Happy feet: Caring for your feet

We take our feet for granted and they are often forgotten when it comes to beauty regimes. From being squeezed into high heels or spending long days inside nylon tights or socks, there are a number of challenges our feet have to go through on a daily basis.

The young woman washes and cleans the beautiful well-groomed legs in water by means of a clearing brush

Follow these helpful tips on how to care for your feet and keep them happy!

Wash & Dry Well

The skin on our feet is naturally dry and can be made worse by anything from tight shoes, indoor heating and certain medical conditions. What many people don’t realise is that soaking your feet can actually dehydrate them, causing skin to become drier particularly on the heels. Instead of a long soak, massage an intensive foot scrub on your feet 2 -3 times a week, leaving it on for 5 minutes before rinsing off well with warm water. This will help to remove dead skin cells and help smooth the feet.

Ensure that you dry feet well, especially in-between toes to avoid getting a fungal infection like Athlete’s Foot.

Heels tend to dry out more than the rest of the foot as a lot of pressure gets applied to the heel on a daily basis. Dry skin can lead to cracking which can be painful so it’s important to keep your feet moisturised paying particular attend to the thicker skin on your heels.

For best results, apply oils or moisturisers straight after showering and before bed. Avoid applying moisturiser in-between the toes as these areas should be dry at all times. Instead sprinkle a little talcum in between toes to help keep skin dry and avoid any infections.

Body Care

Cutting toenails

It’s important to keep toenails trimmed. Nails should be cut when they’re dry, so cut them after you have showered and dried your feet properly. Using appropriate toenail clippers or manicure scissors, cut straight across the nail, never cut the nail rounded or too short as this could cause ingrown toenails.. File the nail after cutting to smooth the edges. For extra special treatment to your feet, give yourself a pedicure at home.

Wearing High heels

They look great and make your legs appear longer but high heels can also lead to the development of bunions which can over time become rather painful. There are a couple of things you can do to alleviate these symptoms such as:

  • Buying insoles will support the arch of your feet while walking.
  • Insoles are also great when exercising or running as they provide support for the knees as well as feet.
  • Stretch your legs and feet before and after wearing your heels
  • Buy shoes which are the correct size for your feet. If in doubt, get your feet measured

Choosing an Electric Foot File

Your feet will benefit by using an electronic foot file as they buff away rough dry skin, and remove dead skin cells leaving you with baby soft skin. The electronic rolling motion allows quick and easy use. Many devices come with an option of a removable head for varying levels of skin toughness. Course rollers will remove thick calluses, and most rollers are anti-bacterial which can be replaced.

How to use

Whether you chose an electrical or a manual foot buffer it’s always best to learn how to use them properly first:

  1. Always use on prepared clean and dry feet.
  2. Glide the roller over hard skin and allow the roller to gently work its magic; pressing too hard will make the device stop.
  3. Repeat the process until your feet are feeling super soft and smooth.
  4. After use remember to moisturise there are plenty of foot care products from which to choose.

Preventing Foot Odor

The bacteria which thrive in the moist environment of your shoes is the cause of unpleasant, smelly feet. Try using baby powder in your shoes before wearing them which will help soak up any moisture and odors. Wearing clean socks everyday will also help!

Using a Pumice Stone every few days whilst you’re in the shower will remove any dead skin as well as prevent any bacteria from developing, leaving your feet feeling soft, supple and happy.

Our Summer detox tips will help your mind and body to feel its absolute best for the holidays.  Get ready to hit the reset button!

Group of beautiful young women strolling on a beach. Three friends walking on the beach and laughing on a summer day, enjoying vacation.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s body is different and reacts in different ways to changes so be mindful of what you think your body will be able to handle. These recommendations should ideally be started a couple of weeks before your holiday and are also work for a post holiday detox!

Tip 1 – Hydrate

Start each day with a glass of room temperature water with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to flush the system.  The vitamin C  in the lemon juice will give your immune system a boost and helps improve digestion by loosening toxins in your digestive tract. You should aim to drink at least 2 litres of water throughout the day.

Tip 2 – Body Brush Pre Shower

Did you know that a third of your body’s toxins are emitted through your skin? A healthy lymphatic system is key to removing these toxins from the body. Dry body brushing is the best way to 'clean' your lymphatic system which in turn improves the removal of toxins from the body.

Body brushing should be done before a shower and ideally in the morning as toxins are built up during sleep. Brush the entire body by starting at the feet and slowly moving towards the heart. It should take about 5 minutes. A long handled brush is useful for all those hard to reach areas of your body.

