The Ultimate Guide to Vegan Makeup Brushes

Vegan Makeup Brushes

Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, an animal lover or simply want to embrace a cruelty-free lifestyle and living you are probably very conscious of the food and products that you buy to make sure that they comply with your values. However, one thing that you may not have considered are your makeup brushes - many of these are made with animal by-products.

To help combat this problem and provide a cruelty-free and vegan alternative there are now a fantastic range of vegan makeup brushes.

Vegan Makeup Brushes

In this article we’ll talk you through the differences between the two types and also explain the benefits of vegan brushes.

What Makes Vegan Makeup Brushes Different?

The key difference between regular makeup brushes and vegan makeup brushes are that the bristles are synthetic – meaning that they are artificially created rather than coming from an animal. Regular makeup brushes can use hair or fur from a variety of animals such as weasels, squirrels, minks, badgers, ponies or goats.

Vegan brushes on the other hand are normally made from Taklon or Nylon. Here comes the science bit: Taklon is a soft and delicate synthetic fibre derived from polyester which is pulled and tapered to an extremely fine point. Nylon is an extremely versatile fibre which is used to make a variety of items, but Nylon's robust and slightly firmer texture makes it ideal for makeup brushes.

Taklon is used when a softer texture is needed, this can be for a blush or powder brush. Nylon is used if a firmer texture is needed, this might be for a foundation or concealer brush. The great thing about synthetic fibres is that they can be blended together to get the benefit of both, a brush that is firm enough to pick up foundation but soft enough to also blend – science is cool!

The Benefits of Using Vegan Makeup Brushes

100% Cruelty-Free

Many products can claim to be cruelty-free, however it’s very difficult to know if a product is truly cruelty-free. There are many companies that state that they or their products are cruelty-free. But without proper investigation this can be a little misleading.

With makeup brushes that use synthetic bristles you can rest assured that the product is 100% cruelty-free as no animals are used throughout the entire production process.

Naturally Hypoallergenic

As there are no animal by-products present in synthetic bristles, they are hypoallergenic. This means that the risk of having an allergic reaction is minimal, this same fact also makes them great for people with sensitive skin.

Same Cost & Quality

You may have thought that synthetic brushes would cost more than regular brushes but in terms of price and quality they are practically identical. Vegan brushes are available in a range of prices so whatever your budget you’ll be able to find a brush to suit you.

Easier Clean-up

All makeup brushes should be cleaned regularly, this will not only make the brushes last longer but also help to remove any bacteria that you may end up wiping across your face if the brush isn’t cleaned. The reason animal hair or fur is more prone to harbouring bacteria is the fact that natural hair has an irregular surface which can trap a whole host of things including bacteria and chemicals. Synthetic fibres do not have these surface irregularities which make it more difficult for things to get trapped and also make them easier to clean.

Caring for synthetic brushes is a breeze. Just thoroughly clean them with an antibacterial soap or shampoo and then lay them flat to air dry.

Lastly, if you aren’t sure what brands produce vegan makeup brushes here are a few:

B. Brushes: Developed and designed by makeup artists, these makeup brushes are hand-crafted and made from synthetic fibres so are 100% vegan and cruelty-free.

How to Tackle Winter Tiredness

winter tiredness

As the nights get longer, some of us start to feel tired or fatigued. If this happens to you – don’t worry, you are not alone. Winter tiredness is common in the colder months. Here are a few proven ways that can help you tackle low energy and boost your mood and productivity.

winter tiredness

7 Ways to Beat Winter Tiredness

1. Enjoy the Outdoors In The Daytime

Not everyone can go out for a long walk in the park during office hours. However, even if you simply go outside for just ten minutes during your lunch break, it can make a big difference.

Plan in some fun activities with your friends, from weekend getaways to art or fitness classes you'd never think of going for on your own.

