It’s Time to Mix Lipsticks: Coral and Yellow Ombre

Mix Lipsticks

Step 1: Exfoliate your lips

Using a cotton bud and lip balm, exfoliate your lips to ensure even coverage.

Mix Lipsticks

Step 2: Line your lips

Go for a lip pencil and draw around your lips. Begin by drawing an X shape on your cupid’s bow – this always helps to enhance the shape of your lips. Top Tip: Smile to stretch your lips out!

Mix Lipsticks

Step 3: Fill in your lips gently

While with darker shades you may want to fill in your lips with the lip liner completely, this time just fill in around the contour of your lips. This is because we want the yellow to pop in the middle!

Mix Lipsticks

Step 4: Apply coral lipstick

Apply coral lipstick around the edges, intensifying the hue.

Mix Lipsticks

Step 5: Grab a brush and go for yellow

To achieve a stronger tone of yellow, dab the product on to the centre of your lips using a brush. If you want a colour that’s more intense, add a few extra layers of yellow. That’s right, it’s time to dab, dab, dab!

Mix Lipsticks

Step 6: Dust translucent powder over your lips (Optional)

If you want a matte lipstick effect, apply translucent powder on top your lips. This also will help the shade to last longer.

Start by priming your eyelids and apply a beautiful nude shade all over. This will be our base colour. Follow this by a metallic brown colour. Pat this shade in up until the crease. How to Fix Makeup Mistakes

fix makeup mistakes

In a hurry and just had a makeup mishap? Not to worry, we are here to explain how to fix makeup mistakes in a matter of seconds!

How to Fix These Common Makeup Mistakes

Makeup Mistake 1: My Foundation Is Too Dark

Here’s a familiar scenario: You’ve gone to your favourite beauty shop and were 100 per cent sure you loved the foundation shade in your shopping basket… Only to find you’re not that happy with it. Not to worry, it happened to all of us! All you need to do is mix the foundation with your moisturiser to lighten the shade. You can do it on your hand or in a small jar that you can keep for future use. Apply the mix to your face with a blending sponge for a natural finish or with a foundation brush for a matt one.

Vitamin E Superdrug Vitamin E Radiance Face Cream 50ml £4.49 Buy Now
Maybelline Maybelline Brow Precise Brow Pencil Dark Blond £2.99 Buy Now

Makeup Mistake 2: Oops, I Made My Brows Too Heavy

Getting your brows just right can be a bit of a balancing act. Sometimes we might have too much fun with a pencil or gel and end up with an over-defined brow. Does this mean we have to wash it all off and start again? Not always! A quick solution can be to apply makeup remover to your blending sponge and dab, dab, dab! This will lower the intensity of your brow and leave you with a beautiful natural finish.

Makeup Mistake 3: Help, My Eyeliner Is Wonky

Not all of us can do a cateye flick in minutes, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If you gave it a shot and your cateye flick looks more like a raccoon chic, don’t despair here’s how to fix this makeup mistake. Just grab a cotton bud and some makeup remover. Gently wipe the excess off your eyelid to recreate the perfect line. When it comes to getting that eyeliner right, practice makes perfect, but this doesn’t mean you can’t look fabulous even if this is not your strongest skill!

MUA MUA Professional Loose Setting Powder £4.00 Buy Now

Makeup Mistake 4: Too Much Blusher

Sometimes you may forget to tap the excess off your blusher brush and then suddenly… You’re all covered in blusher. This has happened even to the best makeup artists out there. There’s a simple solution, simply dust over loose powder concealing the excess blusher. Yay to rosy cheeks once more!

Makeup Mistake 5: Overdrawn Lip Liner

It’s one of the trickiest steps in a makeup routine, nothing can be worse than your lip liner going wrong the very last minute. Have no fear! Simply wipe the excess off with a cotton bud and continue lining. Once you’ve lined and filled your lips, you can follow your lip line with a foundation brush for extra precision. If you still aren’t 100 per cent happy with your line, take it off with a good makeup remover and start lining your lips again. Just like with a cat eye flick, the lipliner requires practice, practice, practice.

