Introduction

Superdrug recognises the importance, value and benefits of managing our business sustainably. As a result this Sustainability Policy sets the framework for Superdrug's commitment to environmental good practice, social responsibility and economic prosperity.

This publicly available policy applies to all our activities. It establishes our sustainability objectives and will be regularly reviewed.

Progress on meeting these objectives will be reviewed and reported annually to ensure continual improvement of our sustainability goals.

Superdrug is committed to complying with and where practical exceeding all legislation applicable to our business. We will also comply with industry codes of conduct where applicable.

Economic Prosperity

Social Responsibility

We deliver throughout the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland, Isle of Anglesey, Isle of Wight, Scilly Isles and The Scottish Islands). Customers are advised that express delivery is not available for orders from the Channel Islands.

Customers are also advised that we are unable to send aerosols or flammable products to Northern Ireland addresses.

Unfortunately we do not currently deliver overseas.

Employee Policy

Superdrug recognises the importance, value and benefits of managing our business sustainably. As a result this Employee Policy demonstrates our commitment to our employees as we recognise that the successful integration of sustainability into our operations requires the input from all aspects of the business and our employees can help deliver these goals.

We will strive for continual improvement in this area and report our progress on implementing this policy to the management board on an annual basis. We will provide feedback to our employees on our progress in operating the business more sustainably on a regular basis.

The key employee related objectives in our sustainability policy are to engage and communicate with our employees on sustainability issues and to provide an enjoyable workplace for them.

Charity

  • Giving back to the communities in which we serve is a key vision. We will support our employees in their volunteer efforts.
  • In 2011 we will survey our employees on ways in which we are able to help employees donate to charities.
  • During 2011 we will review the option to include ethical funds as part of our pensions investment approach.

Communication and Training

  • We will provide the opportunities for our employees to communicate their ideas on our sustainability policy and objectives.
  • We will provide relevant training and education where appropriate to all employees on sustainability focusing on energy efficiency, waste and transport.
  • We will work with our employees in developing training material for employee training on sustainability.

Working environment

  • We are committed to our equal opportunities and diversity policy which is in our policies and procedures manual. The company will provide all employees with a welcome to Superdrug booklet for their area of the business on starting with the company and access to the company's policies and procedures manual in their workplace.
  • We will provide a healthy working environment for our employees in which to work through material selection and well maintained equipment.

Employee Travel

  • By the end of 2011, we will provide priority parking spaces for car sharers at our all offices and distribution centres.
  • We will promote car sharing among employees for meetings and commuting, through promoting a liftshare day initiative monthly.
  • We will support a remote/ home working policy for our employees where agreed with line management.
  • We will offer travel season ticket loans to all employees based in our Croydon Head Office and also to our field based employees.

Procurement Policy

This procurement policy underpins the aspirations of Superdrug's Sustainability Policy and sets specific objectives for us as retailers to consider the social, environmental and economic impacts of all our procurement activities.

We are committed to understanding and managing the environmental and social impacts of our operations, including the procurement of goods and services.

All employees are responsible for ensuring that procurement activities within their business areas are carried out in accordance with the appropriate financial and legal regulations.

We will strive for continual improvement in this area and report on our progress in implementing this policy to the management board on an annual basis.

Suppliers

  • In 2011 we will develop a supplier evaluation questionnaire that includes questions on sustainability. From late in 2011 this will be issued with all tenders, over £100,000 in value, requesting information on an organisation's own actions to reduce its environmental impacts.
  • We will meet with at least 3 of our large suppliers to discuss the outcomes of the evaluation during 2012.
  • From 2012 we will encourage the manufacturers of our own brand products to develop an environmental policy and implement an environmental management system.
  • We will encourage our suppliers to adopt practices that reduce their environmental impact.
  • Superdrug operates an international procurement strategy. We will continue to work with our global partners to review the procurement strategy and ensure that environmental criteria are considered. In 2011 we will develop a tool which considers the lifecycle of products purchased for use in our stores and offices.
  • We encourage all suppliers to sign up to Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) code of conduct regarding ethical working practices. We will undertake regular audits of all our suppliers in high risk countries, as defined by BSCI.
  • We will undertake an energy assessment two of own brand product manufacturers by the end of 2011.

