Back To The 1980’s – Here Comes The ‘Sun In’

As Spandau Ballet gets ready to return to the stages of Britain, Superdrug is planning its own 1980’s revival by resurrecting Sun In; the archetypal 80’s hair product.

Sun In promises to lighten and brighten medium brown to blonde hair mimicking the natural lightening effect of the sun by simply spraying onto damp hair. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley of Wham were the iconic Sun In boys – the product was especially popular with men looking for blonder hair.

In its 1980s heyday Sun In was stocked in all Superdrug stores, however as sales diminished Superdrug took the decision to discontinue the product last year as customers were choosing to use the new professional style Performance highlighting kit (£3.71) instead.

While women are happy to tackle highlighting at home with a reliable kit, the 1980s revival combined with the recession has seen male customers looking for an every easier way to get a ‘holiday hair’ look. Dan (no relation to Tony) Hadley, Superdrug hair colourant buyer said: “We’ve found that while our female customers love our home highlighting kits which help them save hundreds of pounds a year, our male customers want the retro look, and ease, of using Sun In. We have received around 100 emails and calls from men asking us bring back Sun In this summer.

“We’re delighted to announce we will be bringing back Sun In and the product will be reintroduced to stores in June – in plenty of time to get the true 1980s look before the Spandau Ballet tour.” In a celebration of His ‘N Hers beauty in true 1980’s style Sun In will be placed next to the Performance Highlighting Kit on Superdrug’s shelves this summer.