How Can I Delay My Period?

period delay

Why does it seem that your time of the month comes around quicker than other monthly joys like pay day?! Periods can be a pain, both literally and figuratively and you can rest assured it’s going to turn up when you least want it!

Looking forward to a summer holiday? Planning on going to a festival and camping under the stars for a few days? Yup. There’s a chance your period will be there with you too!

Of course, it is not the end of the world if the two occasions coincide, but ladies, we can all admit it would be rather nice not to have to deal with it from time to time!

Luckily, there is now something we can do about it and it’s called Norethisterone.

Calendar with date marked with heart push pin and letter P. Menstruation concept. Women's personal hygiene items: pads and liners. Creative content brief 683313911.

How does Norethisterone work?

Norethisterone is a pill that you can take to delay your period which contains a synthetic form of progesterone. In your normal menstrual cycle, periods happen when your levels of oestrogen and progesterone drop. When you take Norethisterone, it extends the cycle, delaying your period.

Pretty straight forward, hey?! For Norethisterone to work effectively, you need to take the pill 3 times a day, starting 3 days before your period is due. This will delay your period until 3 days after you take your last pill.

Aim to take the pill the same time each day. We recommend setting an alarm on your phone to remind you. After all, if you’re chilling by the pool in Spain, we wouldn’t blame you for forgetting! If you do forget, you cannot double up on your next one.

You can consider Norethisterone if:

  • You want to delay your period for no more than 20 days
  • You are looking for a method to use only occasionally
  • You can predict when your period is due
  • You are NOT on the contraceptive pill
  • You are NOT pregnant
  • You are NOT experiencing abnormal bleeding
  • You do NOT have a hormone dependent cancer.
  • You have NOT suffered from jaundice or pemphigoid gestationalis during pregnancy
  • You are NOT diagnosed with porphyria
  • You are NOT allergic to anything in Utovlan/Northethisterone tablets
  • You have NO liver problems, have never suffered from angina and don’t have a history of blood clots. Find out more information here.

Are there any side effects?

As with any medication, side effects are an unfortunate possibility. We recommend you read the leaflet that arrives with your pills to fully understand what might occur or head to our website for more information.

How can I order Norethisterone?

If you feel that Norethisterone is right for you, then this is what you need to do;

Norethisterone is available through Superdrug’s Online Doctor and comes in packs of 30, 60 and 90 pills which will last for 10, 20 and 30 days.

To place an order, you will need to fill in a brief questionnaire. These questions are super important to ensure our doctors can safely determine whether or not you can take norethisterone.

Our doctors will review your order and will prescribe you a suitable treatment and that’s it! Your period delay pills will be popped in the post for you and either delivered to your home/ work address or you can pick up your order from your local Superdrug.

For more information or to place your order, visit the Superdrug Online Doctor.

Traveller’s Tummy: Causes Of Diarrhoea and How to Help Prevent It

Your holidays are finally here – let the adventure begin! However, there can be a few pesky things that can prevent you from having the time of your life, one of them being the dreaded traveller’s tummy. Read on to find out the causes of diarrhoea and how to help prevent it.

What Are the Symptoms of Diarrhoea?

Symptoms can include:

  • Loose/watery stool
  • The sudden need to run to the toilet more than 3 times in 24 hours
  • Abdominal cramps and pain
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea and feeling generally unwell

If you suffer from a high fever, blood in you diarrhoea or are in severe pain seek medical attention urgently as this could mean you have a severe infection.

Not all of the symptoms will necessarily appear. Some types of diarrhoea are mild to moderate, others are more severe. If you notice that your condition or any of the above symptoms haven’t improved in two to three days, it’s important you seek medical attention urgently. Having said that, most cases of the traveller’s tummy are likely to clear up by themselves, but you must stay vigilant as multiple episodes during one trip are possible.