2. Boost Those Vitamin D Levels

Lack of sunshine in the winter months means lower levels of vitamin D. This is because our bodies are designed to get vitamin D from the sun. There are very few foods that contain it, unless it’s added. Food sources of vitamin D include oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), eggs, meat as well as certain breakfast cereals - always check the pack. The daily recommended intake is 10 micrograms of the vitamin a day. In the winter months, it can be hard to get the recommended levels, so health officials advise taking vitamin D supplements.

3. Sleep, sleep, sleep

Getting a good night’s rest is very important as this will help you feel positive and productive during the day ahead. Aim to go to sleep and wake up at the same hour every day – this will help you get at least 8 hours of sleep, which is vital for our health and wellbeing. Having said that, don’t be tempted to oversleep – sleeping too much may make us feel extra tired, sluggish and low on energy.

4. Up Those Endorphin Levels

A good workout releases endorphins, also known as happy hormones, into our bodies. Exercising regularly during winter months will make us feel more energised and positive. Any activity is beneficial – from having fun at the skating ring, skiing to a brisk and refreshing winter walk.

5. Don’t Let Stress Drain You

Stress is one of the key factors which make us feel tired and low on energy .  Look at the reasons which are causing you stress and tackle the issues at their root. Find time for yourself and employ mindfulness techniques to help you relax. Read some of our mindfulness relaxation tips here.

6. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being overweight or obese can be one of the reasons why some may feel unusually tired. If you have a concern, speak to your Pharmacist or GP, who will help you with a meal plan and tips on how to maintain a healthy weight. Generally, it's worth being mindful of your eating habits and making sure and eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

7. Is Your Room Too Hot?

It’s nice to come into a room that is warm and toasty. Sometimes, it may be tempting to crank the heating up too high. Sleeping in such a room can make us feel as if we didn’t get enough sleep, and on the other hand if the temperature is too low, you are unlikely to get a healthy rest. Studies suggest that the best temperature for a good night’s sleep is between 20-22C degrees.

Why Do I Feel Tired in Winter?

It is worth noting that winter tiredness is not the same as SAD - seasonal affective disorder also known as winter depression. Low levels of natural light in winter can lead to SAD.

Our body associates darkness with sleep mode. This is why often in winter we may start feeling sleepy even if it’s just gone 5:30pm! As nights get longer, our body produces more melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate our sleep patterns. During daytime, the signs of melatonin are practically undetectable, as it gets released into our bloodstream only when it’s night time. As darkness falls earlier in autumn and winter, our melatonin production increases, making us feel that going to sleep as soon as the sun goes down is a great idea.

Another reason why we may feel fatigued in winter is lower levels or lack of vitamin D – the sunlight vitamin. As there is less light, our bodies start feeling tired even if we really aren’t. Thankfully, there are ways of tackling this without committing a whole new lifestyle. A few minor changes can help you feel better, more productive and happier in winter.

What Will I Need?

To get ombre glitter lips you’ll need:

  • Lip Liner or Black Eyeliner
  • Lip Brush
  • Red/Crimson Lipstick
  • Glitter – you can choose from a variety of colours with Glitter Lips
  • Lip Gloss
  • Cotton Bud

Step 1: Exfoliate

Ombre Glitter Lips 1 - Exfoliate

Using a clean cotton bud, gently rub the bud back and forth between your lips to exfoliate them. This will remove any dry or dead skin leaving them feeling silky smooth

Step 2: Apply Lip Balm

Ombre Glitter Lips 2 - Apply Lip Balm

Applying lip balm to the entire lip, this will moisturise your lips helping to keep them hydrated and also provide better application for your products.

Step 3: Outline

Ombre Glitter Lips 3 - Outline

Using a dark lip liner or black eyeliner carefully outline your lips, this adds definition and when later blended will help to create the ombre effect.

Step 4: Fill In

Ombre Glitter Lips 4 - Fill In

Apply lipstick with a lip brush on the inner section of your lips, a lip brush is better to use as it allows more precise application. We don’t want to smudge the lipstick and lip liner just yet.