Products

  • We will review the environmental policies of manufacturers and sustainability credentials of our supplied own brand products. All retail products that use either wood or composite wood products in their manufacture will use internationally recognised certified wood products e.g. FSC or PEFC, from 2012.
  • By 2011 our own brand retail products will only use paper and card which is made either from recycled paper products or from internationally recognised certified wood sources.

Premises

  • We will develop environmental best practice guidelines for the design and construction of all new stores and refurbishment of existing stores by 2011
  • We will specify materials with a high recycled content and those that are easily reused or recycled at the end of their useful life.
  • We specify only low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) water based paints for use in our stores, offices and distribution centres.
  • Our preference will be to purchase or lease equipment or products which carry a recognised environmental label, whenever possible.
  • Review energy performance and life cycle costs when procuring energy consuming equipment.

Social Policy

Superdrug recognises the importance, value and benefits of managing our business sustainably. As a result this social policy sets the framework for issues related to Superdrug's commitment to social responsibility.

We will strive for continual improvement in this area and report on our progress in implementing this policy to the management board on an annual basis.

The main social objectives in our sustainability policy are to engage on sustainability issues with our employees, customers, suppliers and the communities in which we serve. We also seek to operate our business in an ethical and non discriminatory manner. In our social policy these issues are realised through the following objectives.

Ethical

  • We will lobby government to reduce Value Added Tax on products we believe to be essential to our customers health
  • We will continue to ensure that our own brand cosmetics, toiletries and household ranges carry the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection BUAV leaping bunny logo which means they have not been tested on animals by Superdrug or our manufacturers.
  • We encourage all our suppliers to sign up to Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) code of conduct regarding ethical working practices.

Charitable

  • We will support some key charities that our employees and customers are concerned with, through fund raising and supporting our employees in their volunteer efforts.
  • In particular we will continue our support of charities that work on skin cancer campaigns especially teenage cancer charities.

Community Engagement

  • We will continue to work with our long term partners to support young people through fund raising, employee involvement and job opportunities.
  • We are committed to our equal opportunities and diversity policy which is in our policies and procedures manual.
  • We will provide the opportunities for our customers to communicate their ideas on our sustainability policy and objectives.
  • We provide induction loops to assist people that are hearing impaired and copies of our terms and conditions and returns policy in large print for people who are visually impaired.

Transport Policy

Superdrug recognises the importance, value and benefits of managing our business sustainably. Our Sustainability Policy sets the framework for Superdrug's commitment to environmental good practice, social responsibility and economic prosperity. As part of that commitment we recognise the impacts that transportation has, both in terms of our operations and travel by our employees and customers.

We will strive for continual improvement in this area and report on our progress in implementing this policy to the management board on an annual basis.

Our primary transport objectives in our sustainability policy are to review how we manage our logistics, to develop and implement a green travel plan for our employees.

Logistic Operations

  • Driver trainers will receive SAFED refresher training every 3 years. These employees will train all Superdrug logistic drivers on an annual basis.
  • By the end of 2010, we will implement a driver performance programme to track emissions arising from logistics services to improve driver performance by 10%.
  • Current levels of emissions from our transport will not be exceeded and we will annually review the potential savings. The 2011 target is to improve overall fuel consumption to 10.2mpg.
  • To increase the number of sloping twin deck trailers to 100% of the fleet by the end of 2012.
  • Fleet replacement program - to ensure all new fleet comes equipped with Euro 5 specification engines.
  • We will report annually on fuel use per tonne of goods transport per miles travelled for our operations.
  • We will develop and distribute a good driving hints and tips guide for all company car drivers by 2011.

Travel by employees

  • In 2011 we will develop our internal processes to monitor emissions arising from employee business travel. This will give visibility of the Green House Gases (GHGs) from air travel, train travel, car mileage (company/lease, own, etc), taxi travel.
  • To monitor the carbon savings from use of the point to point Video Conferencing facility between our Head Office and Dunstable (Southern) Distribution Centre.
  • To encourage our employees and visitors to use public transport, we will provide local travel information in all offices and distribution centres.
  • We will encourage the use of alternatives to taxis from our East Croydon HQ.
  • From 2011 our company car policy will set minimum miles per gallon (mpg) performance for all leased cars at the time of renewal.
  • Superdrug will, as far as is practicable, provide secure on-site cycle parking facilities at all our offices and distribution centres with an aim to provide sheltered cycle storage facilities in close proximity to the office entrance.
  • From 2011, we will provide fuel efficient driver training for our high mileage employees.

