Thinking of trying out a gel eyeliner? It might just become your new go-to beauty essential. Follow our steps and find out how to apply it, as well as what makes gel eyeliners different from all the rest.
What Makes Gel Eyeliners Different?
Gel eyeliners are loved for their versatility. You can achieve a razor-sharp cat eye or cut crease look with maximum staying power, as well as a smokey eye. This versatility is exactly what makes gel eyeliners unique as you can only achieve one or the other with a kohl pencil or liquid eyeliner. Having said that, each of the products have their dedicated fan bases.
Top Tip: Try lining your eye with each type of eyeliner: Kohl pencil, liquid or gel. This way you will be able to figure out what product you like using the most. Some find liquid eyeliner easiest to use, some prefer kohl , some go for gel, and some love using all three types depending on the look they want to achieve.
How to Apply Gel Eyeliner?
Step 1: Make sure your eyelids are cleansed
Add eye makeup remover to a cotton pad and swipe quickly across your eye lids. Doing so will make sure your eye lid is clean without any leftover makeup or excess oil.
Step 2: Apply primer
Priming your eye lid is important as this will improve the eyeliner’s staying power. This will also make eye shadow last longer, if you are planning to apply some as well.
Step 3: Get the right brush for your eye makeup look
A flat angular brush is perfect for precision and layering. You can swap it for a wider brush if you are keen on blending it outwards to achieve a smokey eye effect.
Step 4: Dip and swirl
Dip and swirl the brush around the gel eye liner pot. Make sure both sides of the brush have product on. Take the excess off.
Step 5: Draw the line
Start in the middle of the lash line and draw a line towards the outer eye, finishing with a light flick resembling a cat eye. After that, draw a line from the inner eye towards the middle, completing the line. If you have hooded eyes, simply stretch the lid gently with your finger to draw the perfect line.
Step 6: Intensify the look
Build up colour intensity by adding a few more layers of the product. If you want to go for a smokey eye, take a slightly bigger brush and smudge, smudge, smudge!
Step 7: … And repeat
Repeat the process on the other eye to complete the look.