Step 5: Blend

Ombre Glitter Lips 5 - Blend

Now it’s time to create the ombre effect, as mentioned in our Glitter Nails article the ombre effect is basically a gradient. For this look the gradient should be from the darker outline to deep red inner lips, use the lip brush to gently blend the two colours together.

Step 6: Re-apply Red Lipstick

Ombre Glitter Lips 6 - Re-Apply Red Lipstick

To emphasise the red tone and make sure they haven’t left any parts out, go over the inner lip again with your lip brush.

Step 7: Lip Gloss

Ombre Glitter Lips 7 - Lip Gloss

Before you apply the glitter, it will need something to stick to. The best product to use is a clear lip gloss, not only will this keep your lips super smooth but the gloss acts like an adhesive.

Step 8: Glitter Glory

Ombre Glitter Lips 8 - Glitter Glory

Now it’s time for the glitter – we know you were waiting for it. Use your trusty lip brush to cover your lips with a generous coating of glitter and… lips complete!

How to Create Ombre Glitter Nails

With the party season approaching no doubt you’ll be looking to give your nails a fancy new look. It’s super simple to jazz up your nails and we’ve created a step-by-step tutorial to give your nails some extra sparkle.

What Will I Need?

To get the ombre glitter nails look you’ll need:

  • Nail file and optional cuticle stick
  • Base and top coat nail polish
  • Black nail polish
  • Glitter nail polish – gold or silver work best for this look

Step 1: File and Buff

It’s always best to start by prepping your nails, it will not only keep your nails in tip top condition but also provide better application. Start by filing the tips of your nails to get rid of any irregularities then buff the surface for a smooth finish. An option is to use a cuticle stick to gently push back your cuticles which will shape the base of your nails and make them appear longer!

Ombre Glitter Nails 1 - File and Buff

Step 2: Apply the Base Coat

Apply a base coat to all your nails, this has two benefits. Firstly, as you’re going to apply a dark colour nail polish there is the possibility that it could stain your nails. Using a base coat will provide a clear protective layer helping to prevent this from happening, secondly it help the nail polish stick and create a smooth finish.

Ombre Glitter Nails 2 - Apply the Base Coat

Step 3: Paint it Black

Over the base coat apply black nail polish, the darker the better! For complete coverage don’t be afraid to apply a second coat.

Ombre Glitter Nails 3 - Paint it Black

Step 4: Golden Glitter

Cover each nail with gold glitter nail polish, as mentioned before you can also use silver for a different effect.

Ombre Glitter Nails 4 - Golden Glitter

Step 5: Build the Layers

The ombre effect on nails is the same as with hair, the idea of ombre is to create a gradient either from light to dark or vice-versa. For our glitter nails we want the gradient to be less glitter near the cuticle and increase towards the tip. To achieve this effect once the glitter has dried apply a second coat only to the top half of the nail.

Ombre Glitter Nails 5 - Build the Layers

Step 6: Glitter the Tip

To finish of the ombre effect, once the second layer has completely dried, apply a final coat of glitter just to the tip of your nails.

Ombre Glitter Nails 6 - Glitter the Tip

Step 7: Top Coat

Last but certainly not least, apply a top coat to your nails to help prevent unwanted chipping. There you have it, ombre glitter nails in seven quick steps.

The Ultimate Guide to Protein For Women

lady in kitchen mixing a protein shake

Protein powders have become a fitness buzzword. Does your body really need them and what are the benefits of taking them? We debunk all the myths in this girl’s guide to protein.

lady in kitchen mixing a protein shake

Why do we need protein?

It’s important to remember that our body doesn’t exclusively require protein. Focusing on a nutritious and balanced diet is key - this includes carbohydrates, fibre, minerals, fats as well as protein.

Protein is what our muscles, blood, skin and hair is made of. Your body uses it to repair itself, build tissue, produce hormones, enzymes as well as other chemicals within our bodies. Not eating enough protein may result in a slow metabolism, fatigue, slow healing wounds, low immunity among many others.