Travel by our customers

  • We will consider transport links for our customers when reviewing potential store sites.
  • We will make public transport information on locating all our stores available to our customers through our website by 2011.

Waste Policy

Superdrug recognises the importance, value and benefits of managing our business sustainably. Our Sustainability Policy sets the framework for Superdrug's commitment to environmental good practice, social responsibility and economic prosperity. About 5.9million tonnes of packaging waste are generated in the UK each year (www.wrap.org.uk/retail/drivers_for_change/index.html) therefore part of our sustainability commitment involves how we deal with issues surrounding waste generation, management and disposal.

The main waste objectives in our sustainability policy are to reduce the waste generated by working with our suppliers and distributors and identify the most suitable opportunities for recycling waste materials ensuring their safe disposal. In our waste policy these objectives are realised through the following objectives.

Waste Management

  • We will undertake regular waste audits at stores, offices and distribution centres to regularly reassess the quantities of waste generated. From these audits we will review the opportunities for waste reduction and to maximise recycling.
  • We will provide effective communication to our staff on waste management including waste identification guidance.
  • We will provide adequate training on waste management for staff who handle different types of waste.
  • We will ensure storage facilities are suitable for the types of waste that are generated.
  • All types of waste to be placed into the correct containers which will be stored at designated waste areas to comply with duty of care and fire safety requirements.
  • Waste management figures will be documented and reported on an annual basis from all parts of the business.

Our Suppliers

  • We will encourage our own brand product suppliers to use less packaging materials and use materials which are more easily recycled.
  • Superdrug will seek opportunities to reduce waste by working with suppliers to streamline packaging of goods sold in our stores
  • For construction, renovation or refit projects we will specify that contractors are to divert 50% of waste generated from landfill from 2011.

Our Customers

  • We will continue to work to reduce the number of plastic bags given to customers and provide only biodegradable bags on the phase out of offering plastic bags to customers.
  • We will continue to include our on-pack recycling (www.onpackrecyclinglabel.org.uk) information to enable customers to recycle our product packaging more easily.

Our Operations

  • In our offices we will provide more recycling bins and fewer general waste bins to enable staff to recycle more easily.
  • We will seek opportunities to reduce significant material use.
  • Encourage the re-use of materials and use of those with a high recycled content.
  • We will monitor the use of printing paper look to reuse paper where possible before it is recycled.

Low Carbon Energy Policy

Superdrug understands the demand to address rising greenhouse gas emissions and take actions for their reduction. As part of our ongoing commitment to monitor and reduce our emissions we will review low carbon measures and allocate appropriate resources to achieve our objectives and targets.

Our Low Carbon Objectives are

  • Emissions - We will seek to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from our activities through the development and implementation of specific action plans.
  • Energy - We will implement energy efficient measures throughout our stores and offices.
  • Transport - We will review how we manage our logistics and work with our staff to reduce the impact of business travel.
  • Procurement - We will review the environmental policies of manufacturers and sustainability credentials of the products we use in our operations.

Our Low Carbon Targets are

  • To annually review our progress towards achieving the targets set out in this policy and the objectives of the sustainability policy.
  • To publish the Low Carbon Energy Policy publicly.
  • To gain accreditation to Carbon Trust Standard in 2011 and ensure we maintain this accreditation year on year.
  • To undertake a review of our current energy management structure in 2011.
  • To begin implementing the outcomes of the energy management review in our head office, distribution centres and stores during 2011.
  • To install automatic meter reading for electricity consumption in all our stores by the end of 2011.
  • Starting in 2011 we will engage with designated staff and establish energy specific key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Review our monitoring and targeting programme annually.
  • During 2011 we will begin the pilot implementation of a new monitoring and targeting programme in 10% of our stores.
  • To publicly report our energy and emissions performance and KPIs annually.
  • To achieve a 5% reduction in 2008 carbon dioxide emissions relative to net sales floor area (tCO2/m2) by the end of 2012.