Tip 3 – Alternate shower temperature

Switching from hot and cold temperatures whilst showering is extremely beneficial for the body and general health. The cold water will trigger the flow of circulation to be directed inward towards the internal organs. The hot water will then direct the flow of circulation outwards again to the skin. To move the flow of circulation in and out is great as it unblocks any static flow, increases the rate of detoxification and also moves essential nutrients to parts of the body.

Tip 4 – Exercise

Whatever your favourite form of exercise is, whether it’s walking, Pilates or an intense workout at the gym – keep doing it! It’s important to keep your body moving throughout the detox process as it will help to keep your lymphatic system flowing and in turn remove the toxins from the body.

Green tea

Tip 5 – Go herbal/Go organic

If you’re an avid fan of coffee, during detox limit yourself to one cup per day. The best alternative when trying to detox are herbal teas such as green or jasmine teas. Peppermint or ginger tea are perfect in-between meals as they speed up the process of digestion.

Eating right during a detox is also very important, you don't want to be putting all those nasty toxins back into your body! Eat plenty of fruit and veg and try and opt for organic foods which contain fewer pesticides.

Introduction to Colour Chalks and Sprays

Hair chalks and sprays are perfect if you want to add a little colour to your tresses without the long term commitment. Hair chalks or ‘chalk hair dye’ are similar to the soft chalk pastels that you might have used as a kid and can be easily washed out. It’s best to look for specific hair chalks which are designed to be used on your hair and won’t contain any of the harsh chemicals you might find in artists pastels.

Hair chalks allow you to create many different looks. Apply just to the ends of the hair for an ombre effect, on single strands to create coloured highlights or all over if you are feeling brave!

Hair chalk for your hair colour

Subtle pastels or bright, bold neons, the colour choices for hair chalk are endless but the final effect will vary depending on your hair colour.

You can use any hair chalk colour with brunette hair. Blues, pinks, greens and reds work well - lucky you!

Pastel chalk colours look great on blondes and blend well with the soft tones.

If you have black hair, then opt for bright or neon colours so they stand out and make the hair pop.

This will depend on what shade of red your hair is.  You can experiment with any colour - try turquoise or purple!

Tip: If you’re looking for a bright and bold look, you can always try applying white chalk to hair first and then going over it with the colour of your choice to really make the colour pop.

How to Use Hair Chalks

Hair chalk can be applied to dry or wet hair but can stain blonde hair. If you’re fair haired it’s best to apply the chalk when hair is dry unless you are happy for the colour to last a few days! Whatever your hair colour you should always try the chalks on dry hair first and if the colour isn’t showing up you can use a little water.

  1. Separate out the strands of hair you want to apply colour to (about an inch for each strand). You can use grips or pins if you have a lot of hair.
  2. If using on wet hair, slightly dampen a strand of hair (a spray bottle is useful for this). Don’t soak the hair as too much water will make the final colour less vibrant.
  3. Rub the chalk down the hair, you risk breaking your hair if you rub up! Twist the hair as you apply the chalk as it helps intensify the colour.
  4. Dust off any excess powder before moving onto the next strand.
  5. Allow to air dry and avoid brushing your hair now the colour has been applied
  6. To ‘seal’ the colour you can run a straightener or hair curler over the hair and mist with hair spray.
  7. When you want to remove the colour, shake your hair or brush out the chalk before shampooing.

How to Apply Hair Chalk Sprays

Hair chalk is also available as a spray and is even easier to use than hair chalks. Simply shake the can and holding 15cm from your hair spray onto individual strands of clean, dry hair. Don’t apply to wet hair as the colour will be blotchy! Again fix the colour with hair spray.

Other coloured hair sprays might be slightly different to chalk sprays so always read the instructions.

Top Tips

  • Hair chalks can be messy so wear old/protective clothing and gloves and cover any surfaces such as sides and floors with paper
  • If you don’t plan on washing the colour out before bed, use an old pillow as colour will transfer onto material
  • Make sure your hair is free of any products before applying the hair chalk to ensure it adheres to the hair
  • Don’t blow dry your hair after applying as you will lose some of the colour
  • Blondes may find that they need to wash their hair a couple of times before colour is properly rinsed out
  • Hair chalks can dry out hair so if you have particularly dry or damaged hair save hair chalks for special occasions and apply an intense mask to hair once washed out

Glitter Lips – Drink, Kiss & Party Proof‎

What is it? We hear you say- Its Glitter for your Lips!