What are the different types of protein powders?

The most common types of protein powders are whey, soy and casein – the most widely used of which is whey as it is water-soluble milk protein. This means that you can mix it with water or you can add it into a smoothie, it’s very versatile.

Do I need extra protein?

Generally you can get your recommended daily intake of protein by leading a healthy lifestyle and focusing on a balanced diet with meat, fish, poultry and pulses such as peas, beans and lentils on the menu. Depending on our lifestyle and life stage, we need a varying amount of protein. You might want to consider including protein shakes in your diet if:

  • You are a teen and you are still growing and developing
  • You are starting on a vegan or vegetarian diet, and are not getting enough protein from your diet.
  • You’ve just started a workout programme and are keen on starting to build muscle
  • You are going into an advanced workout routine – imagine you’ve signed up for a charity run, a half marathon or even a marathon!
  • If you suffered an injury – protein can help aid the healing process

How much protein do I need?

This doesn’t mean that protein shakes should replace meals or that they should be over-used. Too much protein can be harmful for our kidneys and may put stress on your heart. While everyone’s protein intake should be different, depending on their age and weight, according to The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake), an average man should take 56 grams per day and a woman - 46 grams per day. This equates to roughly 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.

Evaluate your situation and see if you actually need more protein in your diet. If you feel generally fatigued after workouts, you notice that it takes you overly long to heal and that your metabolism has slowed down, a protein shake may be just the right thing for you.

Two ladies sitting on steps outside a house drinking protein shakes

When should I take protein?

While a lot of gym goers prefer to take pure protein shakes to their workouts, it is recommended that you drink protein shakes mixed with carbohydrates. This is because before and after workouts your body is craving carbohydrates as well as protein.

If you like to drink your protein shake around your trip to the gym, make sure the ration of carbohydrates is much higher than protein.

Food sources of protein

  • Beef
  • Eggs
  • Bone broth protein
  • Salmon, mackerel, tuna and other wild fish
  • Pulses such as Peas, Beans and Lentils
  • Organic chicken
  • Milk
  • Cheese, especially Swiss, Parmesan, low fat Cheddar, and Cottage Cheese

Will I look bulky if I drink protein shakes?

This is a very common myth. The intensity, type and frequency of your workouts paired with your diet are what can make you look bulky rather than just protein shakes.

B. Skincare: The Whole Truth and Nothing but the Truth

B. Skincare Phase 1

We're so much wiser to advertising these days, and it seems like every time you look there's a new skincare brand on the block with even bigger and bolder claims than before. To be perfectly honest, we’ve grown rather cynical about it all.

B. Skincare is no different when it comes to bold claims, but thankfully, their amazing skincare scientists are whizzes at breaking down the science and explaining it all in layman’s terms for us mere mortals. So what are the claimd and how do they stack up? We delve into B. Skincare’s targeted ranges to find out.

B. Confident, Skin Phase One – For Your Late 20s & 30s

Weary commuters and party girls alike, rejoice! The Phase One range is designed to protect against the first signs of ageing caused by environmental exposure and intense lifestyle (it turns out there is such a thing as too much partying).

The Claims

  • With ingredients derived from plants, the range offers “skin-shield” technology to provide protection whilst allowing skin to breathe
  • Intense moisturisation is on offer thanks to hero ingredient Hyaluronic Acid, which holds more water than any other natural substance

The Results

Skin is 42% more hydrated after just one application of B. Confident Day Cream – even after 12 hours.

91% of users agreed that skin looked and felt healthier and moisturized using B. Confident Day Cream twice a day for 4 weeks.

B. Skincare Phase 1

B. Skincare Phase 2

B. Radiant, Skin Phase Two – From Your Late 30s

When you look in the mirror and start to notice fine lines forming around your eyes and mouth, and a lack of radiance in your complexion – don’t panic.  Firstly, remember that laughter lines are a sign of a life well lived.  Secondly, it’s time to introduce you to Phase 2 Skincare from B.