Diarrhoea also results in dehydration, so make sure you drink plenty of safe water to replace the lost fluids.

What are the Causes of Diarrhoea?

When you travel, your body goes through changes. It can be a climate change, a different time zone, a complete diet change or taking part in activities you’re not used to. While a dietary change and stress can cause diarrhoea, viruses, bacteria and parasites are often frequent culprits.

You might be wondering how these bugs get into your body in the first place. This can be because you’ve eaten food that was contaminated or drank water that was unclean – even by accident. So here are our quick tips on how to help prevent traveller’s diarrhoea:

  • Always drink bottled water. If you feel your bottle has been opened before and refilled, ask for a new one. Look out for that cracking sound when opening the bottle.
  • If bottled water isn’t available water can be purified by boiling, filtering and using chlorine based tablets.
  • Say no to ice when ordering your favourite fizzy drink. You don’t know if the ice happens to be frozen water that’s been contaminated
  • Wash your hands before eating. Sometimes you may find that there isn’t a hand washing facility available, so make sure to carry hand sanitiser with you
  • Not sure if your cutlery is washed properly? Rewash it or ask for a fresh set. It might sound daunting – but better safe than sorry!

  • If you are going somewhere remote find out what prescription treatments are recommended before you jet off. Most travellers would not need antibiotics and this would only be in extreme circumstances. If appropriate for your health and trip, you can consider azithromycin or ciprofloxacin based antibiotic ‘stand-by’ treatment via Superdrug Online Doctor. You can start an online consultation here.
  • It’s always worth being extra careful in the shower to make sure you don’t accidentally swallow any water
  • If you do suffer from diarrhoea make sure you stay hydrated. For more severe symptoms or for those more likely to get dehydrated (children, elderly, pregnant women, those with other medical problems) you may want to try a hydration sachet to help replace the fluids and body salts lost through diarrhoea.

Am I Likely to Get Traveller’s Diarrhoea?

This depends on where you travel to. While travelling to Eastern Europe and the US may pose a smaller risk than travelling to Asia or the Middle East, it’s best to be careful and stay vigilant whatever your destination. Around 20-60% of those who travel to high risk destinations are likely to get traveller’s diarrhoea.

It’s worth adding that people with a weakened immune system, children, young adults, pregnant women and people with diabetes should always seek medical advice before travelling to know all the options available to them should they catch a tummy bug when travelling.

How to Choose the Best Mosquito Repellent

Do you feel like you constantly are the juiciest main course on every mosquito’s menu? Well, not anymore! We’re here with top tips and advice on how to choose the best mosquito repellent.

What Is DEET?

DEET, also known as diethyl-meta-toluamide is an active ingredient in many insect repellents. It was developed back in 1946 and to this day it is the most popular chemical in insect repelling products. This is because the effect of preventing bites can last for for 6- 8 hours (reapply after swimming) and many of us are happy with the results. Always look out for how much DEET the product contains - it is recommended that this should be a minimum of 20% and up to 50% for a longer lasting protection.

The other active ingredient used is picaridin, also known for its effectiveness however it is usually only recommended for people who are having trouble with DEET.  Always consult with the pharmacist if you have any questions.

What Are the Types of Mosquito Repellents?

Spray Mosquito Repellents

Spray mosquito repellents are some of the most popular as they are convenient and compact – which makes them perfect for when you are travelling. After a few pumps, the product is on your skin and only needs a good rub to make sure your skin is evenly covered.

Creams or Lotions

A lot of us may prefer this type of mosquito repellent as it can be more economical than the spray. This is because you are in control how much of the product you apply. After application make sure to wash your hands!

Stick and Roll-Ons

Another option is to use a roll-on or stick-on insect repellent. Both options are really easy to use and are less likely to spill if you throw them into your luggage bag.

Plug-In Devices

These tools may help to keep the insects at bay by slowly releasing a repellent into the air. They should be used as an additional to topical repellent such as DEET and not instead of.