You may find your makeup routine is becoming repetitive and in need of a splash of glamour, so we have found the perfect solution for this. Glitter Lips by Beauty Boulevard provides a statement look with easy application and long lasting effects.

Get a dramatic look – hassle free.

With just one application Glitter Lips can last up to 8 hours! Every colour provides high impact, durability and is both water and smudge proof, so you can enjoy your night out on the town without losing any sparkle.

Each of the 10 shades including Ruby Slippers and Diamond in the Buff provide 25 applications for you to wear time and time again.

How to Apply Glitter Lips

Apply your base makeup first – Glitter Lips should be the last product you use on your face.

  1. Ensure your lips are clean and dry, start by using a sharp lip liner to draw around your lip shape. This will act as a guideline as to where you would like the glitter to be applied.
  2. Apply the gloss bond to your lips - this acts as a base for the glitter to stick to and will keep the glitter in place. Carefully cover all of your lip including the corners and bow of your lip. Your lips should now be fully glossed!
  3. To begin adding the sparkle, dip the brush into the glitter pot and tap on the side of the pot to shake off any excess glitter. This will also help for more efficient application. You can always add more after for thicker, bolder layers.
  4. Covering all glossed areas of your lips, use a dabbing motion to apply the glitter. Press the sponge onto your lips and release gently.

Tip: Don’t worry if you get glitter outside the glossed areas as you can easily brush this off with a large blusher brush after full application.

  5. Lastly, using the same dabbing motion, pat along your lips with your finger to ensure any areas the brush couldn’t reach are covered.

While doing this, if patches feel sticky from the gloss apply more glitter to these areas.

How to Remove Glitter Lips

Removal of your Glitter Lips is just as easy as the application. To do this you will need:

  • A cotton pad
  • Oil based make-up remover
  1. Begin by applying a few drops of an oil based makeup remover to the pad and flatly press this over your lips. Hold onto the lips for a few seconds to allow the oil to penetrate through the glitter and the gloss bond. Try to not hold for too long as lips may become sore.
  2. Using a circular motion wipe the glitter and gloss off your lips until completely removed,  your lips should now be back to their original state.

Tip: If you find that your lips feel dry or sore, apply a lip balm or moisturiser to replenish any moisture that may have been lost.

Heatproof Your Makeup: 6 Ways to Beat the Heat

Heatproof Makeup

Sweat can wreak havoc with your makeup on a hot day. So much like your summer wardrobe you’ll need to choose makeup that’ll keep you looking fresh when it hots up. Follow these sizzling tips to make sure that you avoid a total melt down. Literally.

Heatproof makeup GIF

1. Always Remember to Prime

So, we may not be able to avoid sweating when the sun beats down. But, we can help to minimise the shine. How? By applying a primer before loading up with our makeup look. Not only will this maximise the longevity of makeup but it will also help keep unwanted shine at bay. We want 'dewy' not 'slippery'.

2. Minimise the Morning Routine

To avoid clogging pores keep your pre–makeup regime minimal, less is definitely more! Using a cleanser and a light moisturiser will be enough - cut back on the 10-step ritual or save that for the evening. Remember to check that your moisturiser contains SPF for added protection against the sunny elements. If not, add sunscreen into the mix.

Heatproof Makeup

3. Light, Bright Makeup

Whilst you are keeping skincare light it is worth considering lighter makeup too. Opt for a sheer formula as this will allow your skin to breath. If you feel this isn’t providing enough coverage use a concealer or a thin layer of tinted moisturiser over the top.

If you fancy adding a touch of colour pick one area to accentuate and go bold!

4. Make it Waterproof

Waterproof mascaras can be a God-send in the heat as moisture can cause mascara to run. Panda eyes are definitely not a beauty look you want to be rocking! If you prefer to use your normal mascara apply a top coat of waterproof mascara to help increase its staying power.

5. Go Gloss

During warmer weather it makes sense to put your lipstick to one side in favour of lip gloss. These are lighter and won’t rub off at the first sign of moisture. Lip gloss is also easier to reapply during the day while out and about. If you want to go for a traditional summer look choose pink or peach shades or if you are feeling more daring opt for a tangerine or grape hue.

6. Keep Oily Skin at Bay

Heat increases the production of sebum so can make oily skin oilier than usual. If you want to avoid too much shine and maintain a sun- kissed glow pop some blotting papers in your bag. These handy sheets will absorb sweat and oil from your skin without the need to retouch your makeup.