The Claims

  • Natural ingredients like Olive Leaf and Jujube Seed extract make skin more radiant
  • Tetrapeptide-21 boosts collagen production and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

The Results

B. Radiant Night Cream continues to hydrate the skin by 73% after 12 hours with just one application.

Skin was noticeably smoother and more supple (with 87% saying the cream made their complexion brighter) using B. Radiant Night Cream for four weeks.

B. Restored, Skin Phase Three – From Your Late 40s

As collagen and elastin naturally present in the skin begin to break down, you’ll find your wrinkles appear deeper – so to counteract it, B. ramp up the levels of Hyaluronic Acid in the Phase Three Range.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

A natural polymer that body produces, Hyaluronic Acid can hold 700 times its own weight in water – more than any other naturally occurring substance – which makes it the ideal component in intense moisturisation.

The Claim

  • High levels of peptides encourage the skin’s natural production of collagen
  • A bespoke formulation which has been proven to reduce the appearance of line and wrinkles

The Results

An independent Clinical Skin Profilometry Study found that B. Restored Peptide Rich Elixir reduced the appearance of deep wrinkles by 12%!

Plus, women using the B. Restored Serum twice daily for four weeks said their skin was lifted and firmed, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles was reduced.

B. Skincare Phase 3

B. Skincare Phase 4

B. Nourished, Skin Phase Four – For Your Late 50s & 60s

When you reach your late 50s, fine lines are a thing of the past, as wrinkles become deeper and more determined, and skin can begin to sag and look dull. On the flip side, you’re probably happier, wealthier and more comfortable in your own skin than ever before – lucky you!

The Claim

  • A cocktail of highly effective ingredients including Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38 and Plantain stem cells boost collagen, and smooth wrinkles
  • Skin is brightened thanks to radiance boosting Vitamin B3 and Spanish Needle extract

The Results

92% said using the regime from the B. Nourished range left their skin feeling firmer.

98% said it brightened their complexion.

87% said it reduced the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Our Verdict

If all that hasn’t left you convinced, we don’t know what will!  Once you decide your regime, B. also offers a range of All Phase products - targeted solutions using the latest in skincare technology.  Designed to fix specific problems, these solutions sit alongside your Skin Phase collection with the same extraordinary results.

And don’t forget, the whole collection has been tested on real women through independent clinical trials and consumer use studies – and it’s dermatologically approved and suitable for vegans too.

B. Skincare - it works.  Seriously.

All statistics were taken from independent clinical trials and independent consumer use studies.

How to Make Your Own Lip Scrub

As the winter months approach, it’s not only our skin that needs some additional care – our lips too will benefit from some extra attention. Lip scrubs or exfoliators can help create a smooth smile, and the best part is that they are affordable, and you can even make them at home.

Cropped shot of a woman licking her lips covered in sugarhttps://

What are the benefits of using lip scrub?

When our lips get dry, they start looking flaky and unhealthy. This is because we lose more moisture through our lips than any other body part.

Using a lip scrub is one of the ways you can combat this.

Exfoliating lips regularly means that you will take dead skin off, giving way to fresh layers.

This will not only make your lips look smooth and healthy, but also ensure that your lip liner and lipstick last longer.

How to Use Lip Scrubs?

It’s best to use a lip scrub two to three times per week, depending on the condition of your lips. Simply apply the scrub either with your finger or a cotton bud, rub your lips and take off with a cotton pad or tissue. Follow up with a moisturiser or lip balm. You can use lip scrubs either in the evening or in the morning.

Easy Homemade Lip Scrub Recipes

There are many lips scrub recipes out there and you can even make your own variation by adding flavours or even spices that you like most. Remember, the key to lip scrubs is to have an exfoliator and nourishment within the ingredients.