Top Tips:

  • Speak to a Superdrug pharmacist and shop around for the best mosquito repellent for you, it is recommended to look for products that contain at least 20% DEET. Everyone is different and some people may be more attractive to insects than others.
  • To help minimise the chance of getting bitten, steer clear of ponds or small lakes where the water is still. Mosquitos can bite at any time of day depending on where you go in the world so always do your research before you go away and if in doubt, cover up.
  • Where possible book a room with air conditioning as they can help to reduce mosquito activity.
  • Mosquito nets can help keep insects at bay. Look out for ‘impregnated’ nets which have repellent on them for extra protection.
  • When travelling, always do your research and find out what insects to look out for in the country you are keen on going to. In some countries you may need to have travel vaccinations and/or anti-malaria tablets to help protect against some diseases spread by mosquitos - always speak to a healthcare professional such as a pharmacist or book a travel consultation at Superdrug if you are unsure. More information about travel advice, vaccinations and tablets can be found here.
  • If you are bitten, go for bite and sting relief spray. Don’t scratch the area as it will only irritate and damage your skin and the healing process will take longer. If you are concerned about a bite seek medical advice.
  • If possible, wear clothing that covers your arms and legs. Hats can also help minimise the chance of insects getting to your skin underneath your hair.

How to Use Highlighter

Don't you love dewy skin that simply glows? Read on to find out how to choose the right highlighter and how to apply it.

Follow our guide to find out all you need to know about choosing the right highlighter for you, as well as highlighting your features.

What is a Highlighter and What Does it Do?

Highlighters are light-reflecting products, available in liquid, cream and powder form. They enhance your complexion and give skin a brighter, dewy glow as well as making cheekbones look more prominent. They also reawaken dull or ageing skin and accentuate your favourite facial features in a subtle, natural way – they’re not meant to make you look shiny or glittery, instead they bring light to an area.

How to Apply a Highlighter

  • You can use highlighter in a number of ways: Mix in a few drops with your moisturiser of choice for an all-over, radiant glow, or apply it after your foundation with a makeup brush to cover areas you'd like to glow.
  • Start at the inner corners of your eyes to open them up, then sweep it under the arch of your brows to define and lift your brow bone.
  • Next, highlight the tops of cheekbones, blending the highlighter right up to the temples.
  • You can also apply a highlighter to your Cupid’s bow, which will give the illusion of bigger lips.
Beautiful woman and how to apply foundation and concealer with color swatches.
Isolated on white. Cut-out. For other variation, check my portfolio.

How to Get The Best From Your Features

To emphasise and get the best out of your features, use these handy tips:

  • Highlight your eyes: This will instantly light up your eyes and give a brow-lifting effect
  • Highlight your lips: Used under liptstick, this will create dimension and volume to your lips. Highlighter blended into the cupid’s bow and centre of the lips will create this effect.
  • Highlight the bridge of your nose: This will enable your nose to look narrower.

How to Blend

Blending your highlighter creates an instant radiant and even toned appearance to the skin. Once you have highlighted the areas of your face, go over each part by buffing the product into your skin using a buffing brush. Use gentle circular motions over your face and watch your makeup blend beautifully. This will create a seamless look and feel, instead of looking like makeup has been layered on top of your skin.

How to Choose the Right Highlighter for Your Skin

Choose the shade of your highlighter to suit your skin tone. If your skin is olive, opt for golden, peachy coloured highlighter, while those with fair skin should choose rosy, silver hues.

For a seamless blend, match the texture of your highlighter to your foundation, so if you’re using liquid foundation, choose a liquid formula. However, it’s important to consider what will work best on your skin type. For example, powder highlighter may not work well on dry skin types, but oily skin may welcome its mattifying effect.

Before Using Highlighter, Apply Concealer

Before you begin highlighting your face, map out the sections you want to highlight on your face using dots of concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone. Areas to map out include the forehead, under the eyes, nose and chin. This will help to create an illuminated effect.
