something.. It is not the boss/uni workload/demanding social life creating stress – because if it was everyone would react the same way. It is simply the way we are thinking about the situation in the moment.

If we continue fixating on thoughts that stress us out (eg. my boss is criticising me) then it can develop into general anxiety. So, it’s not uncommon to experience anxiety as a symptom of stress.

There are many significant ways in which stress impacts the body which shows the incredible power that thought has in stimulating physical response.  These symptoms can include headaches, disrupted sleep, dizziness, muscle tension and shortness of breath. As the stressful thoughts go away, these symptoms may get better but if you’re continually worrying then you might remain in this state of high alert and the symptoms can continue and in some cases worsen.

How To: Unicorn Halloween Hair Tutorial

Unicorns are by far our favourite creature (we don’t care whether they’re real or not), so what better way to finish off our mythical make-up look than by coiffing locks into a perfectly formed horn? Celebrity hairstylist Dan Lynes shows you how…

1.Start by misting hair with VO5 Volume Blow-Dry spray to prep, protect and get it ready for styling. Next, create a triangular section at the front of the head, collecting hair from each temple, taking it back to a point in the centre of the head, by the crown, using the tail of a backcomb brush.

2. Tie hair into a ponytail before twisting and working the hair around the base, securing it with a grip. Using the rest of the tail, work the hair into a horn shape, misting hair with hairspray and securing with grips as you go to lock it in place. Working the shape up gradually, bend a Kirby grip to create a hook and push the horn in to secure it. Spritz with VO5 Ultimate Hold Hairspray and give it a few seconds to dry.

3. Create a high ponytail by loosely gathering hair into a high ponytail on the top of the head. Take a small section of the tail and wrap it around the base to hide the hairband and then secure with a grip.

4. To add shape and movement, take sections of the hair and wrap them around the wand. Hold for a couple of seconds and then take the wand away. Spray with coloured hairspray. Repeat using different coloured sprays until you’ve styled all of the hair. Finish with a final mist of hairspray, lifting the tail up while you spray for added volume.
